Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

16.01.09 - Once in Manila we'd planned to head to Donsol, but the flights were too expensive so we headed to Puerto Princesa (using the rather wonderful Cebu Pacific, without whom it would have been a nightmare getting around the Philippines). We checked into the House of Rose, as the fan dorm was far cheaper than anything else we could find in PP. The first day we spent walking around the city, which was nice enough, and along the coast line. The second day we had booked a trip to see the Underground River, billed as one of the Phillipines'leading tourist [View Full Entry]

The trip has changed again. Kyle, and I are no longer traveling together. We believe it is for the best. I am headed to Manila to buy another camera because mine has broken. And I can't imagine traveling with out taking pictures it is my way of communicating what I have seen because I have difficulties putting it into words. I went diving through world war II wrecks, fresh water thermal lakes, both were so different I have so much fun. I have became very comfortable with my bouycany and ablity to stay stream lined, which is what most begginers struggle [View Full Entry]

Deleted last text because I didn't write it so here are some words from me. El Nido was a resting point for me. I stopped wearing my cast. I have quit drinking rum it makes me go crazy. I finished my birth chart and a couple of other books. I have quit traveling with Kyle and Jane. We where all driving each other crazy. I made friends with 3 local families, and I have thought about starting a rock climbing business in El Nido. From my birth chart I have developed a much deeper understanding of who I am. I think [View Full Entry]

Monday 22 September to Sunday 2 November Phillipines and its islands (7,107!) has been a real highlight of our trip to South East Asia so far and we strongly recommend it to everyone. We found stunning beaches, coral reefs teeming with fish, waterfalls, few tourists and friendly locals. We spent most of our time on Palawan Island (Puerto Princesa, Sabang, Port Barton, El Nido, Coron) and also visited Manila and the rice terraces and villages of North Luzon (Sagada, Tinglayan and Batad). Highlights The karaoke-mad and friendly Philippinos, who break out into (mo [View Full Entry]

Cuyo Islands Asia » Philippines » Palawan
Not quite being able to face the full 36 hour journey back to Palawan which the previous time had been across VERY rough seas we decided to break the journey in the little-known Cuyo islands halfway in between Palawan and Panay in the Sulu Sea. I had got of the boat for an hour the previous time to discover friendly locals, few restaurants, no cars and a relaxed sun-drenched atmosphere that, despite a lack of tourist attractions other than a seventeenth-century Spanish fort, tempted us back for a stay of a few days. What we discovered this time was quite different; [View Full Entry]

We arrived at 4 a.m. at Manila airport, where we had to wait four and a half hours to catch our next flight to Puerto Princesa, capital of Palawan Island. The 'arrival hall' was one of the smallest I've ever seen, with just one luggage belt it certainly was getting crowded, having just 2 airplanes landed of which one being an Philippines Airlines Boeing 737..... When we finally had our bags we took our first tricycle to our guesthouse. It was a very nice place, with a massive garden / courtyard and everything done in wood. After a much needed shower [View Full Entry]

I haven't written for quite a while and I'm happy to say it's because I've been having the time of my life. I think the last time I posted on here I was in El Nido town . Immediately after writing we found ourselves in a videoke bar, as you do, sitting centre front singing away happily with a few bottles of Red Horse and San Mig Lite. We spoke to a few of the other patrons, one guy in particular was called 'Bilog' (roughly translated as 'circle' or 'round' in Tagalog), we later found out from his sister that he [View Full Entry]

I met up with Cha in Manila last Wednesday evening and we had a late night chilling and catching up about our travels. It's really nice to see a familiar face and to share my stories with someone in person. By 11am on Thursday morning we had checked into our flight at the new cenntenial airport in Manila to catch our flight to Puerto Princesa in Palawan. Apart from being slightly delayed the short flight went off without a hitch and we were like giddy school girls from the excitement of being in a new place. We checked into a hotel [View Full Entry]

Palawan, Philippines - October 3 - 12, 2008 Only 9 days here but this incredible paradise deserves a chapter all to itself. We flew to Puerto Princesa from Cebu City and were immediately impressed with an efficient little airport, a clean city and a courteous and helpful tricycle driver (what they call tuk-tuks here). Very high quality crafts and two excellent restaurants here. We toured Honda Bay on an island hopper and did some snorkelling that was only OK due to cloudy water. But we saw some interesting fish and the beaches were superb. We then headed to The Underground River [View Full Entry]
