On the taxi ride from the airport our first morning in Singapore, I casually asked the driver, whom until this point had spoken two words, what he suggested we do with our three days on the island nation. To our surprise and delight, he answered in choppy but understandable English. The next several minutes were filled with random suggestions from the Bird Park, to the World’s only 24-hour shopping mall, to Orchard Street and Chinatown. A brief pause followed his whirlwind description of tourist attractions before the driver looked in the rearview mirror to analyze us.
