Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

Hi all hope everyone is well back home. So the last time i wrote was about a week ago and i have been a busy little traveler since, so here we go. I left off last time that i was dying in the internet cafe from not sleeping and waiting for a ferry. So i went to the pictures and got out the film at about 3.30, the ferry left at 4. So i had to jump on the train and zip across Manila, then i had to get a trike through the city to the docks, thankfully this is the [View Full Entry]

It was a friend and I who, on a wing, decided to visit the beautiful island of Palawan. Since everyone was either going to their own country/ province for the holiday, it seemed like the perfect time to venture our own motherland. Unfortunately since Palawan is home to the most beautiful beaches in the Philippines, flights were out of our student budget. In our desperation, we decided to take the cheap way, which was though the Super Ferry. For a little over 3000 pesos ($60) we arrived in Puerto Princesa (PP) after literally 30 hours. We departed the port in Manila [View Full Entry]

Mud hill

Friends warned me to be ready for the 8 hour ride there, but I didn’t expect it to be so rigorous. On the way there it was raining. The roads aren’t so developed either. There would be a stretch of paved road for 10 mins then dirt for another 10. Along our journey, it started to rain. What this means is mud formation and in a van that is over loaded, nothing good could come of this. As soon as we approached a mud hill, we revved and revved up but never got over. We soon slid down the hill only [View Full Entry]

It was that time of the year again - Donna’s birthday and she chose Sabang in Palawan as the place she would like to be to celebrate. So we got a flight to Puerto Princesa and decided to make it the same day to Sabang...problem is that the flights land at 9:30am and the jeepney doesn’t leave until 12noon (well sometime after, it depends on how the driver is feeling!) so cue Donna and Neil hanging around for a jeepney to leave for 3 hours! Our time in Sabang didn’t start so well with the jeepney ride as the jeepney helper [View Full Entry]
