So it's been about two/three weeks since I last updated everyone, but thats not always a bad thing. As this time I've just been really busy and havin a great time since I last wrote. After leaving Hampi I slowly started to feel better as my boddy/mind recovered from the exhausting india trip I put myself through(I was way way to ambitious and ended up nearly destroying the india section of the trip). Today I paid my first weekly room/food bill here in Hikkadewa and will probably be here at least another few days. I'm thinking of moving down the island a little farther to try and find a less crowded break but we'll see what happens. Most people seem to come and just get stuck here in Hikkadewa, which might end up happening to me ... read more

So my second time in Sri Lanka comes an end and I wonder what I have achieved and what the result will be. We had 3 students for computer class today and 2 of them were waiting for their English class afterwards. I hope that the 3 new computers will attract back the better students and that the teacher can start offering Web Page development as a new subject. I was unable to establish the internet link for the centre that I recommended last year, but with the lack of information and good advice here it is not surprising. I have also had serious stomach problems again for the last few days and in this heat that is quite debilitating. The computer teacher and I spent our Saturday afternoon trying to find some working CD drives ... read more

Once again I have been plagued by a problem in Sri Lanka. This time it is the squits and sickness and being ill in this climate sapped my energy and almost killed my enthusiasm. Thankfully the anti-biotics are now working, but the prescription I got from the hospital in Galle needed scrutiny and I finally followed the Lonely Planet guidebook recommendations on medication. The Rosie May charity group arrived at the weekend and had another attempt to persuade their builder to finish off their project. We were all amazed when he announced that he could finish it in 3 weeks, after he had already delayed a few times totaling 5 months! Finally he gave a more realistic end of next January completion date and now additional labourers have appeared from his other jobs. Progress is now ... read more

So almost exactly one year after my first adventure into voluntary work I have returned to the Child and Youth Development Centre, as promised, to see what effect my work had and what needs to be done next. I was hoping to return to a new computer classroom so that I could help fit it out. Unfortunately work on the new building stopped due to a dispute with the builder (I believe that he spent a lot of the money with little progress so he had to go). There is an orphan house being built by the Leicestershire-based Rosie May charity (www.rosie-may.com/46301/index.html) on land belonging to the Centre and they recommended to use their builder to help with the new classrooms. Fortunately they have also kindly offered to joint fund completion of the classroom building. Some ... read more

Well i have left India, and feel all together very strange about it. I definantly did not have enough time to do and see everything that i wanted to see, and even on my last night when i was in Madrass i was walking arounf this huge crazy city and was in some kind of amazment about the whole thing/place...then a tuk tuk nearly ran me over and i had to jump back into reality... i was watching the Indian news on that night and it was focusing these 2 couples who had been court kissing in public, by the police and they had been forced that night to get married!!! I just can not get my head around it all, and i really do not think that i get will. You may learn to get ... read more

My time at the Child and Youth Development Centre came to an end with a fitting climax - the end of year Pre-school concert. The little ones had been practicing since I had started at the centre, so it was nice to finally see them in their costumes. The stage preparations had gone on long into the night but it was great to see everybody turn out for this big event, including the founders Dr Jayasena and his wife. The school will close for the Christmas holiday later this week and I am starting a 5-day whistle-stop tour of the tourist highlights of the island (in the safe areas of course). I have included a selection of photos from my last days at the centre. It will be a pleasure to return next year and feel ... read more

I took my first full English lesson last Friday and just about kept the little darling’s engaged for the full hour. We tried to learn a song (although they are trained to shout in a Victorian style) and then we played bingo on cards I made from a cut-up calendar. I plan to take them for a final lesson next Friday and hopefully they will see that learning can actually be fun. After my first full week at the school I have established my realistic goals for my time here, but it is a real push to get everything done for the end of term celebration. Get all 15 currently used computers working, including buying and installing memory to allow installation of Windows XP on all the machines. Also spend some of the money that I ... read more

With Colombo done and dusted I decided to head down the south west coast to Hikkaduwa, a beach town known for its white beaches, surfing and chilled back lifestyle, and surely enough it has not disappointed. There’s not to much to do here other than swim, drink and eat. Not bad really, I actually feel like I’m no holiday and with beer prices of 110-50 rupees ($1.50) for a litre bottle you can’t really complain. I think I’m going to like this place. To get there I had my first experience of the Sri Lankan railways, a two and a half hour train journey for 91 rupees (that’s about $1.05), unbelievable considering the bloody tuk tuk cost 500R to get to the station. So traveling between towns can be cheap and easy but not hassle free. ... read more
