Day 3 of our Chai Nat adventure continued. When I woke up this morning I slowly rolled over to grab my phone to see how much time I had left before the 5am Music Fest. I almost couldn’t believe it when I saw it was 530. A break at last, turns out yesterday was either a 1 day event or I just so happened to get here on day 99 of the 100 days of mourning. We started the day by greeting the monks on the street with some fresh rice and ramen. After we put the food in the pot they were carrying, we bowed down and they blessed us, which I figure can’t hurt when you are in a new city. Our first stop today was to a pre-school. Now let me tell you, ... read more

I woke up today, at 5 am, to the sound of BLASTING Thai music. As if the music itself wasn't abrasive enough, after about 3 minutes the local animals started calling back, which created quite the Thai Symphony. I, like any rational human being, was pretty surprised by this and was walking around trying to figure out what was going on. No one else seemed bothered by it, and every time I'd ask a student what it was, they'd just shrug. I later found out that it's common practice to play music from 5-6am for 100 days after someone dies as a period of mourning. Looking forward to the next week of this.... We eventually got up, dressed and headed back to the pavilion for breakfast. Afterwards we caught a tractor to the Lao Khrang Village, ... read more

So today we embark on an epic adventure to try to teach 15 students the true meaning of Thai culture. Who better to lead them on said adventure than yours truly (along with 2 other Thai teachers). I've been given very little information before we began. I had an itinerary that had been translated for me and a note that said to be at the school by 9am on Saturday morning. I motorbiked in right at 9 to find half of my group already assembled. We waited for a few stragglers to catch up, but we eventually took off 5 students short of our roster. I started to ask questions, but then I remembered I was in Thailand and figured I'd be better served to sit back and just let it all unfold. As it turns ... read more

It doesn't seem like I've only been here a week, but I have, it's crazy! With our last few hours in Bangkok we visited a restaurant called Cabbages & Condoms, it took ages to get to it including crossing a motoway which involved me scrageing my leg! But it was worth it because the setting was lovely and the food wasn't too bad either. All of the decorations were made out of colouful condoms, so they had flowers etc and it was quite cool to see what they had concocted. Forgot to say that the taxi's in Bangkok are hot pink which is pretty cool! Were at the Ecohouse now and we will be here for the next week as well. They took us to the wrong house first of all but luckily our house is ... read more

Had a quiet few days really at the end of this week. On Thursday we just went for a three hour bike ride around the local area. It was really nice actually to get out and about and not be in the bus. It is very relaxing and it is all very flat around here so it wasn that difficult. We rode along one side of the river and then back along the other, and it wasn too sunny so we only melted a bit. In the afternoon we just relaxed back at the house and then to the bar at night. On Friday we went to the local zoo and a hundred year old market. The zoo was okay but the animals were all in pretty small cages, not really what you want to see. ... read more

This week so far it has all been about Buddhism and temples. We learnt a lot about it last week but we saw a lot more of it in practice this week, spending quite a lot of time with monks and in temples, mediatating and chanting with them. The weekend was a relaxed one, went to the pool and just chilled at the house, but then on Monday some of us got up at 5:30am to go the local temple and feed the monks. It was 'Holy Monk day', a special day where the local people take the food to the monks as opposed to the monks walking around the town to collect the food as they usually do. Monks are not allowed to cook for themselves, they have to live on food which is given ... read more

Wednesday started with a Thai language lesson which was a good laugh. We all got the basics I think although most people do talk basic English here so you can get by, but saying hello to the locals always goes down well. We then went out at about 11am to the 'Heroes' monument which is a statue to remember all of the Thais who fell in the war against the Burmese back in the late 1700's, the war in which Thialand won their independence. After this we went to a Temple which had statues illustrating the story of Singburi, the town we are staying near. Singburi translates as the 'Lion city' or 'City of the Lion' and is named after a story of a lion who was killed by his son, but then the son repented ... read more

The last couple of days have been so busy!! On Sunday afternoon we arrived at the house in Singburi where we are staying for the next 3 weeks. It is about 3 hours north of Bangkok and it is lovely but very basic. There are four of us sharing a little room which has no storage but ot does have an en-suite bathroom. The water here for showers is cold but in this heat they are amazing!! It is so humid and sticky and it is so noce to have a cold shower when you get back from a day out in the sun. Yesterday, Monday, we just went for a walk to the local market to get our barings a bit and then in the afternoon we went to a little craft centre to make ... read more

Bangkok Before heading off on our weeks voluntary placement we had a few days in Bangkok. On the Saturday we headed off to the floating markets. Shops lined the banks of the canal along with numerous floating markets. Floating along with vendors grabbing hold of your boats to sell you there produce was great fun. There was a real buzz to the place. As with everything else in South East Asia there appeared to be no rules on the river resulting in some entertaining situations with boats. I thought that I had been quite adventurous with my food out here and had sampled a lot of the Thai cuisine. However, after seeing the produce a number of the vendors had on sale I was sadly mistaken. The smells were incredible and I could have stayed ... read more

So last friday (27.03.09) we went to monkey city, aka Lop Buri, which is pretty much as the title suggests, lots of monkeys which just live in the city. They can be pretty cheeky, you have to hide your stuff or they will try and nik it. Last weekend we did a trip away, on the saturday went to Erawan national park to some waterfalls then out in some random town we were staying in, don't even know the name of the place! On the sunday (29.03.09) went to see the bridge over the River Kwai, pretty horrific what happened there. We got to walk on it and get a train over it, apparently the allied POWs made it as unsafe as possible in the hope it would collapse. Two of the group managed to miss ... read more
