and I am now heading off to see my friends---god help me as i venture on the train by myself-most know I had a hard enough time in Germany with someone with me, now by myself--yikes!! Ok well I just finished my last class of the day and it went ok. I say ok because I am not for sure if my students really understand the words that are coming out of my mouth, but I can see that they react well to gestural movements and love to do memory and repetition games--total plus! The kids enjoyed the pig noises I made as i explained to them that Iowa, the state I am from, has a lot of pigs---they even put their finger on their nose and scrunched it up flat like a pig---we had some ... read more

When I first arrived to Taiwan over two weeks ago I kept asking myself why I just didn't stay home and teach in a small town in Iowa. I would have been in my own comfort zone, culture zone, and with my own close group of friends. The culture is so much different here in Taiwan than the U.S. and Germany for that matter. I never had this big of culture shock when I lived in Germany maybe because I lived and taught on an U.S. army base. The first few days passed and I began to hang out with a group of people, some from Canada, England, and the States all so funny and special in their own ways. We had some good times, at the Aboriginies festival and Son's and William's, even the local ... read more

There are some people in life, who just seem to be prepared - you know, for any and every situation…they are never at a loss for words, and they certainly always have something fitting to say when an awkward silence ensues. This is exactly the type of person I WISH I could be… a revelation that came to me the other night when tutoring my 14 year old private, Terry. Terry is a really smart kid, who is extremely shy - it’s taken months for me to get him to really chat with me. Up until now, the best I could do was get him to read an English text…and the other half of the lesson was me acting like a circus animal, desperately trying to get a rise outta him. Tough crowd. The other week, ... read more

It might seem a little overdone, but here in Taiwan there seems to be a celebration for everything - especially in terms of school. The first graduation ceremony a child will ever attend is that from kindergarten. This is what I had been preparing for, for MY class, since April. Basically, a coworker and I had to write, produce and direct a play for my kids to perform for their parents on the big day. What we had decided on was a rendition of “Pinocchio” - hoping that the story would be familiar enough to those parents who can’t speak English. A lot of my kids are the first generation of English speakers in their families, so it was important to take that into account. This was the beginning of a slight nightmare…. Well, I shouldn’t ... read more

The wife and I hopped on a flight from Taipei to Kaoshiung on impulse, and because it was so cheap (she being a flight attendant). When got out of the taxi at Sungshan domestic airport here in Taipei, there was a plane leaving in 15 minutes. It was a clear day and I had a window seat overlooking the Taiwan's Central Mountain Range. It was close to 100 degrees outside, a the blue skies seemed to be frying the clouds into cotton balls of white phosphorous in the sky. Rivers and puffs of clouds glided through the massive valleys of mountain peaks, which seemed to rip up the atmosphere with their jagged summits. 40 minutes later we began out descent, entering a yellow smog zone of napalm scooter and factory exhaust. Three distinct layers of atmosphere ... read more

So after unknowingly using face-wash as body lotion for the past 2 weeks I have concluded that my deductive reasoning skills may not be as sharp as I once thought they were…either that or four months of being in Taiwan hasn’t made my Chinese any better… The past month has been hectic as the Dragon Boat races are coming up soon. These days we’re practicing about 5 times a week and have started to use the actual boat we will be competing in, on the Love River. The river practices have been much better in many ways since it’s nice NOT to be sitting by the side of a swimming pool rowing water and never getting anywhere…however, the course on the river is a lot longer than I had expected. My arms and back are starting ... read more

They say that on average, it takes a person 21 times of repeating a new behaviour to shed a bad habit. Apparently nose-picking in children wasn’t being tested in this study…. Teaching - still something I am learning about, and loving more and more as each week passes…although… if one more kid sneezes in my face I think I might snap! Unleashing ones ‘natural’ bodily functions / noises anywhere, anytime is common practice here, so there are a lot of those ‘functions’ that happening all the time (aren’t you glad I’m telling you this?!). It’s something to get used to… One great policy they enforce at many schools is that anyone who is sick has to wear a hospital mask when at school...sure it may look a little Silence-of-the-Lambs-ish, but without it, we would all have ... read more

The top 5 reasons living in Kaohsiung is key: 5. Telemarketers hang up on ME when I answer the phone 4. There are food stands open pretty much 24H 3. Every day is 25 degrees or over (this time of year) 2. The beach is only 2 hrs away 1. Telemarketers hang up on me when I answer the phone Lately, life has been great - and getting better. I have joined a gym - “Muscle Asia”, which is only about a 3 minute scooter ride from my apartment. Oddly enough, working out in a Chinese aerobics class is not as bad as it may seem…the instructors sporadically mix English words into their routine (actually, there is one guy who makes an effort to make the entire class bi-lingual when he sees me there!), and usually ... read more

Wow!!!! I think we are a tad behind on the blogs, but the trip continues to be great with wonderful surprises around the corners. We arrived in Kaoshiung, Taiwan where Rob (my brother) and Rita (my sister-in-law) live. The trip was awesome! We were able to see the school (see below), eat great food, climb monkey mountain (one of rob's favorites), and really explore the mountains and cities/ villages of taiwan. It was also a special trip for everyone, as rob, rita, surya and I were able to spend great quality time together- a commodity with us living in boston and them in taiwan. Over a year ago Rob and Rita opened a buxiban school- an after-school school that many taiwainese children goto daily to learn different subjects. "Robert's American School" is an english buxiban (pronouned ... read more

Things are all starting to come together for me out here in Kaohsiung. Lately I have just been relaxing and continuing to adjust until my contract starts at Junior Jungle tomorrow, March 10th. I am very anxious to start teaching regularly - and am really glad that I have had the chance to meet my students on many occasions leading up to this point. It has really helped me to be excited about starting (and less nervous) because all my kids already know my name and are familiar with me. Anyway, I thought I would post some pictures of my apartment so you can see how I am living. Faye was right - it really is a palace (esp. compared to some places I have visited!). The building is quite new, and the whole complex is ... read more
