Background: During the late 18th and 19th centuries, Great Britain established colonies and protectorates in the area of current Malaysia; these were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. In 1948, the British-ruled territories on the Malay Peninsula formed the Federation of Malaya, which became independent in 1957. Malaysia was formed in 1963 when the former British colonies of Singapore and the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak on the northern coast of Borneo joined the Federation. The first several years of the country's history were marred by Indonesian efforts to control Malaysia, Philippine claims to Sabah, and Singapore's secession from the Federation in 1965.

As it happens, Ao Nang delivers. If you read my fairly gargantuan last entry you'll know that I was running out of affection for Thai beaches, but one more turned out to be just the trick. We left Ko Lanta at 07:30 in a mini-bus, which was a good start, air conditioned, and the driver overtook almost continuously, only pausing for the car ferry to return to the mainland. I like overtaking, and this guy "doesn't afraid of anything". Oddly, despite pressing on through out the journey, he made time to stop off to pick up some live fish, and drop [View Full Entry]

Get your motor running...

I’m definitely getting into the swing of the airline lifestyle now. Nearly every pen I have has got some obscure hotel logo on it, and my notice board consists of many memos, reminders, phone numbers, etc scrawled on napkins from the galleys. My watch is always on the wrong time zone, my suitcase is never unpacked, my thighs are bruised from passenger’s elbows and I swear I have more currencies in my wallet than destinations we serve. I’m already at the stage of referring to the cities by their 3 letter codes and have almost forgotten my room number and which [View Full Entry]

We didn't thought that what started as a calm and quiet day in Clark would later end up in a exciting and fun-filled KL adventure. Armed with our gut feels, strong determination and our heavy backpacks, we decided that this quick Malaysian stop wouldn't be complete without saying hello to these Asia's twin towers. Just a glimpse. A few minutes. We'll make it fast. Cliche as it may sound, but really Time is Gold. *** Arrived KL past 4pm. Flight to Bangkok is 905pm. 1-way trip to Petronas from KLCC is approx 57mins. We must Petronas and took the risk. We [View Full Entry]

The parting of the ways came for Al and me this morning, I panicked as usual when my booked coach was half an hour late to pick me up. As it turned out we spend in under 40 mins to the airport and i had time to spare!! I have arrived in KL , the landscape looks very different from HK and mainland China . We are much nearer the equator , its monsoon period so the sky was grey and light rain splattered down but its 86 degrees so very deceptive. the vegetation is very luch lots of palms before [View Full Entry]

Monday 26.10.2009 Day 12 We fly from KL to Hong Kong on the way from the airport to our hotel we got a private cab who said it would cost $98 hkd to the hotel + tolls this was about how much I had read it would cost. When we got to the hotel the driver told us it would be $980 hkd! We informed him we were told $98 and he said to talk to the person who had organized the trip for us so he phone then and put me on. Just a quick update. Yesterday we queued for a couple of hours to get tickets to the Petronas Towers trip and skybridge. It's a bit nuts and really noisy. I took a book and lots of people take cameras. I don't see the point in taking photos of tourists queueing. We get tickets for the last tour of the day at 6.30pm and head back to the hotel for breakfast. We then venture to Bukit Bitang. It's more shopping, more malls, more insanity. We get lost and in a good way find the Pavillion. Yet another huge mall with gigantic food [View Full Entry]
