It is customary in Malaysia to refer to a place according to the distance it is located from a larger town. Sepilok is Malay for “14” meaning it is 14 miles out of Sandakan, Sabah’s 2nd city (which by the way seems to have a lot more character than KK...). Sepilok consists of a few private houses, some lodges and B&Bs, the rainforest discovery centre, a research station, a couple of shops and of course the orang-utan rehabilitation centre. We are staying at Sepilok Resthouse, a lovely wooden building next to the entrance to the centre. The surroundings are tranquil and picturesque and sitting on the balcony on our first evening, listening to the sounds of the jungle I felt very privileged to be here. The first few days were filled with lectures about the project, ... read more

About three years ago I watched a BBC documentary on a rehabilitation centre in Borneo for orangutans, called Sepilok. Today I finally visited. From Sandakan we caught a mini-bus with some other travellers to the rehab centre, in time for the 10am feeding. We walked down to the viewing balcony with the dozens of other tourists and watched as three gorgeous and bright orange orangutans had their breakfast on the feeding platforms out in the jungle, being keenly watched by not only the tourists but a whole swarm of hungry macaques waiting to scavenge after they'd finished. After they'd had their fill of fruit the orange bundles of fluff swung off back into the jungle together and every tree around us began to shake as the keen macaques of all sizes descended upon the platform to ... read more

Not had chance to update for a bit. We stayed at the forest retreat in Sepilok for two nights. It was nice and peaceful. We visited the Orangutan sanctuary and rainforest discovery centre on the first full day there. We had to wait on a platform for about 30 mins until the orangutans started to appear for feeding. Oh my it was bl**dy hot, we were dripping. It was really nice when they swung onto the platform and started eating the food the rangers put out. After this we had a walk through the rainforest to see if we could find any orangutans swinging through the trees but we only saw some monkeys. We then walked over to the rainforest discovery centre and walked over some canopies, did a little bit of bird and lizard spotting. ... read more

... read more

Once I lived through my horrible bus ride I arrived in Sandakan on the East coast of Sabah. My first stop was the Sepilok Organ Utan Center to see one of Borneo's most famous residents. They are incredible animals, very human like. The center mentioned that Orang Utans are actually 96.4% human and they are so fun to watch. There are about 20,000 Orang Utans left in the world and without conservation help from human they could be gone in the next 10 years. Basically, all of the rain forests are being cut down to create palm oil plantations so their natural habitat is being destroyed. The main issue is that the mothers get seperated from their babies and the orphans would normally die in the wild because they dont have the proper skills. At the ... read more

After the NP Kinabalu i went to Sepilok, Home of the Urang-Utans and Proboscis Monkeys. I checked-in in a very nice Lodge in the middle of a small Jungle. One big Dorm only for Mr. Hammer. The Jungle in and around the Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Centre, Rainforest Discovery Centre and Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary is very beautiful and the Monkeys steal your Cam when you don't have a look on it. I made some Jungle Treks around the Centres to have a look to the wildlife. The Nature here in Borneo is awesome. You must visit !! In Sepilok i met a very cool Couple from Canada. We do the River Cruise together. I guess that will be rock. Next Destination: Wildlife River Cruise Sungai Kinabatangan... read more

From downtown KK took the public bus to Wawasan bus station, 50 ringgit cents, then a van to Inanam station where the bus for Sandakan leaves. The bus is on it's way out and I just made it by a hair, 9am so i should be in Sepilok by 2pm. the bus ride was uneventful apart from an accident we passed along the road, a turned over car but everyone seems ok, am still thinking about the massive quake in Chile, i have so many friends living or travelling there at the moment, Chile is one of my favorite countries in Latin America and hopes the devastation is minimal. Anyway back on the bus, I was left off at the mile 14 roundabout, I was instructed by Paganakan Dii, the place I am staying to call ... read more

Sandakan is a busy town which is up there on the tourist map because of the nearby Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary which is just a few km's away. It's also quite close to the Sungai Kinabatangan which is where we made our way from by minibus. Generally we have found minibus travel in this state quite expensive so for anyone who is coming here do your best to steer clear of them wherever possible as they are around 5x more than regular buses. When we got to the city we scored highly on the accommodation front with a great room in Winho Lodge for just 50RM (£9) which was so nice we decided to stay a few more days to make the most of the great facilities! As well as the nearby attractions, Sandakan city has a ... read more

This is my 100th Blog entry!!! When we arrived at the bus station to go to Sandakan we were accosted by all the usual touts trying to get us to use their bus company. As we had already booked our they just left us alone straight away and picked on some other easy looking targets. We collected out tickets and realised we were on a not so comfortable bus and that there was a very comfortable looking bus leaving at the same time to the same place. You cant win here in Asia. Book in advance, you get the crappy bus, no ticket then you have to fight the touts off and then wonder who is telling the truth about where the bus is really going and how long it will take. When they say ... read more
