Hi, On the boat from Cebu Island to Dumaguete on Negros Island, the older gentleman who had told me about the Seniors' discount also recommended the Bethel Guest House. He said it was on the sea front, of a high standard and owned by his friend. It was very near the heart of Dumaguete which has a cathedral, bell tower and park. It took a jeepney and then a tricycle to get there and the Bethel was a very nice hotel, hardly a guest house. It is located on the famous seafront Rizal Boulevard, named after the national hero Jose Rizal who once made a stop in Dumaguete on the way to Dapitan City where he was deported. A single room with air conditioning (A/C) in the Bethel was €13 after discount. Unfortunately the WiFi ... read more

Hello everybody, We arrived in Dumaguete 2 weeks ago. The area is a little university town with not a lot of tourists so first impressions were good. We stayed in a place called Harolds Mansion which seemed to be the most popular hostel. The hostel had BBQ nights and this gave us the opportunity to meet lots of new people. Within the first few days we visited Casaroro falls. We got a Jeepney which is the local bus and then a haba haba which was a ride on the back of a locals motorbike up through the mountains. We then had 300 steps down to the waterfall. It was beautiful although there was a big flood last winter which had ruined most of what was a path leading to the waterfall so it was quite difficult ... read more

Well, I guess I’d better apologise in advance. After the previous few blogs that contained such wonders as snorkelling with whale sharks, swanning through deserted islands and of course the Mother of All Festivals, this edition will likely seem quite tame and relatively uneventful. I hadn’t really stopped much up until now - I had been moving every few days and doing lots of amazing things, but with the impending prospect of teaching eighty kids looming quite large, I relished the chance to just stop, relax and let my salt-encrusted and now quite natty hair down... After the festival and with the cacophony of drums still ringing in my ears, I embarked on a fairly uneventful bus trip south across the island of Panay. I arrived in Iloilo City, took a quick look around at this ... read more

So here I am sipping an icy cold beer on the island of Negros and I suppose I’ll start this blog like I seem to have started so many in the past. Life is hard. Truly. Beautiful beaches, stunning islands, snorkelling among pristine reefs, meeting wonderful people and a really amazing experience today that seems to have etched a permanent smile upon my face. After a long, tedious and extremely drawn-out two-day journey by plane, taxi, ferry and finally on the back of a motorbike in the torrential rain, I arrived in a secluded little spot on the north side of the island of Siquijor. My home for the next four days was one of only two basic but ever so lovely little huts perched on some rocks overlooking the Mindinao Sea. The only sound was ... read more

Nukahdin taas hetkeksi, kunnes sain uudelleen herätä. Tällä kertaa kamalaan paskan hajuun. Annoin P:lle vihaisia ilmeita hänen nukkuessa ja kävin myös tsekkaamassa vessan, että onko siellä tapahtunut jotain, josta en välttämättä haluaisi tietää. No kaikki oli ok.

Käytiin hotellissa suih... read more

We bumped into Aylssa when we were checking out and found out that not only were we on the same flight to Cebu, but we were all planning on catching the same ferry to Dumagette. It always handy to meet fellow travellers heading in the same direction, not only do you get to make new friends, but it helps with the cost of taxis. Check in took ages. This was mostly due to the people in front of us in the queue. Instead of having the normal one piece of check in luggage everyone had separated their stuff into dozens of bags and taped up cardboard boxes. Each item had to be weighed separately and when some people were asked to pay excess baggage they looked totally surprised as if they had no idea that 40kg ... read more

Dick expected to die in his sleep and he didn’t mind a bit, in fact he was quite looking forward to it. After several months of dithering, he finally had taken possession of a motorized bicycle. He had never driven a bike before. He didn’t even know if ‘drive’ was the correct verb, or if it was proper to call it a ‘bike’ at all. He wanted to call it a scooter, but that made him feel like Dennis the Menace, so he called it ‘the fucking bike’. The owner had taken him down to the beach, showed him more or less how it worked and issued dire warnings against the power of first gear, which would later be repeated by Dick’s genial neighbour. He tootled around for twenty minutes, coughed up 12,000 pesos and launched ... read more
