April 9-11 -- My friends and I had a vacation at the Queen City of the South and Philippines' oldest city: Cebu. We stayed at Hotel Cesario, just beside Bellavista Hotel. After landing in Mactan International Airport at around 6 AM and leaving our bags at the hotel (the check-in time was 2 PM but the guys at the hotel was kind enough to let us leave our bags), we went to Magellan's Marker and Lapulapu Shrine. To get there, we rode a multicab with a Punta Engaño sign. Magellan's Marker was built in 1866 to mark the spot where Lapulapu and his men killed the Portuguese explorer during the Battle of Mactan in April 27, 1521. The first thing we did when we arrived in Cebu City after a pretty long and stressfull travel from Denmark was to catch a bus to the northern city of Maya on Cebu Island, it took about four hours, and I had hoped for some sleep after the long flight, but in the Phillippines the locals are very proud of their cocks (read roosters) - that they use for their traditional cock fights - which means that they carry them with them inside the bus where they occasionally pet them. Today we walked to the downtown area of Cebu on a quest to find Pier 4 (they say "pier cuatro"). We had bought our ferry tickets from SuperCat and wanted to see if it was a walkable distance for the morning. The downtown area reminded us of Manila even more than what we'd already seen so we decided to head back to a safer neighborhood. My laundry wasn't ready, but Ronald's was, so we picked that up and then went to buy our plane tickets from Cebu Pacific. Turns out they charge you a fee on the internet and on the phone for their services but in the office they don't. Strange, I thought. We arrived in Korea fresh and eager to begin work, only to find out that our school would be closing in a week for winter vacation. Of course, this was less than ideal since we had just been uprooted right before Christmas; a time when most people are winding down for the year, sitting by the fire with family and drinking eggnog, not moving to a new country. Regardless, we decided to seize the opportunity leave the freezing cold of Korea behind (reportedly, this is the coldest winter in 30 years, and last night the temperature plummeted to a dismal -17 C).
