Tres jolie. Nous avons pas ... read more

Flying from KL to Kuching again left us reeling at the cost of excess baggage on budget airlines (note to self: pack light next time!). We arrived to Kuching in Sarawak. Sarawak is our first state in Borneo (yes, a part of Malaysia) where we promptly received another stamp in our passport (semi autonomous at that!). Met two Dutch twins in the airport, Patty and Vivien, and shared a cab into town as the buses don't run until September 1st (we were 2 days too early). Checked into the Oriental Hotel before taking a stroll down the waterfront which was lovely. They call Kuching a "cosmopolitan city perched on the edge of Borneo". Well I'm not sure it lives up to that eloquent description but it is a nice city- when things are open. We happened ... read more

Right now it is the 8th of February and its nearly 8pm. You guys are probably eating lunch right now! I'm going to recount my intrepid trip day by day to bore you all to sleep and perhaps occaisionally make you a bit jealous? So I left off on the boat trip from Manukan back to KK... I had my afternoon all planned out at 1pm i caught my boat back to Kk then I was going to look through the seafront market, stop by a cash point to get out my local payment for the tour then have a shower ready to meet everyone and go out for dinner at 6:30, but I passed a HSBC before the market and I thought 'hey, we've got them at home it should work just fine' So I ... read more

It took changes of buses in Seria, site of Brunei's first oil find and hence of note in the country's modern history, and Kuala Belait to finally get us out of Brunei. The visa for Sarawak (i.e. Malaysia again) was different to the one we'd had for Sabah (i.e. the previous Malaysian province we'd been in), and another difference between the provinces was that our hotel room in Miri still had a pair of some previous occupant's underpants hanging in the bathroom, a state of affairs we hadn't encountered in Sabah. Miri was purely an overnighter for us, and we were lulled to sleep by the thumping music from a nearby bar that closed at precisely 2:03AM. Another wearisome bit of travel screwing-around occurred at the bus station the following morning when first we were sold ... read more

It was cheaper to fly from Malaysia than Singapore, so I needed to cross the border back to the Malaysian side in order to catch a flight to Borneo, my next destination and the third largest island in the world. I had been fascinated about Borneo ever since were read about it in the geography on the fourth class (aged 10). Why I had been so interested in the place I couldn’t remember, but it probably had something to do with the hard-to-reach rainforests, head-hunters, orang utangs and wild tigers. The island has been divided between three countries: Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. I decided to stay on the Malaysian side, mainly because I had heard that the Indonesian side is pretty similar to it and small Sultanate of Brunei is simply boring. In East Malaysia (i.e. ... read more

Sunday we got up & walked to the bus station to get the bus to the airport & got our flight to Miri, we got a bus into Miri & checked into a place listed in the Lonely Planet, it wasn't very nice but still we had air con & a TV! We went out for dinner & everywhere was closed, we managed to find a shopping mall where we grabbed some food in the supermarket & headed home to watch TV. On Monday, (after a terrible nights sleep), we went to the Visitors information Centre to find out about diving, trips to the National Parks, (Niah Caves & Lambir Hills) & buses to Brunei. We had a bit of a lie in so decided to spend Monday around Miri Centre; we walked to the ... read more

We landed in Miri at lunch time on Sunday and had to wait an hour for the local bus to take us into town. A short walk later and we were staying in a small room, with air con and satellite TV, although it wasn't the cleanest of rooms. We chilled out for a bit and watched some dodgy film with Harrison Ford in it before deciding to head out. Everywhere seemed deserted, whilst walking up a quiet street a dog jumped out at us, I grabbed Erica’s arm to pull her away, luckily it only wanted to bark at us but still caused us to panic. We carried on walking until we saw a MacDonald’s sign, thinking at least we were going to be able to eat this evening. We headed towards it and ... read more

After our night stay in Sibu we left earlyand traveled to Miri which took about 7 hours. Comfortably journey in big Air-Con coach with regular pit stops. When we arrived we travelled to Highland Guesthouse by taxi and the driver was a real character. We were chatting away to him when he asks "Do you believe the Americans landed on the Moon?" we were a little thrown by the random question. We discuss and then he gives us this A4 typed Report he wrote listing why it was a fake! Well it was funny at the time - maybe you had to be there. Spent the late afternoon frantically trying to organise our trip to Mulu - got it sorted and rewarded ourselves with a gorgeous Meal! We vowed we'd go back when we returned ... read more
