... read more

1. When arriving to port, learn from the trike driver that you are in Siquijor town proper and not in Larena, where your accomodation is booked. Run back to the boat to hear that no, this boat stops here, which would be okay enough unless you had managed to get on the only boat that does not go to the main harbor of Siquijor island, that's Larena. Haggle for a trike ride to Larena in the dark, wet harbour of stupid Siquijor town. 2. Write lists while waiting for the whether to pick up. It's pissing again. 3. Gossip with your fellow weather victims as there's really not much else to do. At the Kiwi Lodge banter for hours with Heidi and Roman, an Australian-Swiss couple who in early 2000, out of all places met at ... read more

First off… Thanks to everyone for the lovely comments from our first BLOG… while we are loving our time in the Philippines updates from home are always great!!! Currently we are on a small island called Siquijor (See-Key-Hor). It is a very beautiful island and we are staying at a lovely little place called Coral Cay Resort and we are loving the beautiful weather and our scooter (Red Lightening). A couple interesting things we have come to discover about the Philippines are: #1- Everyone speaks English to some degree, all the signage is in English and so is TV (not that we have seen much of it!!!). Communicating and getting around is super easy... a luxury we do not take for granted when traveling... #2- There are very few westerners in the Philippines so the local ... read more

...yes, we'll explain the blog title a little later. Our ferry ride to the island of Siquijor made approximately 70% of passengers and crew vomit. We played on the knowledge that Filipinos don't really like to sit next to Westerners (on all other journeys we have been avoided like the plague!) and took a bench each to lie down and sleep through the rough ride! Hee hee how awful are we? Siquijor is a volcanic and lush tropical island surrounded by superstition and intrigue as it is supposedly home to healers/witches with magical powers. Obviously this is bullshit, but we were told that the Filipinos are a very superstitious people and who are we to argue if they think Harry Potter and Sabrina live on the island?! Recently we even saw a Filipino made horror ... read more

I had a pretty relaxed day yesterday, read a book watched some TV and wandered around Dumaguete, the Cathedral and the area around Quezon Park are scenic and the Promenade is really attractive. I bought a book by Anne Rice I should have known better, women authors always ruin things by trying to write in love and sex scenes, this one was between a bodyless spirit and a dying woman, I probably wont bother finishing it now. This morning I caught a boat to Siquijor Island there are supposed to be witches here although I am pretty sure I havent seen any. I have just spent the last 5 hours triking all over the place looking at churches, waterfalls and beaches and Asias oldest convent, this island is really quite beautiful for the most part, ... read more

An afternoon quickly slips into evening. The families packed up their picnic baskets hours ago and the teenagers are slowing drifting home as well. Now only Jarrod and I are left at this perfect oasis of fresh green pools and staggered waterfalls carving a path through the smooth rock and mossy vegetation. Ducking underwater and behind the rock wall there is a small cave hidden behind the upper falls. Rubbing shoulders with the grooved, wet rock we hid away peeking out through a basketball sized hole at the water tumbling down in front of us. On the lower set of falls there is a slight cliff-hang where you can find shelter and solace behind a screen of white water. It’s a romantic place to pause… and kiss. The lower falls are also a perfect place to ... read more

The Attic A ferry, jeepney (an elaboratly painted share truck/van with wooden benchs in the back and luggage storage on top), and a huble-huble (older motorbikes equipped with customized racks for larger loads) ride later we had arrived at KooKoo’s Nest near Dumagete on Negros Island. We didn’t have a reservation for a cottage, and they were all full, so we ended up in an improvised room which really was the attic above the bar. Width-wise the attic just fit a mattress and length-wise we had just enough room for our bags. Standing was not an option, but, we've discovered, most things can be accomplished kneeling anyways. Although we were in cramped quarters it didn’t really matter because daylight hours were spent at the beach in lounger chairs reading or in the open sea diving. Turtles ... read more
