I have completed my blogs on Indonesia, to include some kind of a guide on what food to eat around there from Jakarta through Yogyakarta through Bali. So, why not one in my own country? I have been reading up on blogs about the Philippines and what you guys are eating, that I thought I should do this blog to guide you where to go and what to order. Feasting On A Lechon The celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain once visited the Philippines and tried our lechon. He then declared it is the best he has ever tried in all his travels. This roasted pig adorns almost every buffet table as families and friends celebrate occasions from birthdays to anniversaries to graduations to weddings to baptisms to fiestas. It is the equivalent of a royalty dish. It ... read more

Manila being the capital of the Philippines holds power, commerce, trade, security, entertainment - therefore a lot of history and culture of the country. First time travelers to the country may find the city very friendly, for almost everyone in the Philippines speaks English. It is also a good representation of the whole country - though not complete - for in Manila you can find Binondo to represent trade and commerce, dating as early as the first Chinese traders because it is near a harbor. This area is little China town - covering Divisoria and Tutuban. All sorts of merchandise can be found here, best deals and freshest finds for it is the center of all markets in Manila - covering local produce as well as imports. Then, there's Recto Avenue up to the stretch of ... read more

Selling Sin Meat, Unstoppable? Joewel V. Saba While majority of Filipinos prayed together as a family, attended Lenten retreats, served the church, extended help to charity and followed the station of the cross or at least kept a Lenten journal for the forgiveness of their sins, prostitution in my country never stopped amidst the observance of atonement. There was no exercise of fasting or abstinence of human lust because of one very common answer- poverty. That is what their justifications are. What abstinence or fasting can be exercised when these poor countrymen of mine are futuristic to what living they would get after the Lenten season? Would not it be fasting, if they could not eat anything? So they have to sell their meats to earn a living. Not by kilograms but through the night. They ... read more

I wanted to escape to a tranquil place. Sometimes, traveling does not assure you your most desired moments of peace and quiet. The weeks before my 28th birthday had been most emotionally exhausting and Cubao, Quezon City, a place I have been living since March 2008 (after my three-year stay in Tokyo), had temporarily lost its appeal. Cubao, crowded and dirty as it is, has always been the most convenient spot in the city where I mostly hang out with friends. It is one of the busiest transportation hubs of Quezon City, and from there you could get to most places in the country, and certainly to all neighboring provinces and islands. Should you need to go malling, Cubao has its list of respectable shopping centers (Gateway, Alimall, Farmers Mall and Wet and Dry Market, Shopwise, ... read more

This is my 3rd day in The Philippines with family and I've already completely wound down. I haven't done much of anything the last couple of days except catch up with my cousins, eat (a lot) and sleep, which I've really enjoyed. My plan is to start travelling around Phili in the next couple of weeks and am working on the route. I'm thinking of starting with Cebu and working my way through Negors to Boracay and ending in Palawan before flying back to Manila. I'm most looking forward to Palawan. I've heard it the most amazing beach and I'd be a fool to miss it. Hopefully I'll have everything worked out in the next couple of days. :o) It's pretty humid here at the moment, more so than anywhere where else I've travelled so far ... read more

The La Mesa Eco Park A sanctuary amidst the forest of Quezon city. A place where you can explore, have fun, enjoy and relax. We had planned this during the holy week when we had our Bisita Iglesia. When we went La Mesa, we were thinking of a different place, well, as we enter the vicinity both sides have old tall trees. And I wonder, do the eagle have nest there somewhere up there..... ... read more

There is nothing more relaxing than staying in a place near a a body of water. And that happens to be near Manila Bay, where the cool breeze from the sea is soothing to the senses. I checked in at a first class hotel nearby so that whenever I feel like taking a leisurely stroll, I just walk a few blocks to the area called Bay Walk. Every morning is a new experience as I meet people and take interest in what they are doing. One thing for sure, they don't bother you except in a casual manner like a greeting or a smile. Unless you start the conversation, people will just keep on walking. I would buy a newspaper, call a vendor selling peanuts or cigarettes, or hail a taxi and randomly call for a ... read more

I had an early night last night. My relatives dropped me off at Gil Puyat Tram station and from there I made it back to my hostel. The hostel was having a cocktail party when I got there. I think the host has one every night. The guests I met earlier where hanging out having cheese and wine. I wanted to go to the Starbucks across the street but decided to hang at this local bar, what looks like an American ex-pat bar, instead to write some postcards. Later on I ran into the kids from Denmark again (yes, they all speak like Lars Ulrich, the drummer for Metallica). They said they went to Taal Volcano that day. It was just OK. They invited me to hang out at The Rolling Stones bar down the street ... read more
