Background: During the late 18th and 19th centuries, Great Britain established colonies and protectorates in the area of current Malaysia; these were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. In 1948, the British-ruled territories on the Malay Peninsula formed the Federation of Malaya, which became independent in 1957. Malaysia was formed in 1963 when the former British colonies of Singapore and the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak on the northern coast of Borneo joined the Federation. The first several years of the country's history were marred by Indonesian efforts to control Malaysia, Philippine claims to Sabah, and Singapore's secession from the Federation in 1965.

What a way to spend a few short days off! When my friend Ayden told me he'd be stopping in Malaysia for a few days while crossing the globe I jumped at the chance to have some face time with someone from home. I love all my friends in Korea but they only know me as Korea Megan, while people from home know me in a different light. After a few speed bumps and what seemed like a dead end, some light did eventually burst through the end of the tunnel. So with a Korean friend willing to come in and [View Full Entry]

Day 7 - KL We left Siem Reap early for KL. We checked into our 5 star accommodation and relaxed for a while before we hit up KL tower and the Petronas Twin Towers. Somehow we took a wrong turn on the way to the KL tower and the 15min walk turned into a 1hr walk. If we took one simple left turn we would have saved walking in a huge square... oh well :( An hour and 537 calories later we made it. KL tower is the 4th tallest building in the world standing at 421metres. We went to the [View Full Entry]

And so, after the party celebrations, a slightly light headed Mr. Byrne had to make his way through the underground system and over to the travel Agent to catch his VIP bus into Kuala Lumpur (K.L. baby!). Malaysia here we come. Pretty crazy coming out of Singapore as we drove for literally about 20 -30 minutes, past a Lamborghini dealership which had the sexiest Lambo Ive ever seen in my life and then past all the cranes of the shipyard, looking out for Maersk containers with a tradewood stamp on them..he he, and literally over a bridge...A pretty long bridge at [View Full Entry]

Hey guys thanks for your comments and messages.. KL was fun but loud crazy and smelly. The traffic was unbelievable and I am sure lots of people die there. Who knows whether the drivers will stop for a red light or not! Ate some yummy indian food, went the worlds largest Bird Park and generally walked the city and fended off people trying to sell me ladies perfume on Petaling St. Not sure KL has the most fun things to do of any big city but it was a cool place to start being fairly easy to figure stuff out. 3 [View Full Entry]

Day1 - KL Airport At KL I ran into a guy from work who works in the same building as me. What are the chances of that?? Small world.....He was on his way to Vn. I might meet up with him there if we get time but the schedule is FULL. I had the whole day to kill at the airport and managed to squeeze in 5 meals. The first time I got ripped off was at KFC. I ordered food and she asked "what sort of drink I wanted with my meal". I thought it was included and after she [View Full Entry]

Waiting is never my strong point, but waiting for a train seems different. You sit in a train station and wait, but its not like waiting for someone to come over or for santa to come down the chimney when you are 8 years old; it;s strangely peaceful. It is watching fellow travellers with interest, wondering where they are going and thinking of what they must be up to just to pass the time. Or in this case its sitting outside Starbucks with your little travel companion of a computer to update your blog. Our Mad dash through Malaysia has sadly [View Full Entry]

(Day 555 on the road) I am back in Kuala Lumpur, and I love it just as much as on my previous few visits here. Of all the Southeast Asian countries, I definitely like Malaysia the most, with its mix of immensely friendly and tolerant people and its diverse natural beauty. If I ever chose to live in a country in this part of the world, it would almost certainly have to be Malaysia. This time however I was only here for a one-day stopover on my way back to Indonesia. In the morning I met up with Ali, the guy [View Full Entry]

Thursday 8th October 2009 - When our plane landed, at 9.30pm (2hrs behind Australia) the aim was to follow the crowd to find our bags - Luke got caught up looking at the Cigars worth thousands of dollars - and we lost our crowd. This airport was huge, really different - we had to catch a train to the other side to collect our bags. I was surprised at how quickly this all happened, and at how organised this airport was, or at how good we were at reading the signs in Malaysian. Luke arranged for us to get a taxi [View Full Entry]

In the U.S., it’s pretty much drilled into you the moment you sit behind the wheel, that “pedestrians have the right away.” There are nice little cross walks on every street, you feel comfortable stepping out in front of slowing cars & they even give you a ticket if you don’t abide. In “KL” this is not the case. We quickly learned after being dropped off at the Puduraya Bus Station from the airport that dancing in & out of cars & scooters doing 80 through the city is a crafted sport you don’t want to lose. There are not many [View Full Entry]
