(Tina)Arrived here ok and headed for the Joo Chiat area as one of the hotels we checked out looked like they had availability, and we were right so booked into the Gateway at 95$ a night, we are here for 6 nights and are trying to keep our spending down cos its alot dearer here than all the other places we've visited. Anyhow to cut a long story short there is an airshow here to coincide with our visit and so they said for the other 5 nights they were going to put our rent up by 30$, which seemed a bit steep to us. We did our usual trick and checked around the neighbourhood and Lynda came up with one opposite that would only charge us 75$ per night, which seemed like a bargain to ... read more

Singapore is one of the best airports we have been too, you name it and the airport has it, twice. Getting from the airport to the city could not be easier, a simple train ride and you are there. Knowing what we have read about the location of our hotel we were a little apprehensive of the area we were staying, however there as nothing to worry about, there were more than enough punters to keep everyone happy. I would say that we are well travelled, but we have never ever seen anything like this in our lives! I will try and explain. It’s like walking in the middle of Thoresby Market but rather than haggling over goods, you can haggle over the price of a you know what. There were all shapes, sizes and ethnics ... read more

Ons hostel ligt ... read more

...then Singapore people should marry Indians ;-. Singapore is the absolute opposite of India when it comes to the things that all us tourists complain about when visiting India. They might come to a middle way: Singapore without the silly rules and fines, India with clean streets. Arrival Monday evening at Changi Airport. After customs comes a walk through the airconditioned duty free zone. Like.. like... like... *really, really* clean and modern. More modern than Heathrow! Free internet for everybody to use (15 minutes limit). Hard to move on, I just wanted to go enjoy the luxury asap! Get a hot chocolate or something...anything yummie that I would not have found in India. But no time for that. Had to move on, go through customs and pick up my luggage. 15 Minutes later, I had a ... read more

The best way to introduce Singapore, if you've never been is: 1. Chewing gum is illegal. 2. Littering is punishable by fines (S$1,000 for first time offenders). 3. Drug usage or trafficking is frequently punished by death. 4. The food is awesome, and tremendously cheap. We knew all this from our last trip. Singapore is, in many ways, the good son of Asia. Well behaved, well-to-do and straight-laced. A fuddy duddy country if you will. Our last trip took us to the most affluent parts of town, through the CBD and the meticulously clean streets. Along the Singapore river on a bump-boat, past merchant bankers eating expensive seafood on Clarke Quay. To the Ministry of Sound, where despite a psychedelic decor and throbbing techno, there's a complete lack of drug taking or drunks. For someone from ... read more

I'm sitting in an internet cafe in Singapore now. We've seen a number of strange things today and yesterday, and eaten some of them too. There are some parts of a pig that shouldn't feature on your dinner plate - though if you do come to Singapore and eat a mystery piggish substance, make sure you ask what it is after you eat it, not before. That's for another blog though. Today I'm just popping down a few quick lines to say goodbye to everyone at home. Emma and i will miss you all: it's a really strange feeling to be choosing to leave a bunch of people you actually like. We've been very lucky in the last few years to live with good people, have a supportive family and some crazy friends. In some ways ... read more

I am writing this entry from aboard the Theodor Storm, the freighter that will be taking us on to Brisbane and the final leg of our adventure. We have just learnt that the freighter will be leaving on the morning of the 19th so that will be in about 36 hours. As such, this seemed like a good time to give you an update on our time in Singapore, although we won't be able to load it onto the blog website until we're in Australia. So when you're actually reading this, we're in Australia... WOW! We arrived on the bus from Melaka and pre-booked a room in the Emerald Hotel, in the Geylang district (also the red-light district). We only had a vague idea of where the hotel was so I naturally volunteered to head off ... read more

Wow, Singapore is a million miles away from what we've been use to in the last month. It was a welcome break from the intense nature of India. We have never met such friendly people before, our hostel manager Eric was particulary sweet and helpful. The city itself is really clean and well organised. It seems to always want to better itself in what the city has to offer its people and tourists alike. Singapore is renowned for having lots of shopping malls, and this is no word of a lie, there are hundreds. Our hostel however was located in a more modest area of Singapore making it easier to observe and be part of the locals life. Sentosa Island has some lovely little beaches, one of which led to 'Continental Asia's most southern point'. The ... read more

Well singapore, singapore!!!! we had the impression that Singapore would be clean and clinical hmmmmm we saw very different on our 24hr visit. We Knew that the hotels were going to be alot more expensive than we have been used too so did a bit of research on the net and found that Geylang was the cheapest area! We arrived by bus and made our way through the border where there are no atms for those people reading this that may do the same thing. It only took us 4hrs by bus from Kl to Singapore a short journey from what we have been used too ha ha ha! We jumped in a taxi and told him where we wanted to go.......'Geylang area please, we are finding a hotel when we get there' he replied with ... read more

I arrived in Changi airport on Friday18/5 around 5pm. It was a longer flight from Shanghai than i thought it would be. It took five and a half hours. The airport is massive. Singapore is used by many as a stopover point on the travels through asia and australlia. Everyone there was very courteous and whoever you walked past always greeted you. Went to the toliet after going through the first bit of customs and the cleaner was just too nice to me. Almost scary nice. Cleaner "Hello sir. how are you?" Me "Fine, thanks" Cleaner "Is there anything i can do help?" Me " No thanks" On my way out he then handed me some paper towels. When i had dried my hands with them, he took them off me and placed them in ... read more
