KAOHSIUNG It was good to say goodbye to Taipei and was even better to say Hello to Kaohsiung, our new home. Within the first day, we were already renting a place. It is in a complex with a swimming pool at the foot of our building. In our same building, we have a billiards room, ping pong room, fitness gym and a basketball court outside. Soon after arriving, we met Paul, one of our closest buds. Through him, we were invited to a huge BBQ party in a penthouse rented by 3 other Canadians. We climbed up a ladder on top of the roof to the tallest point in almost all of Kaohsiung. It was unbelievable as you could enjoy a 360 degree view of the city, mountains and lake while listening to people play the ... read more

Check out the sights and sounds of Kaoshiung...i was impressed with the service of the locals...yep..it is indeed a change from prc and hong kong..the cabbies and sales staff..are pretty courteous..and of course it helps that we can speak mandarin and hokkien to them..Er...it's called "tai ge" or in simple hokkien..means "Taiwanese language"...needless to say, it brings back memories for my bro as he was last in taiwan for his army training...hmmm...let's just say...eons eons ago...and he was really speaking the language well! Let's the pix speaks for themselves. It's immersion time for my nephews and niece who don't speak in mandarin or hokkien much! ... read more

It's been over a year since we left Taiwan and I wanted to do a photo reflection on our 7 plus months there. First we landed in Taipei and spent about a week. Taipei is pretty cool city and I think would seem much cooler after getting some understanding of the culture. We did not however return for any substantial amount of time. We did get to go to the top of the world's tallest building while we were there though. From Taipei we headed to Tai-Chung the middle city to visit an old friend of Tim's studying Mandarin at a college there. From there we caught a bus to Kenting with J. Kenting was certainly a favorite spot for us, and riding the coastline ridges on scooters was a nice introduction to scooter life. After, ... read more

“Just tell yourself, Duckie, you're really quite lucky!” Dr. Seuss hello. i get paid to speak English, travel, and shop...what more could a girl ask for!?! no. really though. my life in taiwan is pretty simple and easy..a life i am not sure why i am leaving, but it's time for a new adventure and i believe it will be just as great! My students had a Mother's Day celebration at school last week and it was very interesting to experience. There was song and dance. The students sang a very powerful Taiwanese song to their mother's. From what I was told in English, it was about how the students should never forget how much their mother does for them/ sacraficies for them to have a better life as they grow up and to never ... read more

Ma-Ma was off today, and decided to take us to a local shopping mall that had a unique attraction: a Ferris wheel on the roof. We borrowed another scooter and rode down to the mall, which appeared to be almost brand new. (This was also my very first time on a scooter, although I was riding on the back of Ma-Ma’s) Sure enough, there was a huge Ferris wheel on the roof, which we went up to see (but not ride). The mall had all the major labels you can think of : Prada, Gucci, Ferragamo, Starbucks. You name it. It was a pretty short trip, and we eventually made our way back to the HSR station for the trip back to Taipei. We said goodbye to Lindi, who was going back to Taichung by ... read more

Today Ma-Ma had to work so Lindi showed Wade and I around the neighborhood. We were in fairly close proximity to a large Fe’21 department store, so we went in to check it out. It was 12 floors, 2 of which were a movie theater. It didn’t look too different from Macy’s or Nordstrom, but there was a food court on the top floor and that was where we spent much of our time. We had lunch at a restaurant called “Cha for Tea” (odd name, since “cha” means tea in Chinese). This place was amazing: every item on the menu was either cooked with tea or had tea as an ingredient. For example, I had a cold beef dish and the beef was braised in oolong tea. There were also noodles that were made with ... read more

The best teachers teach from the heart, not from the book. ~Author Unknown I sometimes find myself struggling at school with the simple fact that presenting not only my students with the Western ideals, methods, and philosophies of the Western education system, but also one of my older co=worker whom i will say lately have not been the greatest support system, especially since attending college in the states, she should have an accepting and positive idea on how I want to present my lessons---In Taiwan, the schools focus so much on using the books in the classroom and following page by page, word for word, and to be honest you can see how much the emphasize this because when I want to steer away from the book, for even a short mini lesson, the students ... read more

and though I have been waiting so excitedly for the day to get back on that plane and head home to America..I am now starting to get a little terrified. Like I have said once before, Taiwan changes you. You are not the same person you once came here as, and I believe for me, it has changed me for the better. I have grown to understand and accept a lot about myself as a person, I have found out what makes me happy in life , I have had opportunities in life that people wait a LIFETIME to explore! I am terrified of the fact that going back, I might find myself not knowing where I fit in. I am terrified of settling into a world that i once knew as my comfort because ... read more
