David, To answer your question; although it is the rainy season here the mosquito’s are not really a problem even on the jungle trek we did near Kuching and today near Miri. Most people wear shorts and have a quick spray of repellent and there a few incidents of problems (some isolated cases of Dengue fever) but no Malaria. Maybe being close to the sea (South China) shore helps. We (Jo, Dot & John) did a good trek before lunch today (just got back and girls are showering) up and around a place called Canada Hill which is within sight of Miri city but still surrounded by steep jungle clad slopes. This is the location of the original Oil well (called the Grand Old Lady today) and there is a drilling derrick and nodding donkey preserved ... read more

We headed up to Mulu National park in a bumpy little plane. ( bigs ups for Air Asia) Our first night was spent in a dinky little inn across the river from park head quaters. The generator shut off about 9pm and we were left in the dark and heat (bye bye fan). We then spent the rest of the night sweating under our mozzy nets. Lucky we had a booking the next few nights in the park dorm ( thank God!). Explored caves, trails and canopy walks with the amazing back drop of limestone and jungle. Came face to face with Bats, snakes, big snails and American tourists! Have a look......... read more

I have sent 17 snaps by Picassa tonight and will copy some snaps onto this blog. Jo cooked a fantastic meal; the red snapper was the star centree piece and was delicious. Richard and I will play 9 hole sof golf early tomorrow and then we all leave here at about 12.45 to fly from Miri to Kuching. I am not sure about the connection in the Hilton so you may not be bombarded with sights of us besprting ourselves in the tropics whilst you are in less pleasant climes. Love John & Dot... read more

I am seeing so much here, so many new sights and smells, i have realized how small new zealnd is andhow much we take for granted about our way of life. - so many people here are really poor, i mean to the bone poor. a wage here can be as little as 10 rgt a day that is about 5$ new zealdand. In the rural areas up around KOTA families live in small huts no power or running water, one family ... read more

After much deliberation the plan was hatched... Planned route in map form Organising the logistics of everything we leave behind has been more work than the trip planning itself!... Standing orders, finding a temporary home for the dogs, getting the KL flat sorted, selling stuff to finance the whole deal.... the list is endless. Now with the Gold Coast Marathon out of the way last weekend (4hrs 34.5mins) we only have a 1 track mind - no work and lots of planning and play! We have 7 days left in work, 2 weeks in KL and then we are off..... First stop will be Vancouver, Canada travelling with the ONE WORLD airline alliance.... read more

After taking an overnight bus from Kuching I arrived in Miri, a largish city/town next to the border with Brunei. The place itself seemed incredibly uninteresting to me but I didn't look around all that much so I'm perhaps not in the best position to comment on it. The only thing of any real interest that happened to me in Miri was that I stayed in a place called Tae Tong Lodging or something which was the cheaplest place reccommended by the tourist office nearby. I took one of the beds that is out in the reception hall (it was only for one night after all) and only two other beds were occupied. My two neighbours were both nuts, one was a fat indian bloke who spent a lot of time dribbling down his front and ... read more

Early start, bus to airport, small Focker 50 prop plane for short but scenic hop over the jungle to National Park. Walked in the canopy of the forest along high tree-top walkways. Walked to Lang Cave, amazing formations. Enormous Deer cave inhabited by bats. Stunning 'Garden of Eden' view at other end of cave. Back outside to watch the bats streaming out at dusk. Dinner back at camp. Me and Mark torment huge secada bugs flying round the lodge, and watched bats swooping in to eat them.... read more
