We made Bantayan from Malapascua Island in around 4 hours by boat+bus+ferry, 400 PhP / each although ferry ticket cost 170 pesos, as seniors we paid 120 instead, but only when we were leaving the island. There is also 20% discount on every transport if you are senior over 60. A very beautiful island and very sincere people. We stayed at Marlyns Beach Resort which may be the best for budget, 1200 PhP including breakfast for two. The staff was so friendly and helpful. The islands economy best for chickens 1,400,000 and produces 1 million eggs/ day. Tourism has just started and in the first decade I think will hit the peak. We visited Virgin Island 1 hour sail by the resort’s boat with a German family. We had bought our fish, vegetables and fruits before ... read more

We arrived in Bantayan after a 4-hour bus ride and an hour-long ferry, which were both extremely cheap and well-organized, and the porters were easy to dissuade and no one tried to steal our luggage from the bays under the bus (you fearmongering travel bloggers, please stop writing useless advice!). We were picked up by a driver from our resort (this sounds much fancier than it is, though it did involve a printed! A4 sheet with our names on it) and soon realised that in our haste to get a nice place to stay that was not fully booked we had forgotten to check which side of the island we were on. However, it ended up being totally worth it, even though there was no beach to speak of really, and most of the time the ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Cebu » Moalboal February 9th 2013

Our trip over to Cebu and up to Moalboal was an eye opening and beautiful one which took us along the East cost of Cebu. It was only a short 20 minute hop over to Cebu from Sibulan to Lilo-an (P65 for the ferry or P45 for a banka), then a tricycle up to Bato and finally a bus to Moalboal. The coastline that we saw on this 1¼ hour journey was stunning, we were met with crystal clear waters when we got off the ferry and this continued on uninterrupted all the way to Moalboal and probably beyond. Admittedly at times it was quite hard to see what we were passing as our bus driver seemed intent on breaking some sort of speed record to get us there and we were literally on a white ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Cebu » Malapascua February 5th 2013

As the title of the blog suggests, Malapascua is a place that we both fell in love with – However up until about an hour before we left, we almost cut-it from our itinerary completely due to all the bad weather forecasts we were reading online and the fact that to get there we would have to contend with a fairly long journey from Cebu. We decided to go with our gut instincts and try it out and if the weather was that bad, we could always move on. We first needed to make our way early to the northern bus terminal on the outskirts of town and board a yellow Ceres bus heading to Maya. This journey took around 4 hours but passed some spectacular scenery along the way, we then had to negotiate getting ... read more

Singapore had been loads of fun but as any city of its size and modernity (not that there are THAT many) it had also proven rather frenetic, and we were excited at the prospects of the next stage in our travels: two weeks in the Philippines, where we had allowed ourselves to only choose two major destinations without any flying in between, and where the only major thing on our schedule was not having anything on our schedule. These, of course, were hard rules to abide by when each island seemed, upon closer inspection, to provide its own brand of endless activities, be it snorkeling, mountain climbing, driving around, or even sorcery. But we had decided this would be our «vacation» before heading to Australia (and completely changing our way of travelling), as well as of ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Cebu » Cebu City February 1st 2013

After taking our first plane for what seems like an eternity, we landed at Mactan-Cebu Island Airport just outside of Cebu City at 1.30am – This is located in the Visaya’s region of the Philippines where we had chosen to spend most of our time for the next 3 weeks. We quickly breezed through immigration and collected our bags before exiting the airport and after passing the tourists taxi’s which charge in the region of 3-4 times the price of local taxi’s we managed to find a nice driver who was willing to take us to our hotel in Uptown Cebu for the metered price. As we would be arriving fairly late and after not having a hot shower for a little over 2 weeks, we decided to push the boat out and stay in a ... read more

KM 25 My Flight with Korean Air It must be something about flying to Seoul… As I was not able to check-in on-line, I wasn't really sure where I was going to end up seating wise. I was assigned the aisle seat I requested in Vancouver. By the time boarding started to take place, I could tell that there weren't a lot of people on this flight. I didn't get too excited because I had been here before on my last flight to Seoul in 2008. I thought the same thing back then only to have 150 Korean school children show up at the gate at the last moment… Thankfully, an Air Canada agent felt sorry for me and upgraded me to first class and the rest was history… This time I was one of the ... read more

Sunday, 28th October 2012 Our Tiger Airways flight was scheduled at 1810hrs in the evening. So we basically had the whole day to rot ourselves away at our favourite Starbucks outlet. For lunch, we opted for pizza at Da Vinci's which strangely exuded among other things an American Old Town feel rather than Italian. To sum up my Philippines experience from a Singaporean perspective:- - The Philippines is not a shopping destination even though there are numerous modern malls within the metropolitan area of Manila. The average visitor should however go back with a couple of packs of dried mangoes which made great souvenirs given the nice prices. The best prices were found within Cebu island itself where the snack originated. Metro Supermarket @ Ayala Center seemed to offer the best prices after comparing prices from ... read more

Saturday, 27th October 2012 The drive from our hotel to downtown Cebu City took about 40 minutes in heavy traffic this morning. We asked the taxi driver to drop us at Fort San Pedro - one of the chief sites in the city. These days, the fort no longer served its intended function. It is one of the last pockets of greenery left within busy Cebu. Fort San Pedro wasn't huge but it was nonetheless a peaceful spot amidst the downtown chaos of Cebu City. We took a walk through Osmena Boulevard which would lead us to Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, an impressive church that was built in the 16th Century. This is Philippines oldest church and certainly a site that all visitors - believers or non-believers should visit while in the city. The facade ... read more

Friday, 26th October 2012 After breakfast at the Bayleaf Hotel this morning, we took our last look at Intramuros before heading to the airport in the afternoon. This morning, we covered our final bit of itinerary at Fort Santiago, located along the western edge of the city. Our early afternoon flight meant that we didn't have much time to enter the grounds of the fort to take a good look of the place. All we could manage were a couple of shots and a quick stopover at one of the souvenirs shop along the street. We finally came to an end of our trip in Manila as we made our way to the airport. Personally over the past two days, I had developed a love-hate affair with this city. I loved the friendliness of the service ... read more
