Today was a huge 14 hr day, somewhat unplanned. We started in high spirits in anticipation of the iconic slow train journey to Hatton in the highlands. Rising early we departed Kandy railway station not in a wooden carriage but in a rocking & rolling old diesel. Initial views were typical city businesses leading to smaller villages between dense vegetation & introduced pine & gum trees. Halfway through the trip, at a small village, the train made an emergency stop & we were soon to learn that 2 of 4 teenagers had been on the line & were caught unawares & were tragically struck & killed. We were preparing to abandon our plans for the day expecting a lengthy investigation but after 45 minutes the train started again but with passengers in a more sombre mood. ... read more

That night we were kept awake by the dogs in one village talking to the dogs in the other villages. They kept up their conversation until day break. Along with this was the buzz of the mosquito which woke me up from my broken sleep at 3 am. There was no phone in the room nor tea making facilities and so we had to phone Keith on our own mobile for morning coffee. We were the only guests and so we had our own chef. The food was superb - string hoppers for breakfast and spicy curries but I was already seriously bitten and the three of us had not slept so we sent a Whatsapp to Jagath to ask him to move us sooner than scheduled. We had a late-ish start to a tea plantation. ... read more

Up, davended, last breakfast at Weir House and into the van ready to go to the train station where we were to catch the train to Hatton. We were booked into 3rd-class reserved seats. We drove to Paradeniya Junction to get onto the train which actually went to Kandy and then back via Paradeniya to Hatton. The train came and I literally fell into the train at the feet of the officious ticket collector. Rather than help this poor old lady he yelled "reserved only" and disappeared. Don helped me up and ushered me into our seats. I was not hurt physically, just my pride. Hating the use of public holes in the ground I had not had much coffee for breakfast, so I was not in the best of moods - caffeine withdrawal. The loos ... read more

After a quick 1 night stop in Colombo, we boarded the early 5:50am train from Colombo Fort station to Badulla, with the intention of jumping off at Hatton (literally jumping). The train journey was amazing, even though it is meant to be a 'less beautiful' part of the line. We booked a 1st class seat, but this was not needed - 2nd class is just the same but has no aircon. A nice local man informed us we were coming into Hatton, we would have missed it otherwise, so we grabbed our stuff and jumped the 1metre down to the platform whilst the train was still edging along. It is still a 1 hour ride from Hatton to our final destination; Dalhousie or Delhouse as we saw it spelt locally. You can wait around for a ... read more

On Christmas Eve we undertook the 5 hour journey from Haputale to Hatton and then on to Dalhousie (also referred to as Del House by the Sri Lankans) to hike a sacred mountain. We arrived at 6:00 PM, just in time to take a look at the mountain we were going to climb, have dinner and get right to bed, setting our alarm for 2:00 AM. It is called either Adam's Peak and thought to be the first place Adam touched earth after being cast out of heaven, or Sri Pada, where the Buddha left a footprint on his way to paradise. Pilgrims have been climbing it for over 1000 years. Many people climb the mountain at night so they can be there at dawn to witness the sunrise. The town of Dalhousie is at an ... read more

24th Feb – You might be wondering why we got up at 2am!? It was because we were going to climb Adam’s Peak. It was so busy because everybody wanted to see the sunrise. Also they think Buddha came down to earth from there, You aren’t a Buddhist if you haven’t climbed the mountain. We got halfway up and it took 5-hours so we decided to go back. There was a problem because people were coming up. It took about 2-hours to get back. It was so slow and you felt so squished. People were pushing you and standing on your feet. Five facts about Adam’s Peak; 1. There are 5200 steps to the top 2. It is a 7km climb up all the way 3. There are shops all the way up 4. People think ... read more

23rd Feb – Today we went on the train to Hatton. When the train left the station we hadn’t got a seat and we made friends with some people. It got too hot and stuffy. The train suddenly stopped and people said, “the train has over heated”. So lots of people got out and just sat on the track. Sophie Today is not very interesting because we got on an old train. It was so tight and we sat next to a stinking toilet. When we got to the station we road on a tuk tuk to a tidy guest house. We went swimming in a freezing river. Craving for real camping by a waterfall - Try Aberdeen 3 of us got our back pack ready with extra 3 crew tent and got in to Colombo - Hatton public bus. Just 150 rupees per person we got down from the Ginigathhena town. We loitered around the town to grab some amenities including kerosoin oil and some wood available at the local market. With all things ready we got in to a Tuk Tuk and asked him to drop us at the path entrance to Aberdeen village. Guy drop us for just 350 rupees. We start climbing down the staircase that lead to the village and took a left turn to the jungle path. Some common dogs guided us the way but not the leaches. Woke at 5. Chanting tape on. Couldn't get back to sleep. It is 8am as I write this. I'm having my bed tea and I'm bloody knackered! All the other guests are leaving today - we're the lucky ones staying here for three nights. I wonder if there'll be new arrivals? Today we've asked Seelan to take us white water rafting. I'm apprehensive now as I'm tired, slightly hungover and it looks quite strenous from photos I saw up in the Summerville office yesterday. In fact, a sign said that you should only go if you are of "good fitness level". Yeah, right - that'd be me. Not. Still not sure if the road is open yet. The manager here has discussed an alternative plan where they can boat us across the lake to Summerville and ... read more
