Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

Sunset at Alimangwan. My sister and her husband
I spent holy week in Palawan with my family for our bienial family reunion. My family flew ahead of me because i wasnt allowed to go on leave coz there were a lot of clients in the bank before the long weekend. So I flew alone a day after they did. The NAIA terminal 3 was gorgeous. Its been a while since the last time I flew on an airplane before last week. And the last time i was on a plane, i couldnt see outside the window. This time, i had a window seat. Clouds look breathtaking when theyre beneath [View Full Entry]

I was unfortunate enough to visit a Filipino jail house. My iPod had mysteriously vanished on a bus ride through the island of Cebu. It had dropped onto the floor and mysteriously found it's way into a fellow passenger's bag. Gone. So I had the dubious pleasure of sitting in the San Vicente Pulis Station for 2 hours while the casually dressed cop laboriously filled out a report. He was wearing the standard cop attire - shorts, thongs and a Philippine Idol tshirt. A big fuck-off pistol strapped very conspicuously on his hip served as the only hint that he was [View Full Entry]

In a Jeepney
In a Jeepney

It has been about five days since my last post, so I’ll try to catch you up. When you last heard from me, I was in Baguio City. Our time there was lovely and included many unforgettable times. We took a jeepney to the market—not just any market—but the market. I already mentioned several fruits that are available here, but the very best one is called lychee. Lychee is a small red-skinned fruit with a whitish translucent flesh that grows in clumps and has a flavor similar to that of a perfumey white peach. It’s quite unlike any other fruit that [View Full Entry]

Philippines, you're doing it wrong. Your food is feral and your toilets do nothing to alleviate the pain that the food causes. For many first time and uninitiated Asian travelers it is the image of the infamous Asian squat toilets that bring on a case of the heebie-jeebies. Let me assure you, it can get a lot worse than the squat pan. The Philippines has had a long social, political and military association with the United States. Good Ol' Uncle Sam imparted a love of basketball, corrupt politicians and most tellingly (in the opinion of both myself and my rear), western-style [View Full Entry]

An epic journey has taken place over the last week or so; we've been constantly on the move, over Indonesian land & sea, and through many far-flung, internet-free towns and villages. As a result, we've been unable to conclude the Filipino chapter of our adventures. But now, with a days rest and a quick internet connection, its high time to finish telling the tale - sorry to have kept you all waiting so long! We left you last boarding a bus back to Manila, after our exhilarating, whirlwind romp around the countries Northern region. Fortunately, there was no repeat of the [View Full Entry]

We left Apo Island on March 14. We left early, at 8:00, hoping for calm seas and a dry trip. Of course we prepared for a wet trip, for ourselves and our bags, and it was fine. We had calm seas and arrived in Malatappi 40 minutes later, mostly dry. We walked half a mile to the main road and only had to wait 5 minutes for a jeepney to Dumagueti. It took about 30 minutes to get there. It dropped us near the center of town but we didn't know where we were. We pulled out our lonely planet [View Full Entry]
