Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, has about 2 million people and is also the biggest city in Malaysia. We arrived very early this morning, after a 9pm flight from the Hong Kong Airport. The flight was 3.5 hours long! Luckily, the time flew by...I guess we've become used to long journeys by now. I wonder what driving for a few hours will feel like again in the States. Arriving at our hostel (Red Palm) by taxi at 2:30am meant that all we did was get a room key and immediately fall asleep. Well, tried to. The World Cup was playing at the restaurant next door, so sleeping at first was a little difficult with all the crazy cheering. Kuala Lumpur is a difficult city to describe. It's the most culturally diverse city we've visited ... read more

hello everyone, we are having a brilliant times, heres an update of what we have been up to: sunday night - Went for tea at a chinese street restaurant near our hotel, then went for a drink at the aptly named tiger bar which had one pumpm serving tiger beer and that was it. One drink and then we were ready for bed. Monday - Slept well, got up about ten, went to find some breakfast and ate at first cup cafe which seemed quite appropriate (hannah discovered that soft boiled eggs, can be very soft indeed, otherwise known as raw!) but we had some toast and beans and some free coffe. We found a mac shop (jess always does seem to be drawn to them on arrival anywhere as her long suffering parents know) looked ... read more

We have arrived safely in Kuala Lumpur! Flight was fine when we finally set off after an hour delay, apart from a bit of turbulence early on that had us clutching each others hands (and our beers!). We had a bit of a strop initially when we realised that we were on a row of 3 seats after we booked to be in a row of just 2, hannah was planning to complain when we got home (just like her mother always does!) but when we realised we actually had all 3 seats to ourselves we soon shut up and got some sleep. When we arrived we decided we should start as we mean to go on and not waste half our money on a taxi, so off we went on the bus to KL city ... read more

Melakka Sadly, we left wonderful Singapore and got a bus to Melakka on the West coast of Malaysia, about 2 hours from Singapore. We stayed in traditional and atmospheric Chinatown in a very cool guesthouse (Jalan Jalan) that was on a street filled with lovely artsy shops (dangerous). We had a nice time wandering around the historic town centre, checking out Dutch Square, old Portugese churches and canals. We sampled the famous Melakka Pineapple Tarts (goood) and spent ages browsing the colourful night market in Chinatown. We went to the Museum of Malay People, Kites and Beauty (sounded curiously interesting) but it turned out to be a bit of a disappointment (you could get better information from wikipedia!!). We ended up buying some amazing and very reasonably priced art and pottery from a couple of local ... read more

Friday 28 May 2010 Thwarted again! Here we are back in Kuala Lumpur having got back on Tuesday night from Kho Phi Phi, near Phuket, to travel to the port of Klang on Wednesday to see our shipping agents this side of the Indian Ocean with the expectation of being able to get our car out of customs to begin our short trip down to the south of the country. On arrival we were greeted by a very efficient lady called Jannet who spelt out the situation in no uncertain terms - we were actually both impressed by her professionalism after our experiences on the other side of the water - and it turned out that the Indian side had not released the release papers to allow Jannet to process the papers for customs here in ... read more

The Majority of our time in Malaysia was spent watching the Formula 1 GP! Our initial tickets were not that good so we upgraded them for another 20 pounds (even though the ticket office staff there were useless - surprise, suprise!). the view was fantastic as we could see multiple corners and a bit of straight too. After the first few laps when all the cars of bunched together, there are then always cars coming round, the sound is defening! It was a fantastic experience, the atmosphere around the track was very good too, as there were people from all nationalities there! The hotel we stayed at in KL was next to a very vibrant area. It was very busy during the day and was always buzzing. We were next to the Times Square building which ... read more

After the ritual slamming of Thailand in my last entry I feel I should iterate that we went there at the wrong point of our trip and didn't plan our travels there particularly well. Would that we would have headed up North and got a bit more of a feel of the character of the place. It should also be noted that this was the first place we saw sharks and it will thus always have a very special place in our hearts. Anyway, I have resolved to write no more blog entries whilst hungover from taking a dram too many of the local 'whiskey' (a loose term that many of the countries we've visited seem to adopt for various brown liquids of high alcoholic volume). As of writing this, I'm mainlining The Orb ('Outlands') and ... read more

I am writing from Kuala Lumpur or better known as KL. I am towards the end of my one week trip here and tomorrow I head to Phnom Penh also known as PP to visit my cousin S and N and of course the Anghor Temples... I have loved my trip to Malaysia and especially KL. It is a lively city, well planned, clean, intersting, a great juxtoposition of old and new, east and west, religion and races...The KL skyline is quite impressive and in my opnion rivals that of some of the great US cities such as Chicago and New York. I highly suggest a short trip to Putrajaya, the govermental capitol of Malaysia. It is orderly, prestine, and has very impressive bridges and buildings. Also Melaka which was the old Malay capitol and is ... read more
