So we left Kuala Lumpur after 7 days of relaxation (and some may say laziness!) and headed off on the next stage of our journey to Gemas where we were to pick up the 'jungle train.' We were keen to get on with our travels after our recuperation period and so arrived at Puduraya Bus station with anticipation. The bus (as expected over this side of the world) was delayed- this set a tone for the rest of the journey! The driver of the nus was not the best either tailgating petrol tankers on the motorway or overtaking on blind bends (a style of driving we have become accustomed to in South East Asia! Unsurprisingly, a child was travel sick in the seats next to ours (you can imagine how Any felt about that!!!!) Eventually, we ... read more

We made it back from Nha Trang for our flight to Malaysia and arrived in Kuala Lumpur yesterday morning. KL seems like a familiar city because it reminds us a lot of Toronto: very culturally diverse with a little (insert country name here) for every corner of the globe. The hostel we are staying has a very homie feeling. There is a common room with a tv and dvd player and a kitchen to make meals if you want. Making your own food (even if it’s just breakfast) is such a treat after having to eat out all the time. When we were on the 12 hour bus ride from Nha Trang back to Saigon I had started thinking about all the things that we have mastered and learned while we’ve been in South East Asia. ... read more

So, having finished up in Thailand i flew to Kuala Lumpur..little did i realise that i'd pretty much left Asia as well... I found an okish place to stay in an area called the Golden Triangle (no idea why!) and set about exploring the local area and found only shopping centres. Not Asian shopping centres though, pretty much your bog standard western shopping centres. They even had a Topshop and Topman! Wasn't going to complain too much though as it meant the chance for my first real bit of western food...needless to say it was great breaking from noodles and rice and soup lol. I didn't really do too much on the first day as i was slightly knackered from the previous couple of days...but that didn't stop me getting the attention of some local Malay ... read more

Hi all, After going to Ko phangan we got a flight to Singapore to meet up with Luke. Singapore is such a nice city, and its big, very big. We got around around on the MRT (mass rapid transit) which is kind of like the underground in London but about a million times more clean and efficient. We got booked into a dorm style hostel in Singapore, which was better than I expected, and much more social. On our 2nd day there we went on the Singapore flyer, a huge ferris wheel like the London eye. The view from the top was amazing, hundreads of cargo ships in the bay and you really get a feel for just how modern and built up the city is. After that we walked onto and partially around the Grand ... read more

We have been terrible about updating this blog! So now I am going to try and recap our adventures from the past couple of weeks in Peninsular Malaysia. Sarah and I flew into Kuala Lumpur on June 7th and planned to stay for a couple of days. We were fortunate enough to stay with one of Sarah Hall's friends, Iris, who she knew from Guelph. Similar to Singapore, KL was sweltering, and with 15kg packs on our backs we were ready to hibernate in the air conditioned malls until we could meet up with Iris after work. However, we got dropped off outside of Iris's apartment building and set off to track down some food. Unfortunately due to my sub-par map reading skills we paced Bukit Bintang (the busy shopping strip that Iris lives on) about ... read more

Now that our stomachs were full and satisfied, it was time to pamper our aching bodies. Sarah mentioned that it would be a cool idea to get massages at a spa - then she mumbled something about fish. I figured it would be a spa with aquariums…and I sure likes fishes. =) We went up Bukit Bintang looking for a good place to get pampered. What’s funny is that every massage place or spa we encountered had its windows plastered with pictures of flowers, what looked like schematic diagrams for feet, and barebacked women face down on tables. I don’t know where spas in Malaysia get their creative for advertising from, but there must be a printer making MAD monies off printing poster boards with pictures of feet on them. img=http://www.malaysia.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/re... read more

After a few relaxing yet busy weeks back home we decided it was time to head off to Asia once again. We decided to return to Bali for the summer so Matt could spend his time surfing and I could get on with some art work. On the way we stopped off in Malaysia to spend a month on our favourite beach island but ended up spending a week of that in Kuala Lumpur sorting out our Indonesian visas. We stayed in a pretty scabby place with a tiny room and no window and it wasn't until the first morning that we realised we were sharing our bed with a family or should I say a community of bed bugs! Matt was particularly badly bitten so we asked to change rooms. The new room wasn't much ... read more

KL ,the capital city, is a shopper's mecca, everywhere you turn there are hulking great plazas and malls. Not being “shop til you drop” people, we were keen to see what else KL has to offer. On the flight in, it appeared to be a huge sprawling city beneath us but the tourist hot-spots are remarkably close to each other . However pedestrians are low on the food chain here and the most time-consuming part of our forays into different areas, was negotiating a safe place to cross the roads. We spent an excellent day walking through markets and Petaling Street in Chinatown and checking out the architecture on our way to the KL Lake Gardens. The iconic building of KL is without question the Petronas Towers, but it's at night that it comes into it's ... read more

Transportation Woes Leaving an island seems like it should be an easy thing to do - just get to land. The “ferry” picked up from the island to return us to the mainland at 8am, noon, and 4pm. We wanted to catch a 9am bus to Kuala Lumpur. We spoke to two bus ticket agents on the island about whether we would catch the bus if we took the 8am ferry. One said “no problem.” The other said, it depends on the weather; if it is bad, the ferry may be delayed, and may not go at all. If we bought a ticket for the bus and we missed it because of bad weather, our ticket was invalid for the next bus, which was not until at 8pm anyway, and arrived at 5am in KL. ... read more
