instead I was a Mummy with an actual head wrap for Halloween. This past week in school we were finishing up the English Song Contest preperation with the kids, perfecting their speaking with words and their dance moves to the songs. Friday was the big day of perfomance along with the Halloween "Party" (Celebration).....first my school had me decorate a "ghost house" out of a tent, now the materials over here are limited so it was semi hard to create something so "scary" but we made it work....second i was to play a witch and lead the kids in a song and vocabulary about Halloween, well everything had been so up in the air all week, I nor really, anyone else, new exactly what to do, so we winged it and did just fine....having the ... read more

because I live in a big city I have sweet night markets, department stores, food, clubs, bars and the list goes on....though you would think I would have some pretty cool foreigners here, haha I have yet too name TWO, my friends still want to come my way when they are tired of their small towns (not to mention names, there will be a day when Muoy, Mike, and Jas get really really really really lonely and bored and can't resist the dirty south--anna too but her excuse is better-she is on the other side of the island)!!! Though when Rachel and Holly come down we are always so insistent on meeting new friends, well according to a certain someone I appear to be "unnaprochable" and "emotionally unavailable" so that is one reason I usually ... read more

ughhhhhhhhhhhhh i so couldn't sleep last night because as I was peacefully watching something on the TV i looked over and noticed this thing.....crawling down my chest dresser-------and by thing I MEAN A ROACH and it was HUGE and brown and its SICK antennas were flopping around AND UGHHHHHHHHHH i wanted to scream, but i stood up....caught a couple of breaths, got my shoe, and whacked it! and now he/she is dead in the trash and I am pissed at it still because the ROACH caused me to loose sleep, which caused me to wake up later than usual, which lead me to struggle to getting around today, which caused me to yawn all day, which caused me to be more tired than usual....though having my kids laugh and sing and try to dance all day ... read more

people go WHACK and it's all about competition! This past week Judy Jeffery (Iowa Dept. of Education Director) came to visit Paul and I and meet with the MOE people, with the discussion of possibly having an exchange program for Taiwan teachers to come to Iowa. I don't know if they will be teaching English or Chinese, I think Chinese would be more beneficial, beacause we really have NO ONE to teach that language, and with the ever expansion of the Asian headed over to North America, it would be something to highly consider. My co-teacher and I joined Paul and his teachers and pricipal in Taipei on Thursday to greet Judy and listen to her presentation on Educational System in Iowa-i learned some things I hadn't know before, so it was beneficial...and hello I ... read more

Thursday I headed to join my friends for a fun intertaining bbq weekend up north in Miaoli. Jason, Holly, and I got in Thursday night and joined Mike in his lovely town! We ate some dinner, checked out a local bar, and hung out with another foreigner named Paul. Friday Rachel and Muoy joined us. We headed to Carrefour later that afternoon to buy some groceries for the BBQ. We didn't know it would be total made ciaos. My god-it was like a kid in a candy store after an annoucement "EVERYTHING MUST GO! ALL CANDY $.01" It was nuts. After Holly and I picked some pretty delicious marinated meat and fresh veggies, Jason getting squid on a stick and Mike searching for seasoning and our cart filled with a case of Taiwan beer, we ... read more

Holly came to visit this weekend taking the midnight train down south on a spur of the moment-it was worth it. We got to see a police raid---yes yes....I have never heard of such thing, especially over seas!!! Basically we were dancing and all of the suddent the music shut off, lights turned on, and EVERYONE cleared the dance floor like a bunch of mice running from cats. We had no clue what was going on until about 20, not exaggerating, police stormed in. Now maybe they were looking for a certain individual, but we were so confused why there were CHECKING EVERY persons ID. We were asked for our ARC cards-yeah were cool-ha! We left after that whole situation and went outside and there were like 10 police cars up and down the street-ha---- ... read more

The children at Wun-Hua Elementary have to be some of the greatest ones I have had yet in a class-I still can't decide if I enjoy them so much because they can't correct me when I teach them something wrong, like many smart a$$es like to do when I am teaching at home...or the simple fact that they enjoy learning and want to learn. I can sing, dance, laugh, cry..ok so not all of the listed---but I can do many silly things to get my kids' attention and get them focused on learning English-we have had some pretty halarious "Telephone" lessons-"Do you like to play ball?" can easily be transfered into "You like ball." I know it's not the best to have "favorites" in class but when you have some chunky monkeys how can I ... read more

I have now had some pretty weird encounters with the stray dogs of Taiwan! The other night as I was scooting out my gates of my peaceful Villa and as I was going around the corner - passing a grassy knoll area, I was chased down by a pack of stray dogs. Now you may think these were large fearstly beasts, but NO, they were small little punks---who SCARED the crap out of me---"bark bark, run run, snarl snarl' the image plays over in my head everytime i turn that corner....I have learned to lay on the horn-sending out a warning to them that I will be coming around the corner--this time no stopping--they will be hurt!!!!!! The next morning on my way to school I was at a stop light and turned to my ... read more

As I now enter into my first offical month in Taiwan I am pretty proud of myself for slowly evolving into a Local. I sometimes burp in public and don't say excuse me, I find myself wanting to pick my nose in public, but I have yet not evolved with that custom, I look forward to nap time in the middle of the day, and I have officially purchased a mask, helmet, and rain coat, to accompany me in my scooter adventures and I will admit I look pretty cute---ha I drink about three green tea's a day and a coffee-just like the locals!!! I am proud to also say that I have memorized my favorite food and drinks in the Mandarin language.....for example...beef noodles (mein neu rou) and vegetable dumplings (sway gouw) and green ... read more
