Sawatee kaaa everyone! I found out about this travel blog site, and think its a better way to get these letters out to everyone, plus i can add photos maps, etc. Hope you all enjoy it! Soo, here I am in lovely Chiang Mai, and i completed my first day of massage school today. I am feeling very happy here.. its an adorable small city, and I feel very at home here. I've met lots of interesting people here, as I thought I would once I started massage school. Its interesting, because when I was in the south, I saw almost no other Americans, but up here there are many, especially in massage school. I am staying at a little guest house called the Libra for 150 baht a night (3.75!). Every morning, the school sends ... read more

Finally... We arrived in Chiang Mai after a week of seeing anything and everything Bangkok has to offer. The 5am wake-up call to catch the flight has made some of us giddy with tiredness. However, we got set up in the beautiful and extremely peaceful setting of Crystal Springs Guest House where we will be staying for the better part of the next two weeks. The accommodations seem to be more than sufficient for our needs. We then proceeded to Payup University where we met with the President of the school. He was extremely appreciative of our willingness to help with the service-learning projects. For lunch, a dozen or so English majors from Payap showed us around campus, and helped us find lunch at their cafeteria. We also had an orientation that laid out the plans ... read more

Wow. Chiang Mai is beautiful. We woke up at the crack of dawn, and headed to the jungle. We rode elephants, for what seemed like hours. I was nauseous after about an hour, but was able to get some great photos of the locals. Lots of Hill Tribe people. They are all so amazingly nice. (I wish people in the US were peaceful like this.) Part of today's journey included visiting a snake farm, and a monkey farm. I fell in love with a baby monkey (you can check out the photos). After, we rode go-carts. (had to throw in a bit of home :) I could see myself retiring in Chiang Mai. The cost of living is so low. I could actually live really well with my state retirement (and this includes maids/cooks). Last night, ... read more

The trek back to Bangkok begins - luckily we had a few hours in Chiang Mai to get a break between modes of transportation. First, we took those trucks with seats in the back to the bus station in Chiang Rai, then hopped on a MUCH tamer bus back to Chiang Mai. No pukers this time - yeah!!!! :-) We had 4 hours in Chiang Mai to do whatever we wanted - and of course, I took that time to back up my digital photos on a disk and get a massage! I went to the same woman who massaged me earlier in the week. I tipped her very well, so she was VERY happy to see me. Other than at Wat Pho, her massage was definitely the best. Actually, I would say Wat Pho and ... read more

We've taken a public bus back to Chaing Mai where we were reunited with the rest of our luggage. :-) Ah, clean clothes! We've got a few hours before we board the over night train to Bangkok so I thought I'd drop a quick note before heading off on my own into town. Its tiring being with people contantly - I need some alone time. (the sign of a true introvert! - see and you were all fooled!) I'm weary of traveling from place to place and having to carry everything I need for a couple days at a time with me. It will be nice to get home and know I get to sleep in the same place for more than 2 nights in a row. However, if I hadn't been so sick before I ... read more

On Jan 2, we left Chiang Rai for Chiang Mai. With our small lesson on the day we went from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai (with a 4 hour wait), we bought bus tickets in advance and secured the 9:45 am bus. ChiangMai is the second biggest city in Thailand, after Bangkok. (The air is not as bad as I thought it would be.) Most backpackers stay inside the old city, surrounded by moats, or close to the Tha Phae Gate. During the New Years, there were a lot of travellers. Many Thais come to Chiang Mai to celebrate the new year. We were lucky to secure a guesthouse in advance. Although ChiangMai is the second biggest city, there is only one local bus that travels to several locations. All other transportation is served by the ... read more

OK, so, I am going to write my journals now according to the day I would have if I had internet access the past few days. That way things should be clearer as I write about them. So, New Years in Chiang Mai - started off pretty dull, planned to go to bed early after dinner so I could stay rested for our trek, but we got sidetracked while on the way back to the guesthouse by an alley of very happening bars. We went in to check it out and realized that there was a Thai boxing arena in the middle and a transgender show. Both being quite new to us, we had to check it out. Although we kept quite tame, we watched a very choreographed Thai boxing match while at the same time ... read more

Okay...since last writing, I've been in Chaing mai. Took a nice long, hot shower - yeah!!! Put on the clean clothes that I bought and met the group at the trekking store where we rented sleeping bags, mats, etc. for the hike. I'm renting a porter too to carry my bags. Is renting the right word? Anyway...then we headed to the night market which was a teaming mass of people. Did some shopping for a few gifts, had fresh pad thai and wandered. Athena did all my negotiating for me so I was able to spend a little and get a lot. If my phrasiology is weird - blame the australians. We're starting to pick up things from each other... :-) We went back to the guest house and had a beer. Athena and Rachel ate ... read more

Happy New Year all - just in case I don't find a computer tomorrow -- actually it is only the 30th for you, but almost the New Year for us, only 12 more hours until 2006! I also have one note just to let you know why I haven't been uploading photos - I have tried the past couple times, and it either doesn't work, or it takes over 5 minutes to upload each photo - most times I don't have that much time to be on the computer because we have to meet the group to head off on another tour - sorry about that. I promise though, that soon after I get back I will post all photos as a slide show for you all to see. So, where did I leave off last ... read more

Yesterday, after I wrote, we went back to the guest house and I took a much needed shower and a nap. Then I had the BEST croissant with salami and cheddar cheese and french fries for dinner. Yum!!! I needed that! Finished book number one and hung out at the guest house until it was time to board the overnight train. We gathered everything up, got on the train where they has these little berths for each of us. It was luxurious almost - pillows and everything. And they brought us a Singha beer as soon as the train started. We went to sleep pretty early and slept most of the way to Chaing Mai. THis trip has made me really grateful for flush toilets, hot water and US sanitation standards. I'll never baulk at using ... read more
