This morning we are woken by lots of noise, it's a brass band playing 'The Final Countdown'. Thanks to one too many mohito's last night it's not the kind of thing you want to wake up to. Today is the annual Flower Festival parade. Schools, local communities and just about everyone in Chiang Mai is involved in some way or the other. Beautifully decorated floats glide around the moat and up and down the main streets of Chiang Mai. There are also marching bands, unidentified groups of people (if only I could read Thai), lots of school children and an elephant. We spend the morning taking photos and video and trying to avoid being mown down by stray tourists. Chiang Mai is packed to the rafters today and the usual Sunday market has been going strong ... read more

We arrive back in Chiang Mai after a lovely delay at Bangkok Airport. Some wonderful tourists (Birgit's Mates!) hold up our plane by 30 minutes. After spending the better part of 11 hours on a plane with no air conditioning and a stag party as company we really didn't need this. I spend most of the journey asleep and awake grouchy and stiff. As usual the seatbelts are off and every one is up before the plane comes to a stop. The couple that cause the hold up seem to be quite desperate to get off the plane, I'm in their way. This really isn't a good thing. After shoving me sideways to get past, I block the husband, drag my luggage from the over head compartment and lamp the bitch in the face with a ... read more

Saa er mutti hjemme i Chiang Mai. What a fantastic experience.

Well, sort of. I think I burned the tofu a bit, but overall it came out ok. My red curry though was quite good. What am I talking about? I went to a cooking class yesterday in Chiang Mai with Thai Farm Cooking and whipped up a few dishes like red curry, pad thai, chicken with cashews, mangos with sticky rice, and papaya salad. I ate all of it, and I'm not sick yet. That's a positive in my book. Actually, I think everything I made tasted pretty good. We also didn't use MSG (MSG seems to be added to most food these days to add flavor; the negative side-effects are debated). Now, the thing with these cooking classes is that they provide all the ingredients and take care of other prep (like slicing up the ... read more

Greetings from Chiang Mai (CM). This is one of the many cultural 'highlights' prevalent in Thailand. This was one part of the holiday that Linda was especially looking forward to, whilst Ken was a bit on the reticent side imagining an olde worlde temple strewn place with not a lot to do. It must be said that Ken has been more than pleasantly surprised - but more of that later. Our last few days in Ko Samui were just as good as the previous few weeks. Our trip to Chaweng turned out to be the lowlight of our Thai experience. We had only been in the place ten minutes and we wanted to return to Bann Rak. Tacky is not the word. A rain shower meant us having to seek shelter; luckily there was a pub ... read more

Have you ever had a hot shower that’s better than…well, you know? My shower water was so hot last night that it almost burned my scalp…but I stayed under it for as long as I possibly could! It was that good, and it took almost that long to get the dirt outta my hair, ears, off my black feet…ahh! I have spent most of the last 5 days in the jungle and now I’m back to civilization. Chiang Mai is probably the 2nd biggest city in Thailand. It is the capital of the North, and is much more mellow than Bangkok. The weather is always cooler than the south, and the people here are very proud of their city. When I first got here I was a little disappointed…it just seemed like another busy city…but Chiang ... read more

It's Monday evening, January 30 and time to get you up to date... My last blog entry left off with me leaving Bangkok on a sleeper train bound for Chiang Mai (city north of Bangkok - 13 hour train ride). What's it like on an overnight train ride? First off, let me give you the logistics. To my knowledge, there are 3 classes of seats on Thailand trains. My train car was a 2nd class sleeper with A/C. The car included pairs of padded seats facing each other that convert into two fold-down berths, one over the other. The lower bed had more headroom and the window. The upper bed was pretty small and tight with no view out the window. Unfortunately for me, I had an upper berth. Doh! The cost was 691 baht (about ... read more

Hey all, hope u like all of the pics which ive added, got lots more but it takes so long to upload them (excuses, excuses!). Ok, so since my last update, i have (by some miracle) managed to do a 3 day 2 night trek in Pai. I have never been so knackered in all of my life, i knew it would be trying, but seriously, it was exhausting. The walk was the hardest part, several hrs a day of just going up and down extremely steep hills....ok i'll admit it i'm just so unfit! It was hilarious, there were about 12 in our trekking group and me, nikki and danielle were always at the back...even 2 smokers (they were german too!!) were in front of us. Anyway, with the exception of the walking, it was ... read more

CHIANG MAI Chiang Mai is the second largest town in Thailand, but has a completely different feel than Bangkok. The climate seems to be much more temperate due to its northern location. You can actually wear jeans and not sweat your *#$%^ off. The town has a slower pace then the bustling capitol and makes a distinct effort to cater to the western crowd. You can see why the place is filled with Expats. Trek After one day of exploring the city I was off on a 3 day 2 night trek. Around 10 am myself and the crew of 6 other trekkers piled into a Songathew (think pickup truck with two benches and a metal cover), and drove north for a few hours. I was fortunate to be matched with a great group of people: ... read more
