After being thoroughly wowed by the cherry blossom festival in 2010, I decided to go back again this year. The plan was simple; take a bus to Busan and spend the following day in Jinhae. Buses between Busan and Jinhae run every 20-30 minutes so we figured this would be a solid plan. Although this is the most popular cherry blossom festival in Korea (with around 300,000 cherry blossoms and over one million visitors each year) we had no problems with transportation last year. This year was an entirely different story. We arrived in Busan Friday night and quickly settled into a love motel. After a leisurely breakfast we headed to the bus station, only to be shocked by the weaving line of thousands of people bound for Jinhae. We stood in line for a while, ... read more

So for my 27th birthday I did a temple stay and it was pretty amazing, although it wasn't what I expected. I anticipated a relaxing and thoughtful "vacation" where I would meditate and reflect on life :). What the reality of temple stay is is the day in the life of a monk, which was great, but definitely not what I expected. On Saturday we got a tour of Beomeosa temple - which is one of the most famous temples in Korea, which is beautiful! Then we had dinner - white rice, "panchan"(the side dishes-lots of veggies), cabbage/bean paste soup - so mashisoyo! (delicious). After we ate we had to clean our bowls with a slice of radish, haha. you put some hot water in your rice bowl and use your chopstick to push around the ... read more

January and February flew by! Since they were my last two months living in Korea, I knew that they would and I wanted to make the most of my final weekends with all the special people that have come into my life in the past year. I also wanted to see all the places and things I'd never managed to get around to in the previous 10 months. So, each weekend was spent having new experiences and adventures to make the most of my life in Geojedo, South Korea before one journey finished and the next began. Here are some photos from these amazing times:... read more

I'm back in Korea and it was pretty sad to leave all my wonderful family and friends but I am happy now that I am here :). The title of this entry comes from the first morning I woke up in America and walked into the kitchen and thought, "where's my rice???" I went out that day and bought some ;). I definitely eat rice every day here and at almost every meal. And that's they way I like it (uh huh uh huh) (yes I did). Ooohh, speaking of things that I like... I really like how I don't care so much about what others think of me or what I do and I feel like I got from living here (quote to follow) - I loooove my coteacher and she has taught me to ... read more

After 4 months, my stay in South Korea is coming to an end. the second leg of my international wondering will begin as i hit the ground in Bangkok,Thailand. I think that my time here in Korea was a good starting point for me to dabble a bit in Asian culture and get a taste of things i may experience elsewhere in Asia. things like foreign public transportation, strange new foods and a culture completely different from what i have been accustom to in the states for the past...29 years. so thank you Korea, you've been good to me. and thank you Rachel for being so patient, caring and hospitable to a first time traveler. without you i would have been lost and confused much of the time, not to mention homeless and penniless.i also need to ... read more

Christmastime! Like I said before, when speaking about holidays, it's tough to be away from home, but when you live on an island like Geojedo and have amazing friends like mine, it makes it much easier. On top of that, all the love from home made a world of difference. I was so surprised when I received a Christmas box full of presents, cookies and cards from all my friends and family. It really made my first Christmas away from home a special one, so thank you, thank you, thank you!! So, a week before Christmas, we all got together for a trip to the local orphanage. There are 50 kids there and we managed to organize a party and presents for each of them. I chose a 6-year-old boy to buy a gift for and ... read more

Annyeong haseyo!! So I'm getting less homesick these days and embracing being here more each day :). Although I still miss everyone so much (but I'm lucky that I miss you all so much because it means that I have an amazing life filled with incredibly wonderful people ;)). So I wanted to include a few interesting and or funny things about my hospital experience... First of all my co teacher informed me that I would have to bring my own chopsticks and spoon to the hospital (thought that was interesante). Everyone ended up being super nice at the hospital- one of the male nurses held my hand for a few moments before surgery :*)... after the anesthesia started taking affect the anesthesiologist pinched my leg and asked "can you feel?" and I said no and ... read more

So i've caught up with past events now i'm excited to move on to what's actually going on. That's the way this thing is supposed to be right? I've got a lot of free time... I want to keep an ongoing entry about the things i come across while hiking outside of the city or anywhere else i wonder. Mountains and the South Sea surround the city with one part of the range crisscrossed with trails. I'm reserving this blog entry to the things i find so i hope i keep running into creatures and cool shit.... read more
