Our thoughts on Korea! On April 19th we arrived back from Korea, uneventfully, unlike our trip over to Korea. We had a wonderful time and the highlight of the trip was seeing Michael and Danielle of course as it had been about 7 months ago that they left on their Korean adventure. A little intimidated at first, but excited to have the opportunity for such a cultural experience. April 8th - finally left Detroit, after sitting on the plane for 2 hours as they were fixing the cargo door. Consequently, we missed our connecting flight to Busan from Tokyo. The airline arranged a flight to Seoul, a stay at a hotel, and our flight the next morning to Busan. So instead of Friday evening, we arrived early Saturday eagerly expecting to be greeted by Mike & ... read more

Hello everyone!! We are sad to report that our wonderful visit with the Smith/Mayberry's has come to an end and they are safely back in our homeland (well, we are happy about that part!). Our recap of their trip will appear shortly, along with their thoughts and impressions of their wild whirlwind trip! And of course, lots of beautiful pictures! In the meantime, I wanted to tell the story of what happened yesterday at school. I (Danielle) teach an after-school class 2 days a week for high level English students. In this class I have a great group of girls that love speaking English and are a pleasure to teach. They love to ask me questions about everything, and Mike is often a topic of our discussions. They wanted to meet him so badly because one ... read more

First off, Happy Easter to all! We hope you had a wonderful, relaxing Easter weekend and enjoyed the fantastic weather!! Here in Korea, as with most holidays we are used to celebrating, this weekend felt nothing like Easter to us! After a colder and rainier than usual March, April has brought us some warmer and sunnier weather and we could not be more thrilled!! After being cooped up for the winter months, we are anxious to get out and explore more of this beautiful country. For me, the weekend started on a sour note as just after lunch on Friday my school informed me that they needed lesson plans for both my before-school and after-school extra class for the entire semester. Only, they needed them by the END OF THE DAY! Needless to say, I was ... read more

As the rhyme goes, it should be April showers which bring us May flowers, but in Korea, it seems to be March showers (and it has rained a lotttttttt here this month) that bring the wonderous cherry blossoms in April. While Toronto has experienced the first ever March with no snow recorded, Yangsan has seen almost double the amount of rain that they are used to! What a year to choose to be out of the country. Last weekend was the 40th International Kite Flying Festival in Busan at Dadaepo Beach. We thought it might be cool to check so we gathered a group of eager foreigners and went to the beach to see the spectacle. Well, to say the Festival was exciting would be wrong. There were some cool kites, some so humongous, colourful and ... read more

We had a one-day winter wonderland in Yangsan this week and it resulted in a coveted snow day for the students and some lucky teachers! All week the forecast had been calling for snow on Wednesday but when I told my co-teacher she laughed and said that wouldn't happen. Well, imagine our surprise to wake up Wednesday morning to a city covered in a layer of snow! It was exciting and we prepared for school all the same, not thinking much of the snow, until we checked out Facebook (gotta love it!) and people were saying it was a snow day!! At first I didn't believe it, but when I called Sunny, she confirmed that indeed, no school for the kids and I should "stay home and relax". No telling me twice! So as I prepare ... read more

My palms were sweating and I was racking my brain for how I was going to fill 40 minute class periods all day. I had no idea what I was doing. I had some cd's of childen's music that my friend Laura had given me, so I was very grateful for those! I also had workbooks for each class. But, with no idea what exactly I was doing, I knew I would have to think on my feet. 11am came far too soon and it was time for my first class...seven 4 year olds! They came flying into the room and excitedly took their seats. I introduced myself as Kailie Teacher, as they do here in Korea, then proceeded to name them. Twins John and Julie had already been named by their father, but the rest ... read more

It's close to 10pm on my second night in Korea when we finally arrive at mine and Tim's apartments on Geoje Island. It's felt like a long time coming. Leon first takes us into Tim's apartment, which is in an old building that may have once been a house or maybe a duplex, but is now divided into a four unit apartment building. There is a tall apartment building next door that Leon points to and says, "Kailie apartment." We climb the stairs to Tim's second floor apartment, kick our shoes off at the door and walk into the kitchen. It's got a pretty rank smell, but overall looks nice enough. From the kitchen we're through to the bedroom, which has an awesome bay window, then on to the bathroom, which is also the shower and ... read more

9:20am came far too quickly! I dragged myself out of bed and opened the suitcase that I was fairly sure I'd be able to close again. I then searched for the most work appropriate and least wrinkled clothes I could find and threw on some mascara in hopes that it would fool people into thinking I was awake. I did not. Leon was waiting for Tim and I downstairs and we were off to the Tongyeong Beyond Advanced school. Beyond Advanced is a chain of private English language schools spreading throughout South Korea with the Geoje Island branch being its newest addition. We walked in on the first floor of one of many tall buildings to see a large reception desk with several ladies having rapidly fast phone conversations. We past them by and were led ... read more

Well hello everyone and welcome back to my travel blog! New adventures have begun and I am very excited to share them with you all! So to start off, it was a blistery, cold Tuesday morning when I headed off to Detroit Metro with Nana, Mom and Dad. We'd gotten about 6 inches of snow the night before, which helped with the whole leaving Michigan thing. But on the other side of things, I was already blubbering by the time we walked out the door and I had to say goodbye to my little cat Oreo. I pulled myself together for the ride to the airport, but before long, the rest of the goodbyes came and it was very tough. I guess every other time I've traveled I've known my return date, where this go around ... read more
