Tuesday, 21st May 2019 Breakfast was spot on as the eating place that we were planning to go was closed this morning. The Grab driver was kind enough to bring us to a private house instead which operated as a daytime eatery within the neighborhood. We probably tasted the best roasted Char Siew, Kolo Mee and Sarawak Laksa at this unassuming place. And it seemed that only the locals knew about this hidden gem. Sitting on top of Canada Hill overlooking the city is the Petroleum Museum which is a short ride away from our hotel. Next to it is the Grand Old Lady where the first oil well was drilled in Malaysia in August 1910. The near-empty indoor gallery contained a lot of information related to the Oil and Gas Industry which we took our ... read more

Monday, 20th May 2019 After breakfast this morning, we made our way to the Lambir Hills National Park about 30 minutes drive away. From the Park Ranger's Office, we headed to the waterfalls which sadly had been reduced to a trickle given the dry season. There were a few other trails with varying distances and difficulties which we could embark on as well. On our way back to Miri city, our driver made a detour at Tusan Beach where the famous cliff of the same name was located. This was the highlight of the day given the clear blue skies which certainly made every photographer dreams come true. The powdery sands on the near-empty beach made it seemed like a paradise which certainly surpassed all initial expectations of the place. Back at the city in the ... read more

Sunday, 19th May 2019 Miri have been one destination on my travel bucket list ever since I joined the Oil & Gas Industry some 12 years ago. However, it took me a good decade before stepping foot again to the state of Sarawak in East Malaysia. Handsome and I decided on this trip at the eleventh hour and we were glad that we still managed to score a great deal for a 4D3N vacation in this little oil town. Without a doubt, our stay at Pullman Miri Waterfront was one of the highlights where we were rewarded with fantastic views overlooking the coast of Miri. After checking-in and freshening up a bit in our spacious room, we had lunch at the nearby Nasi Lemak outlet located at the older part of the town. The tri-coloured milk ... read more

Saturday 5th May 2018 When the generator goes off at 1 a.m. so does the solar power, so no light, no fan, just heat! We couldn’t wait for the power to go back on at 7 a.m. so we at least had the little fan again! So, Saturday morning started off rather sweaty; nevertheless, we were eager to get going on our second Mulu day since the first had been so fantastic After breakfast at Kenny’s we got on a traditional longboat (with an outboard on back) from our garden jetty, to travel down river to more caves within the Gunung Mulu National Park. The longboats are the only form of transport here for the Penan; the Sungai Melinau is their highway. We felt snobbishly happy when we encountered a group of twelve tourists from the ... read more

From Brunei to Sarawak - Miri and the Niah Caves National Parks Ruth and I locate the Miri bus stop, grab a coffee and set off on our adventures again. We are sorry to miss the eclipse in the UK, but here it is the equinox with the sun directly above the equator at noon. We are about 4 degrees North. It is hot and our shadows are very short. The road from Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei, is a super motorway. It is green and leafy with flowers and manicured verges. There are no unsightly sprawling industrial suburbs in this direction. We pass several big stadiums and huge out of town malls and some large houses. The road cuts through maturing secondary rainforest for miles. There are no big lorries or container lorries, ... read more

This morning it was time to move on from Kuching and explore further into Borneo. Unfortunately the adventure was not as we expected. We were originally going to take the bus through the Malaysian province of Sarawalk to get to Brunei, but it was going to take 15 hours and we didn't really have the time to do that, so for $108 (for both of us) and the saving of a day of travelling, we flew on Air Asia to a town further down the coast of Borneo, called Miri. We were wanting to go from Miri to a place called Mulu National Park, which had some pretty cool caves and razor sharp rock formations that looked cool too. Unfortunately, we did not do enough planning in advance to realize that we couldn't do the park ... read more

After the brief sojourn to the Kelabit Highlands, I took the short flight back to Miri, and continued with another 2h bus ride to Batu Niah, the nearest town to the Niah National Park, yet another one of Malaysia' Unesco World Heritage Sites, and home to its famous multi-millenia-year old limestone caves. Of course Batu Niah isn't exactly right at the National Park's doorstep, and so it was a hot and humid 3km hike first to the park entrance, followed by another 3km to the caves proper. Apart from being notable and really quite impressive geological relics, these caves have also been home to millions (yes, millions) of swiftlets and bats for decades, if not centuries. Apparently there is some sort of implicit arrangement between the two species, where the bats inhabit the caves during the ... read more

And so from one oil-rich region to another. After just three quick days in the Bruneian sultanate, it was time to move on southwest-wards in my trip along Northern Borneo. So I bade farewell to Chiong and Sab, and took the 4h bus across the border to Miri in Sarawak, perhaps the more important of the two East Malaysian states. Larger, and endowed with even more natural resources than Sabah, Sarawak's political influence is evident even from the fact that it issues its own immigration entry stamps, distinct from the rest of the country. Such is the level of autonomy it enjoys. And situated at the northermost part of the state lies probably its next most important city after the capital of Kuching. Miri's proximity to Brunei suggests that (as already mentioned), it too has the ... read more

I only spent one day in Miri due to time constrictions with my travel plan, but upon my arrival I immediately wished I'd allowed a bit more time. My friend and I decided to hire a car and visit the Niah caves an hour outside of town. The caves are considered one of the great wonders of Sarawak and we felt it would be time well spent. We arrived at the caves around 1030am, got a map, and rented head torches for 5 MYR. It's about a 3.8 km hike through the rainforest to the caves. Luckily for us, my friend was a biology major when he was in uni so watching the small wildlife along the way was a lot of fun. He was always able to identify what we were looking at and what ... read more

This is going to be a one city blog, which is rather unusual for me. Actually this blog is not even going to be about this specific town, but all the photo's accompanying it will be. It will be more about how this became to be the blog it is. You see, this blog wasn't supposed to be what it will be, the reason it is, has partially to do with being stubborn, and partially to do with being a single traveller in Sarawak which can at times work against you. Let me explain. How comes it that I am sitting in Miri and writing this blog here, while my intention was to be in Gunung Mulu National Park, or perhaps the Kelabit Highlands, and my blog would have been in one way or another bound ... read more
