Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

Palawan is a beautiful island full of waterfalls, "archipelagic" islands, caves and one enormous underground river. It was hot the entire time we were there, but the sun was shining too, so we got to enjoy the beaches. (Except for the ones with jellyfish.) We started in Puerto Princesa which is the main city on the island. We tried to explore the old cathedral there, but it was closed. We tried to explore the museum there, but we were unable to find it. We did, however, find something better, Shakey's Pizza and Mr. Donut. I ate more donuts in the last [View Full Entry]

Dear All, This could well be one of my last blog entries as I leave the Philippines on Sunday 15th and head back to Singapore. It's yet to be worked through but I’m hoping to visit Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos, or at least one for a couple of weeks before coming home! Since the last entry around the time of my birthday I feel I have really got out and experienced what the Philippines has to offer. After a few days in the office with Aaron and watching Benjamin Button (great film, Aaron cried, I nearly did.....but didn't!), it was time [View Full Entry]

Wreck Diving At Last Asia » Philippines » Palawan » Coron
It was the whole reason why I started. I was 28m deep. Hovering around a Japanese Cargo Ship, it was my first time. So enthusiastic I was to discover, soon my oxygen was near empty and as quick as I was there it was over. Wreck diving is the best diving experience of them all. Palawan is the far west island of the Philippines. A different island to the rest and out of the mass tourist base. Still clinging onto the ‘off the beaten track’ it’s main purpose is to Wreck dive and snorkel whilst relaxing on a jagged cliff face [View Full Entry]

Me in my SCUBA Gear

I thought I heard something but I wasn’t sure? It was about 5am and two fat arse girls come stumbling in after a big night out. In the dorm room they snuggle in the bottom bunk next to mine. I glance over to get some confirmation. It’s forthcoming with the sight of a forearm moving back and forth. This was one night in Manila and this was the beginning of my transport and accommodation sagas of the Philippines. I arrived in Clark - Manilla airport from Malaysia and Clark is the worst positioned international airport possibly in the world. It is [View Full Entry]

5 Do's for El Nido Asia » Philippines » Palawan » El Nido
1. Check into "Alternative", a lovely guest house offering rehab, shiatsu and veggie foods. Wonder if this really is what you need. Then plan an Amy night out after all the snorkelling is done in a few days. Marvel the fact that you actually plan to get waisted. 2. Hire a boat to take you island hopping and snorkelling in the Baquit archipelago. Then spot corals, cool fish, sea snakes and a tv crew shooting Swedish Survivor in the back yard of a luxury resort. 3. Swim into the Small Lagoon on Miniloc island. Then speed back to the boat when [View Full Entry]

Me and Nancy on the shore of the Island of the entrance to the Subterranean Underground River
Dad, Nancy and I arrived Thursday morning in Puerto Princessa, Palawan. Woo Hoo! It was about 27 degrees celcius when we landed and humid as hell. Nancy had a stellar sleep (as she says) the night before we left (her first night in Manila) but I on the other hand only had about four hours sleep before we left. Dad, Nancy, Ann and I decided to have some drinks on the porch after dinner and after Nancy and I had packed for Palawan. Dad went to bed around 9:20p and Nancy retired not long after but was a complete trooper. Ann [View Full Entry]

5 Do's for Port Barton Asia » Philippines » Palawan » Port Barton
1. Finally get some serious tanning done on the picture perfect beach of Port Barton. It was about time! 2. Join a bonfire party of local boatmen and a few random foreigners on the beach. Grill fish and drink rum with Nestea. When sufficiently drunk, singalong to a campfire version of Zombie, the ever lasting Philippino favourite. 3. Try finding yet another waterfall and a white beach. Fail miserably but hey, there are many more to come. 4. Remain in an oblivious state for a few days as there's no internet connection nor coverage for the phone. Wonder when was the [View Full Entry]

1. Spit dust after the trying bus ride and check into a nipa hut on the beach. 2. Meet your new neighbour, Steve, whose Hebrew name is Erin, a Hollywood born bum who lives on social supplement and voted for McCain. Act respectfully when he tells you that he's been travelling for 19 years with the money the government gives him and has been to 43 countries. Let him believe that you think it is an achievement as if you didn't have more flags under your belt. Then learn all about his years in Amsterdam and he's undying love for prostitutes [View Full Entry]

18.01.09 - El Nido is to me what the Philippines is known for. Beautiful beaches, great seafood, as yet unruined by high rise developments. We only spent two and a half days in El Nido, though I wish it had been longer. During that time we discovered that most of the accommodation was pretty pricey and bad value. We stayed somewhere that was not pricey but still represented bad value, in my opinion, just outside of town. Our first evening was spent eating seafood right on the beach, surrounded by torches, sipping coconut juice straight from the coconut. It felt like [View Full Entry]

1. Go see the crocodile farm and butterfly garden. Then read in your obscure German guidebook that the third captive attraction of the surroundings of Puerto Princesa is a penintentary farm. Wonder whether human prisoners would be less dull than crocodiles. 2. Hangout with some local kids who are strangely proud of the fact that their school is "celebrating its centennial" and the authorities are going to build "a centennial gate" to commemorate it. Then discuss their parents getting divorced. Let the kids guide you around and finally to the baywalk. Enjoy sunset there. 3. Have Mexican f [View Full Entry]
