Well trip went without a hitch to Marrakech travel wise. Started off nice and early, which was good because the flies were starting to become more than a nuissance the warmer it got. So with 180 plus miles to Marrakech we took the toll road to ensure we made good time. Unfortunately Dave woke with a very bad stomach, but managed to make it all the way to the campsite before being sick. Later that evening after phoning home I also felt bad all of a sudden, so went and got it out of my system, after which I was totally fine. This was luckly as I think that if I had slept on it I too would have been out for the count all the next day. So it turns out that Pesto doesn't keep ... read more

Yesterday was a bit of a bad day, not just for the possible storm, but also as we lost Mark and Alan from the group. On leaving the campsite they heard a knocking noise similiar to France, when they ran out of oil in the rear axle and wore out the bearing. So when we first pulled over, Mark added some oil and we headed back to Ouarzazate for more oil. All the way there the noise dissappeared, but when we then began heading for the first waypoint of an off road route, the noise came back. At this point the guys decided to split from Dave and I and make a slow trip up to Marrakech while we carried on to the route. The route started off on a bad tarmac road and shifted between ... read more

We left the campsite in search of supplies, in pouring rain. Which luckly didn't start till all the tents were packed away and all that was left to do was pay the man. We then headed back to Zagora as it seemed a fair sized town so might have a supermarket or marjane, though looking at the book these are only in the really big places like Fés or Tétouan. So we stopped at a small general store and picked up some more bottled water and fizzy drinks, plus a few extra items. One of these being chocolate mouse, which I had for Dessert tonight. While there a guy who owned a small tailors walked me down to his shop and fitted a dessert turban and top. After a bit of haggling I bought them and ... read more

Well after finally managing to tear ourselves away from the pool, we picked a route to Merzouga in Erg Chebbi via Afroud in the Saharra. I plugged the co-ordinates for the dessert stop another overlander, Mac had given us and it recognised the route we had looked at on the map so off we went. The route to Afroud was really good as the views were different again with the road dipping down and across a river bed, where the river had erroded the sides to look like a mini grand canyon. At the end of the road it joined a main road which was interesting as we saw our first dunes, and Afroud was nothing special, just another town that has a main road run through it. Just ouside of Merzouga the Sat nav didn't ... read more

In the morning, at first light I finally managed to get the bike out and go for a cycle. This was good and bad, good because it was a really nice time to be cycling as the roads were quiet and the valley looked amazing. But bad because I ahd forgotten about the altitude we had reached, plus the up hill was a killer, but once at the top the veiw was excellent, just like the high speed ride back down. The rest of the day made a slow start to the day as I tried to dry my washing, which had sat in the tub for a bit too long. So while Mark and Alan had a walk around the town and its shops I hung the washing out. This only partially dried it as ... read more

Well the days aim was to visit the Berber Village then head for Midelt. It all started bad when the weather decided to rain on and off when we first awoke, so the tents had to be packed away wet. Once packed up we headed off to find the village, only to reach it and be dissapointed. I think the reason the new lonely planet book on Morocco doesn't feature this place is because its no longer of interest to tourists, and is pretty run down with nothing really to see. So we carried on up the road to the top where there was a nice view point of the valley, in the rain. At this point we studied the maps and decided on a route that would take us to lake tislit. The route down ... read more

Well last night the worst thing happened, it rained! In a country that's mostly dessert you hope to evade such weather, though it was only for an hour in the night, then it was gone. In the morning we packed up and headed for the cedar forest south of Ifrane. The route down was quite easy, so we stopped at a nice, clean town called Imozzér-el-Kandar for supplies. So while Dave watched the trucks the rest of us took a wonder over to a kiosk to get some water. This kiosk was also a photocopy shop, and the guy in front of me had decided he needed to copy the entire edition of The Divinci code, or something of similiar size. But I did the british thing, I stood patiently for my turn in the queue, ... read more

Wow! I thought the last couple of days were fun but oh no, the best was still to come! After leaving the campsite above chefchouen, we planned a route striaght to Fés via a route named "death road". This is a road that was apperently incomplete, but for a bunch of burly off roaders, this seemed to good place to go and play. Once out of chefchouen and onto the "Death Road", it turned out to be a single track, tarmaced road that has a 2 foot strip of gravel either side, which is for diving out the way of the on coming traffic, and sods law dictates that they will appear on a blind corner, every time. The views are amazing as you can see for miles and it's all surrounded by mountains. Though this ... read more

This morning we sent mark and Alan in to Tetouen to experience the culture or more precisely the taxi ride. They came back amused and with car insurance by lunch time, so we set off for the the next site. On route we stopped for fuel, where i had to serve myself, but Dave had his filled for him, plus have his windows cleaned, he obviously looks like he's more loaded than i do :) . I lead us all to the next place using my Uncles Sat Nav, which did the job, even though half a mile from the campsite it sent us up a dirt track which looked like it was nothing more than a construction route, with a damn nigh verticle, 5 metre acsent to reach the tarmac again. Once settled in we ... read more

Last night we went out for dinner to try the local food. Not really sure about which one to choose, we went for the most popular, which was Cafe Nord. The seating is out on the grass facing the beach, and service is very relaxed. Dave and I put this down to us being too used to fast food places like Pizza hut, where if they take more than 35 minutes we start huffing. But the food was great and of course cheap, i think the bill for four drinks, two chips and two big pizzas came to less than £20 total. After that we wandered a bit further down the street, then crossed over and walked next to the beach back to the campsite. Unfortunately the campsite is out of season, as the swimming pool ... read more
