Background: In 1895, military defeat forced China to cede Taiwan to Japan. Taiwan reverted to Chinese control after World War II. Following the Communist victory on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government using the 1946 constitution drawn up for all of China. Over the next five decades, the ruling authorities gradually democratized and incorporated the native population within the governing structure. In 2000, Taiwan underwent its first peaceful transfer of power from the Nationalist to the Democratic Progressive Party. Throughout this period, the island prospered and became one of East Asia's economic "Tigers." The dominant political issues continue to be the relationship between Taiwan and China - specifically the question of eventual unification - as well as domestic political and economic reform.

April 3 So today I headed out to hit a few beaches. First up was Fulobg beach. It want a great beach and it had a decent lil wave. There was a river mouth splitting the beach so the waves had some form to it and the wind was off shore. The water felt around 60ish though. I walked around here a bit then hopped back on the train and headed to Dasi beach. This was a tiny town not much there. The surf spot was about 1/2 k down the road in a lil cove area called honeymoon beach. The [View Full Entry]

Last weekend we traveled with Westen’s hockey team to Taipei, Taiwan for three games with the local teams and lots of sightseeing. We were very fortunate to have four Taiwanese families on our team who really showed us the city. They made sure we made the most of our days there, squeezing in great food, Taipei 101, great food, the National Palace Museum, more great food, and, of course, hockey. In case you couldn’t guess, we never got hungry the whole time we were there! As we flew in we were thrilled to see mountains, forests and water. The city is [View Full Entry]

March 20, 11:24PM: We finally made it! To the airport that is. Thanks to my sister and Phil, Adam and I got to SFO at 10:00PM (You two rock!). With three hours to kill, we wondered around the domestic & international terminals and read our books. Cassie is currently reading Living Dead in Dallas; Adam is currently reading One Square Mile of Hell. It’s currently 1:24PM Bangkok time. We must stay awake for 9 more hours to stick to our new time zone for the next two weeks! Can we do it? I don’t think so….zzzzzzzzzzzzz. We miss Abby and Coco [View Full Entry]

India via Taiwan Asia » Taiwan » Taipei
I had planned to write my first entry for this trip in Taiwan but I was unable to get connected to the airport's WIFI network. And while writing in India would have been a simple process, I've instead been busying myself with showing my friends around and enjoying the great social atmosphere. Leaving Mt. Isa was a breeze and the flight down to Brisbane was smooth and comfortable. The cloud formations over Mt Isa were spectacular and continued for about half an hour into the flight. As seen from above the clouds could easily have been mistaken for fresh snowy slopes. [View Full Entry]

So I havent been adding to this at all - whoops. Thought I would give it a try as I still have 20 mins of battery life left on the laptop Sean bought (Can you even believe he bought something?! Its so weird and fantastic all at the same time). A random thing happened when we picked up the laptop though, a bunch of people dressed up as Chinese dragons and a guy in a mask (I cant think of the word for it...) but Ill just say priest...but not a normal priest. They came into the store parading around giving [View Full Entry]

First Day Out Asia » Taiwan » Taipei
After being sick for a few days me and Sean were finally able to go out and explore a little bit. We walked out to the danshui (?) river passing by streets that looked completely different from anything near the hostel we are staying in. Hoping to rent some bikes there we found out you either needed a passport or $2000NT per bike,...so needless to say we will return another day with our passports :) We started to head back to the hostel and found a really nice park in the middle of what seem to be highways. What I really [View Full Entry]
