1895, military defeat forced China to cede Taiwan to Japan. Taiwan reverted to Chinese control after World War II. Following the Communist victory on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government using the 1946 constitution drawn up for all of China. Over the next five decades, the ruling authorities gradually democratized and incorporated the native population within the governing structure. In 2000, Taiwan underwent its first peaceful transfer of power from the Nationalist to the Democratic Progressive Party. Throughout this period, the island prospered and became one of East Asia's economic "Tigers." The dominant political issues continue to be the relationship between Taiwan and China - specifically the question of eventual unification - as well as domestic political and economic reform. Right, today is going to be different. I've had about four hours sleep (the lag is really playing havoc with my body clock) but I wake up full of positivity. I fire a quick email off to Martin asking for some help on getting a phone and then head out. Today I'm going to visit Taipei 101 which at the time of writing is officially the tallest building in the world at 509 metres in height. I've only ever seen it on TV at New Year when they go round world famous landmarks showing the fireworks. The MRT is a doddle. [View Full Entry]

The masterplan begins. Asia » Taiwan » Taipei
Wahey, my first day in Taipei. I wake up at 11:30 having slept a near solid 12 hours. Time to start work on the masterplan. First things first I need a sim card. I head out into the baking midday sun stopping to grab a rice triangle at the 7/11. They had these things in Korea. They come wrapped in seaweed that always comes off in the wrapping so you can't eat it. They're an extremely average snack but my mandarin is non-existent and I've got stuff to do. Both the Rough Guide and the Lonely planet tell me I can [View Full Entry]

Not the Grand Hotel

So I land in Taipei at around 19:30 delighted to finally be here and to be done with travelling. It's taken about 16 hours to get from London to here which I guess isn't too bad. Can i just make two points about the journey. Both Heathrow T5 and BA have had a bad press over the last year or so but I thought they were great. T5 is an outstanding piece of architecture, so much better than the other hellhole terminals. My bags connected fine at Hong Kong (as did I) and i felt that the £25 charge from BA [View Full Entry]

Martin's place

Hello/AOA to all! We have just arrived in the Taipei airport after our 13 1/2 hour flight! The flight was not that bad. I was able to sleep for about 8 hours and Tayyaba slept a little less. The food we had on the flight was chinese noodles for a snack and then for breakfast we shared scrambled eggs and some chinese type of porridge that had carrots, peas, and chicken it it. The plane was huge and we are glad we have the longest leg of our trip behind us! We have one hour until our plane leaves from here [View Full Entry]

My First Typhoon Asia » Taiwan
Typhoon Morakot leaves 6 dead or missing in Taiwan By DEBBY WU - Associated Press Writer TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A typhoon slammed into Taiwan overnight, leaving at least six people dead or missing and more than a dozen injured, officials and media reported Saturday. Typhoon Morakot made landfall in the eastern Hualien county late Friday night, the Central Weather Bureau said. It is expected to weaken to a tropical storm before it hits southern China late Saturday or early Sunday. Happy Vacation? Asia » Taiwan » Kenting
(Written Tuesday, August 4th, 2009) These last few days have been the worst days out of my entire trip in Taiwan. It’s just my luck that they should have been the best too; after all, I am on a trip to Kenting (a very pretty beach town) with Theresa and all her friends, but I think Saturday night has had lasting effects until now. Because I stayed up so late Saturday night, I slept a lot Sunday and couldn’t sleep Sunday night. Then by the time Monday rolled around, I was exhausted, and when I’m tired my stress levels triple. On [View Full Entry]

(Written Wednesday, August 5th, 2009) Wednesday morning I hit an all time low. I was feeling extremely homesick. Since I don't speak Chinese, I felt really left out. Even though I am the foreigner and I realize I should know Chinese, I also felt like Theresa wasn't being a good friend by not including Kennon and me. Plus, I am used to making decisions, so when I had absolutely no say in where we ate for breakfast, where we went after breakfast, or what water activities we bought, I was nearly brought to tears. I am used to being in control, [View Full Entry]

Typhoon 101 @ Taipei 101 Asia » Taiwan » Taipei
We arrived in Taipei midmorning of August 6th. A good 45 minute ride from the airport, we soon found our Leofoo Hotel in the city center. We were a group of 4 traveling from Manila, each one smarting from the superb deal we bagged from Philippine Airlines which put out a two-day promo fare of only P3,900 (about US$80) inclusive of the travel tax of P1,620. The planned 4 day/3 night holiday listed a few must-visit sites, no-mercy eating and some night market shopping for good measure. Soon after we found our hotel, we wasted no time and took a cab [View Full Entry]

Too Much, Too Much Asia » Taiwan » Taipei
Wow; there is so much to tell about these last four days that I don't even know where to start. I want to talk about my awesome experiences, my incredible frustrations, and the overall culture of Taiwan. Hopefully I will have time to write it all down, but if not, maybe I can finish it tomorrow. Quick Rundown: 1) The day after we went surfing we took it really easy because I injured the inside of my legs and it hurt to walk. Theresa works at a small sandwich shop next to the Sun-Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, so we sat in the [View Full Entry]
