Summer in July!!! Puerto Galera July 17, 2008. On to Puerto Galera with Franie, classmate in college and new addition to the Lakwatsera duo, with Gie and of course me, the true blue Lakwatsera. We headed to Batangas City at 6:00am thru bus at Edsa Station for P170.00 each. Arrived in Batangas Port at 8:00am. Boat ride is approximate 1 hour and 30 minutes 500 pesos round trip fare. Not bad. We booked for accomodation at White Beach Resort and 3 bed cottage with A/C, cable tv and toilet and bath cost us at 850 pesos off-peak season. We had our lunch, sinigang na baboy and grilled fish and rice which cost us 300 pesos. After lunch, we got back to the cottage and took a short nap. At 4pm headed to the shore and it's ... read more

Nattens regnskur hadde skylt ... read more

Apo Reef Natural Park is located in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro. "It is acclaimed as the best in Asia and second largest in the world, as the diving mecca of the Philippines. It is a 34- kilometer reef, located 20 miles west of Mindoro proper, with a narrow channel running east to west, dividing this reef into two lagoon systems, north and south. Underneath, the clean waters, fine white sand and numerous corals are visible. The Apo Reef includes the fascinating bird-populated islands of Binangaan and Caois del Bajo, which have a variety of birds that can irresistibly lure birdwatchers. The surrounding waters are abundant with marine fauna and luxuriant coral growth represented by approximately 400-500 kaleidoscopic coral species. Marine life includes varieties of sharks, sting rays and manta rays." (www.tourism.gov.ph) How to get there: From ... read more

We said goodbye to Gary and Milena on Boracay and headed north to tiny North Pandan Island. The island has been leased by a French man for the last 21 years and he has built up a good little business consisting of several bungalows, a restaurant, a bar, and a dive shop. There are rumours that, when his lease expires in four years time, the government have plans to kick him out and build a casino. It's terrible if it happens, and we decided we'd better see it whilst we still can! After arriving on the island on an incredibly noisy pump boat, we leaped onto the awaiting white sand and checked into our reserved room. We'd booked a budget room nik-named "The Bronx". The Bronx consisted of five rooms all joined together, made out of ... read more

Our group of 21 departs LAX in route to a week of scuba diving in the Philippines...my first international diving adventure! We had a long trip, 15 hours to Hong Kong, 2 hour layover, 1 1/2 hours to Manila and supposedly a 2 hour bus ride to Batangas where we would then get a outrigger that takes us to our resort on the island of Mindoro...another 1 1/2 hour ride! But add to that a 3 hour delay when our bus out of Manila breaks down half to our destination! It was noonish, around 100 degrees and probably 100 % humidity on a crowded bus with no air conditioning and no breeze. Fortunately we had some FUN people that help to make a bad situation a LOT of fun! Man did we laugh! We finally arrived ... read more

Summer is about to arrive. For Filipinos, its a time when decisions have to be made whether to hie up to the cool mountains or bask in the sweltering heat in one of the many beaches of the Philippines. I usually have a hard time deciding where to go since I love the cool mountain breeze and waking up to see for everywhere, and I'm also a trying-hard beach bum hehe. Last year, I was able to travel to a couple of places, some familiar and some new to me. I've been visiting White Beach Puerto Galera every year for the last 3 years, and this year will be no exception. I missed going to Baguio last year, though. I made a promise to go up to Baguio at least once a year, because I really ... read more

Valentines is Valerie's day. Valentines day or Val’s day for short. My wife, Valerie Navarrete and I celebrated it at White Beach, Puerto Galera. This coincided with IBM Daksh, my new company’s outing the next day. I took a leave a day earlier than the team building activity to celebrate with my wife. We arrived at White Beach at around 2:30PM after a 2hour bus ride from Manila to the Batangas Pier and an hour ferry ride to Puerto Galera. We stayed at Mendelluke’s Suite - this has become my favorite due to its reasonable room rate and excellent location. A beachfront room, near Coco Aroma on the left side of the beach (facing the sea). The nicer beachfront resorts and more upscale restaurants are here. We had a casual dinner beside the beach, it was ... read more

After Luzon, Mindoro was my next island on my way South. The ro-ro (roll-on roll-off) ferry from the city of Batangas, Luzon to Calapan, Mindoro is quite efficient. The ride is around 3 hours. The cost is around P600. The paper works needed are the bike insurance and registration. No bribing involves. The first thing I notice on the town of Calapan is its relative cleanliness. People are also friendlier compare to Luzon. It was dark when I arrived, so I stayed overnight. There was going to be a marriage banquet on the hotel premise. Disco and ballard music blasted through midnight. Like most small town in Philippine, restaurants and shops close early. I grabbed a few sticks of barbeque chicken (just like Indonesian satay without the peanut sauce) and some other street foods for dinner. ... read more
