I heard a tap in my door early morning and it was Jeff, Hugo's friend who also works for Shell company but in Miri, he is giving me a lift. It was very nice of him to offer since he does not really know me, we just met on the day I arrived in Kuala Belait, Brunei at a cafe when we took lunch. He was on his push bike profusely sweating after a ride from Miri! I found out later this guy is an ironman participant, he looks very fit, this is his main hobby. Anyway in the car we had a very interesting conversation about life as an expat in Brunei(where his wife works) and at Miri, the perks of a Shell employee etc. etc. oh i get to learn how oil is processed ... read more

Off tonight! All packed and ready to go. Our first leg is to Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia. Our flight WAS scheduled to leave Stansted 11:20 tonight, due KL 8:30 tomorrow night local time. Got a text message from Air Asia last week: for 'operational reasons', the flight will now leave Stansted 4 am tomorrow! Now due in KL 1a.m Friday! Guess what - last train from the airport to the city is 1 a.m.; last bus to the city is 00:30 a.m. And the airport hotel is fully booked. So, we updated our plans, and booked a flight to Miri, in Sarawak near the Brunei border, for 7:25 am Friday. So depending on our actual arrival time, and immigration, we will have a few hours in the airport. Got a deal at the 5-star Marriot ... read more

... read more

Hello Stu and I are now officially jungle people...well as long as there's a well defined path and someone has swept for snakes before we arrive! On our last day in Kuching, we headed off to the Bako national park. It was a beautiful day and the hostel lady had assured us it wasn't going to rain. After the usual entertainment on the public bus, we had to take a short boat ride to the park. I was not amused to see the 'Beware of the Crocodiles' sign as I boarded the very small wobbly boat. When we arrived it was very much a scene out of The Beach. It felt like we had arrived at a tropical island all to ourselves. So off went along a pretty rough trail into the jungle. I was ... read more

Prologue With a couple of days to kill between Gold Coast & London (the el cheapo flight schedules didn’t work our way) we headed to Miri (in Sarawak, Borneo). When booking, we’d not a clue about the place. Later, we read up and came to the conclusion it was merely an ’industrial’ town servicing the oil industry. How wrong we were. As always, if you want to 'see' more detail in an accompanying picture, click it to enlarge. The Journey We left GC early and had a 4 hour layover @ KL before connecting to the Miri flight. We hopped onto the LCCT - KLIA shuttle and had a wander around KLIA, also enjoying aircon, a few beers and a meal. Eventually, after a longish day, we arrived into a pitch black Miri. Our Guest House ... read more

I arrived in Miri early, but it took ages to get to my hostel, due to the buses! I actually gave up on the last one and walked the 30 mins there in the baking heat. The hostel 'Dillenia' is lovely, really clean, lots of fresh fruit for breakfast and an extemely nice owner, who's full of helpful information. I can't believe how few travellers there are here though! I'm the only person in a 6 bed dorm. I went to Niah national park for the day with some Singaporean's on holiday. The caves are gorgeous, to get there you have to get a boat across the river, then walk through the jungle for 45mins. The caves are known for the swiftlets that live there, their nests are collected by the locals for birds nest soup. ... read more

Miri was our next destination after leaving Kuching. It was a 14hr bus journey to get there. A company was recommended to us by our taxi driver and the bus we would be taking was pointed out to us. Of course when it was time to get on the bus it wasn’t the same one, and you could say, a little less comfortable looking. We could only get two separate seats as it is the end of Ramadan here and all buses to Miri were full. When we got on though, the kind bus conductor arranged two seats for us together without us asking. It was at the front and I had no seat in front of me which meant I could stretch my legs to my hearts content. The 14hrs turned out to be long ... read more

Took a day trip to Brunei Darussalam today. The trip took about 3 hours by car to get to the capital city, Bandar Seri Begawan. Just outside of the city we stopped at the Empire Hotel and Country Club, one of the only 6 star hotels in the world. The place was unbelievable; marble and gold were everywhere and the bathrooms smelled nicer than any hotel room I've ever stayed in. If I make some money someday I may have to come back. The city of Bandar Seri Begawan is actually pretty small but there is a Mosque on just about every corner. We at lunch in a very modern mall (some Malaysian and Chinese food) and then headed off to see some of the sights around the city. Our first stop was a beautiful Mosque ... read more

First stop in Borneo Malaysia was in the "State" of Sarawak. I grouped this into one blog entry. Sarawak and Sabah Borneo (the two states) are nice because unlike the peninsula part of Malaysia, the rain forests here have not been destroyed. The first night in Sarawak we stayed in the town of Miri. Nice hostel. Day trip the next day out to the Niah caves, which are spectacular. This cave looked familiar to me, as I recall seeing in on t.v. when the Discovery Channel aired it's Planet Earth miniseries, caves episode. The smell of bat "guano" is very pungant. Kindof a sweet ammonia stench. The kind of smell that I will recognize forever...like a skunk! The cave is famous for having the largest mouth opening in the world. The cave was very deep, but ... read more

Day 297: Wednesday 22nd April - Another Day, another cave I’m feeling incredibly lethargic today. All these early mornings and long walks are catching up with me. I think about returning to bed and having an easy day, but decide against it and stick to my original plan for today, which is to visit Niah caves. The Niah Caves National Park is one of Sarawak’s smaller national parks, and is situated 100km from Miri. The park’s claim to fame is its role as one of the birthplaces of civilisation. The oldest modern human remains discovered in Southeast Asia were found in Niah, and were estimated to be 40,000 years old. Getting to Niah is the biggest headache about the visit. By public transport, two different buses are needed and then finally a taxi to take you ... read more
