Background: In 1895, military defeat forced China to cede Taiwan to Japan. Taiwan reverted to Chinese control after World War II. Following the Communist victory on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government using the 1946 constitution drawn up for all of China. Over the next five decades, the ruling authorities gradually democratized and incorporated the native population within the governing structure. In 2000, Taiwan underwent its first peaceful transfer of power from the Nationalist to the Democratic Progressive Party. Throughout this period, the island prospered and became one of East Asia's economic "Tigers." The dominant political issues continue to be the relationship between Taiwan and China - specifically the question of eventual unification - as well as domestic political and economic reform.

First Day Out Asia » Taiwan » Taipei
After being sick for a few days me and Sean were finally able to go out and explore a little bit. We walked out to the danshui (?) river passing by streets that looked completely different from anything near the hostel we are staying in. Hoping to rent some bikes there we found out you either needed a passport or $2000NT per bike,...so needless to say we will return another day with our passports :) We started to head back to the hostel and found a really nice park in the middle of what seem to be highways. What I really [View Full Entry]

Back in Hong Kong, we took a short break before we began looking for where to head next. After a full day of shopping at the three floors of travel agencies in Mong Kok and several hours looking online we booked flights to Malaysia and Taipei and decided to stay in Hong Kong for Chinese New Years. We arrived in Taipei on a dreary day that threatened to rain but we were treated with sights almost immediately. I think the first thing we did was scan the surroundings to try and point out differences from the other places we have been [View Full Entry]

As the famous Whitesnake song slithers thru my head (get it...whiteSNAKE..slithers...get it..get it) I sit here typing in a hostel in Taipei Taiwan. Thus far I have been in either America or Americanized Japan with assorted friends. I was so nervous climbing onto the plane in Okinawa. Its always a strange feeling going to a country where not one person knows who you are. Its lonely and invigorating and a challenge. The only person I have to depend on is myself. I always make it thru the loneliness but its still a part of my trips. Actually let me go back [View Full Entry]

The scene

For our Christmas vacation this year we decided to check out Taiwan. We had 5 days so we needed to cram in as much as we possibly could. We started off in Taipei where we spent the first day parusing through temples as well as paying a visit to Taipei 101. There is a bit of controversy surrounding it's rank among the highest buildings in the world, but accoring to our Lonely Planet guide, it is the tallest. It also claims to have the worlds fastest elevator that rises 1010m per minute as well as a massive damper that counteracts movements [View Full Entry]

Thats right, back in Taipei, was almost tempted to splurge on those infamous $2 sodas again. But I held fast, after all, its free on the plane. The plane ride was a bit much on the legs, had to be creative with the stretching, definately not made for the vertical elite. LOL. Lang slept good chunks, I drifted in and out, but mostly was awake, I did get to see a lot of movies tho. We attracted attention, every where we went we got stares from people. I guess its not usual to see a Hispanic and Asian chatting it up. [View Full Entry]

A Pot of Green Tea with your Campfire? Add to the list of things I love about Taiwan: you can camp and even swim in the middle of December. Though I would like to point out that the only two people who jumped in the freezing river water were the Canadians in the group. I would also like to point out, just for comparison's sake, that on the same weekend it was 50 degrees colder in my hometown in Canada. Our camping venue was Pinglin, a small town in the middle of one of the most famous tea producing regions of [View Full Entry]

Contrast and travel tiredness in Taiwan How fed up can one be with noodles, rice and sweet bread; that’s what we are contemplating these days. Travel tiredness comes and goes in waves, it doesn’t seem that much related to the country we are in, it is just part of having all the freedom you ever longed for and then being tired of playing the tourist every day. Taiwan is not yet a very popular tourist destination, yet that might change. The Portuguese used to call this island Ilha Formosa, ‘beautiful island’, and that’s what it is. The first and for [View Full Entry]
