The air conditioning had kicked in at some stage during the night, I had an unfitful sleep. The mattress was too hard and my sciatica was playing up and around 3.30am I was awake and needing to stretch. Eventually got back to sleep and we were woken at 6.50am for breakfast. Sweet pork and filipino sausage and eggs with rice. We said our goodbyes to our host who gave me two boxes of the hopia to take for our journey. We had booked the subtarenean river cave tour and an hour or so journey we gave over our ID so that the tour guide could get permits for us to do this. Apparently it takes at least an hour, so while we waited we were offered two choices, mangrove river cruise or zipline. Each had a ... read more

Day 2 We had complimentary breakfast and needed to be there before 9am, so had set an earlish alarm. The buffet consisted of rice, noodles, deep fried sweet hotdogs, fried eggs and a slightly spicy dish and mushroom soup... it was good. A swim in the rooftop pool for an hour felt like we were officially on vacation. The weather was a balmy 32 degrees, slightly humid but exactly what we wanted. Packing our suitcase back up (We travel lightly, 17kg suitcase between us plus carry on) and we got a Grab to the airport. Air Asia asked us to check in 2 hours before and over an hour of that was spent in line for the bag drop. A quick lunch of sweet doughy buns filled with pork and a donut kept us saited. We touched down in 45 minutes from Manila to Coron in a tiny plane, seating no more than 60 people! Coron is one of the islands that make up the Calamanian group. After a 20-minute winding ride through the rolling lush green landscape, we arrived at Acacia Garden situated in the town of Coron. As we chucked our backpacks down for lunch, the sky turned grey, and a powerful thunderstorm passed through, bringing enormous amounts of rain and heavy winds. Once the storm had passed, we hitched down a tricycle and rode into town for a mere 15p per person! This was our first experience of Coron town, which is vibrant with colours, people, smells and in every direction there is something to look at! We manoeuvred our way through the crazy traffic, over unstable drains ... read more

... read more

Here we are, the last blog of the year! We actually did another stop of 4 nights in Dubai on our way back before spending Christmas and New Year Eve at home, but I won't write a blog about Dubai, done this multiple times before. Busuanga is a short hour propeller trip from Manila. Due to connections time, we spent the night in Manila, this time as the Sofitel as the new number two of the hotel is a friend. Once in Busuanga, it's another 45 minutes 4 by 4 drive to the Cashew Grove resort. The first part is a little cute countryside road, than it simply turn into a dirt track. No shopping around here, if you don't have it with you, you will not find it here! I heard about this place while ... read more

Bad bugs = sand flies. These tiny little evil black dots can barely be seen but they suck your blood and leave itchy welts. We read that the female can burrow under your skin and lay its eggs. Lovely! Good bugs = fireflies. These little flying bugs don't bite or sting. They hang out after dark, lighting up the trees like Christmas lights. We ran into both kinds within a day of each other. We booked two nights at the Astoria hotel, four hours South along the coast from El Nido. At $100 a night, it was by far the fanciest place we'd stayed on the entire trip, but we just did it for the kids as a special treat. They couldn't care less about an expensive hotel room (and frankly neither could I) but the ... read more

It's almost time to leave El Nido after being here for about a month. Tom left for Puerto Princesa yesterday and we'll be doing the same in a couple of days. I've written blogs about all of the famous boat trips, but here's all the other little things I've been wanting to write about... The Simple Life We spent most of our time staying at Morning Walsh resort on Corong Corong beach, known locally simply as "Green House." We had the luxuries of air conditioning and a hot water shower, so it wasn't a simple life in that way. However, now that we'd moved away from the hustle and bustle of El Nido town, the sound of tricycle horns and revving engines was replaced by the cock-a-doodle-doing of roosters. The kids could roam around the amazing ... read more

I already wrote a blog about Tour A. Over the course of a few weeks, we did the other three boat tours. Here's the scoop... Tour B - Caves We did this trip with Saldi as our guide again (although Tom called him Salty!) but this time it wasn't a private tour. We had a Spanish couple on board too. They seemed nice but couldn't speak a lot of English. At least Scott got to practice his Spanish! The first stop was snorkeling from the boat. Somehow we'd not gotten around to having the kids practice, so now was the time! Jake flatly refused to put his goggles on but Kyla tried it, holding her breath for a second or two to look under the water. She loved it, and kept popping her head up and ... read more

The Tao Experience ~ Nautical Paradise As often happens in the world of travel, you meet people with the best and most recent recommendations for the next stop! I really enjoyed having an unplanned trip earlier this year and it worked out well - I met a (now) friend at Tiger Muay Thai who told me about the Tao experience in Palawan, Philippines. Fairly soon I was booked on to a boat trip amongst deserted islands! In my last blog I mentioned that El Nido is quite touristy as well as being stunning. The Tao Experience gave me a real opportunity to see the beauty of Palawan without the acne of tourists! The day before the journey we met for a briefing and were introduced to our jolly crew! They informed us what to bring and ... read more

El Nido from bucket list to reality… So a few years ago I saw a photo taken by a professional, of this place I had never heard of, called El Nido. I had to look up where it was and then it was added to the bucket list. I’ll be honest, I was put off for a while because the transport links weren’t great, having to take two flights and a six hour drive. I recently learnt that it’s now just two flights – one to Manilla and one to El Nido, and pretty quickly I had my trip booked! Being in Asia already made it quite accessible for me. The “airport” in El Nido is awesome. It’s hardly an airport to be honest! One runway and a small shack where we were greeted by singers ... read more
