"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." - Mark Twain

So we are off. The final phase of my year off begins. Seven weeks, three countries and a life time of memories await! Although, I am usually useless at these sorts of things, I am going to endeavour to keep a blog of all mine and Fenellas adventures around South East Asia.

Hopefully it will allow you to keep up to date with all that we manage to see and do, and for Mum and Dad's sake to check that I am still alive!

See you when I get back!

Lots of Love

Bangkok Before heading off on our weeks voluntary placement we had a few days in Bangkok. On the Saturday we headed off to the floating markets. Shops lined the banks of the canal along with numerous floating markets. Floating along with vendors grabbing hold of your boats to sell you there produce was great fun. There was a real buzz to the place. As with everything else in South East Asia there appeared to be no rules on the river resulting in some entertaining situations with boats. I thought that I had been quite adventurous with my food out here and had sampled a lot of the Thai cuisine. However, after seeing the produce a number of the vendors had on sale I was sadly mistaken. The smells were incredible and I could have stayed ... read more

For the last week we have been based in Krabi province on the Andaman coast, in the South of Thailand. Sun, sea and sand have been the main theme of the week with lots of relaxation. A welcome break after 5 weeks on the road. Railay Our first point of call was Railay Island. Getting there was the usual facade. Little long tail boat, rough waters and once again a wet bum! However the boat journey was worth every ounce of water as Railay is my idea of heaven and I immediately fell in love with the place. Gorgeous beaches, stunning limestone cliffs and a jungle clad interior which was as far as I am concerned an adventure playground waiting to be explored. The backpacker scene and accommodation wasn't bad either, although maybe a bit on ... read more

Home stay On Wednesday we embarked upon a Cambodian home stay, the one missing from our set and as it turns out, the best yet!! We left Kampot on Wednesday lunchtime by shared taxi. This is the cheapest mode of travel out here but not necessarily the most comfortable. About 16 of us were crammed in a local minibus made to seat about 10. I was squeezed in next to the door, with half my bum perched on about 3 inches of seat - I wouldn't recommend it. The home stay was in a village called Daem Po, roughly half way between Kampot and Phnom Penh. The taxi dropped us off at the nearest local market where our host was due to meet us. It was clear that the area generally receives very few westerners, ... read more

On Friday night we took another sleeper bus this time from Siem Reap down to Sihanoukville on the south coast of Cambodia. The journey was marginally better than the last sleeper bus we went on as this time there was no snoring man or uneven mattresses. It still isn't however my favorite mode of travel. We arrived into Sihanouk ville at about 6.30am and were welcomed with a heard of Tuk Tuk drivers who insisted on harassing you until you let them take you to the ‘best’ guest house in town. Not what you want when you have had very little sleep - let’s just say I was less than amused. Finally, we let one of them take us down to the beach and to one of the guest houses nearby. Sihanoukville was unfortunately my idea ... read more

Crossing the Laos Cambodian Border In the lonely planet it suggests that this can be quite tricky and advises you go with a tour operator to your chosen destination in Cambodia. What it does not say is that it is still tricky even if you go have a tour guide. We had arranged to leave DoneDet island in Laos at 8am. 8am was a mere formality and what they really meant was you can leave whenever you nag us enough to leave. So at 9am after an hour of waiting a guy lethargically decided to get out his boat and take us back to the main land. The relaxed attitude to our day on the road was a sign of things to come. Once on the main land we border a minibus, that after about ... read more

An Uncomfortable Nights Sleep On Friday night we look the sleeper bus from Vientiane to Pakse. The bus was a bit like a coach, with a number of bunk beds along the sides. Instead of having two people to a bunk though, they had four. A bit of a squish. We were on the back seats so technically had more room. That was until they moved one guy to the back as another man refused to share his bunk. Unfortunately, the mattress across the back weren't even and I was forced to sleep in between the cracks, not comfy. To top it off the guy next to us had to be the world’s loudest snorer. Dad he made you look juvenile. So not the best nights sleep in the world but it was an efficient ... read more

Vang Vieng The last few days were spent in Vang Vieng. An 18 year olds Gap Year haven. A big drinking scene, with a street littered with bars and restaurants bizarrely showing repeats of Friends episodes all day long. Apart from the friends episodes it probably wasn't really our scene and we definitely felt a bit old and boring. Nevertheless by skirting off the beaten track and getting away from the town we managed to get up to a few exciting things. On our first day there we went on bike trip around the surrounding area. Working our way through the local villages and through the rice paddies with limestone cliffs surrounding us was fabulous. There wasn't another tourist in sight!!! By getting off the beaten track we have so far had some of our ... read more

Saturday was our first day in Luang Prabang. With no real plans we decided to take a walk around the town and see what we could see. The place is absolutely stunning and I would recommend it to anyone! As we were walking down the street we got accosted by a tuk tuk driver- funny how that always seems to happen. For once however we actually decided to take him up on his offer, this turned out to be a good decision. He took us to one of the local waterfalls Kuang Si. By far the most incredible waterfall I have ever seen. A geographers heaven!!! Driving to the waterfall was equally spectacular with lush rice paddies surrounding us. In the evening we decided to climb up to the highest point in Luang Prabang, Pui Si. ... read more

Before I get into all the exciting things we have been up to for the last few days I should let you all know that I have finally found out that I am going to be working in Edinburgh for the next six months!!! So if you know anyone who needs a housemate let me know! Pai to Luang Prabang We are now into our second country of our trip, Laos. From what we have seen so far Laos appears to be an amazingly beautiful country. We left Pai on Wednesday evening and headed for Chang Kong on the Thailand/Laos border. Our 6hour bus ride through the mountains of northern Thailand was a bit of a hairy experience. Driving through Northern Thailand is a bit like driving to a ski resort in the Alps. Chiang Mai For the last few days we have been based in Northern Thailand. First in Chiang Mai and now in the Mae Hon Song Province. Our time in Chiang Mai was incredible and both of us fell in love with the place. Our first full day there was spent doing a Thai cooking course. After a visit to the local food market we learnt how to make curry paste, curry, noodle dishes and spring roles. It was great to learn more about the local cuisine and even better to taste it. We were given a recipe book so I am afraid you will all be guinea pigs when we get back. After our cooking course we went to one of the local temples for ‘monk chat’. The scheme is a way for the monks to ... read more
