6am...Eddie's house...wake up, grab your bags and hit the road. We arrived at the train station at about 7:45, rush hour. Tried to pack on 2 different trains before we accepted the fact that all of us and all of our bags we not going to fit. We dashed back to the Eddie's car to drive directly to the bus station, the place the train was supposed to take us to. It is now 8:30 we are rushing to make a 10:30 flight at an airport that is an hour away. We get to the bus station in plenty of time. We Jumped on the first bus in line. We were told by the employee that it is leaving right now...we wait...and wait...and wait. minutes pass and it feels like an eternity. We are now pushing ... read more

Getting to Borneo has been quite the task... About a week ago we purchased three tickets on Air Asia for the rest of our Asia travels: A flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu in Borneo, a return flight from Kota Kinabalu to Kuala Lumpur and then a flight the same day from Kuala Lumpur to Bali, Indonesia. We had those three flights, so we have our itinerary set for the rest of Asia. We woke up early in the morning at Eddie's house in KL to catch our 10:20 flight to Borneo. We were at the train station by 7:15am to catch the 20 minute train to KL Sentral to catch the 1 hr bus to the airport. This should put us at the airport by 8:45am at the earliest and 9:15am at the latest ... read more

Hi peeps - you’re probably all very bored of us going on so we will keep this one short. After coming down the mountain we caught a bus to Sandakan where we stayed in and equally nice hotel as the suite - just not a big. But we did have a view out onto the sea which was nice, and ESPN again which matt really enjoyed (Marissa not so much). We had 2 nights there to rest our aching legs. We had planned to be moving on after that but due to the fact that Monday was diwali all the tour operators were closed, so that put us back a day. We had to move hotel because this one was a bit out of our price range. We followed lonely planets advice (thank you Caprice) and ... read more

Did you know the word 'Orangutan' means 'Man of the forest' in Malay? So after a whirlwind few days of brilliant diving and a spot of romance we packed our bags and set off back north to Sepilok, home of the Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. This is a place where rescued and orphaned Orangutans are brought to be looked after until they can be released back into the wild, in a sense they are semi wild here as they have the Sepilok surrounding Jungle to roam and are not restricted to certain areas. At visiting times the keepers put out some milk and banana's onto a platform a couple of times a day and if your lucky these amazing Ape's come swinging in for a feed and do some funny things. Nic - Apparently the keepers only ... read more

The Orang Utan rehabilitation centre is on the northern side of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo and is home to between 60 - 80 Orang Utans. Most of them have been rescued and then rehabilitated to life back in the Kebilli Sepilok reserve. We arived at the centre in the afternoon to view the great apes taking advantage of the milk and bannana subsidies they recieve while trying to adapt to there natural wild life. The viewing platform is about 300 metres in at the edge of the forest and is as far as tourists are allowed to venture. Surrounded by tall trees and various tropical plants the elevated platform allowed us to view the Orang utans from a safe distance and away from the nasty fire ants and leeches on the forest floor. The first animals ... read more

Kuala Lumpur. Heading for the Jungle. Sabah, Borneo 9th September 2008 The grey-haired-nomads are on the move once again. In search of new adventures, heading for Kuala Lumpur, a twelve hour flight from London Heathrow, en route to other places you have doubtless never heard of; Sabah, for example. Everyone can travel to Sabah these days. It's possible to organise an itinerary to include: internal flights (essential for 'getting around' as the few roads there are are mostly unmettled and potholed), river transport, dawn and night river safaris, lodges on the Kinabatangan River, elephant hunting, hiking up to your ears in mud and thorns, bats in caves and bird's nest soup, birding walks shared with hungry bloodsucking leeches and a host of other wildlife things to add to the excitement - with but an hour or ... read more

After a few hours on the bus, Ben, Dave and me arrived at the Sepilok Junction where the bus left us, so that we could get a taxi to get to one of the resorts near the Orangutan Centre. After going from one to the other not finding any cheap accommodation, we finally found a dorm for the 3 of us. From there we went straight to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre as at 3pm they have the feeding of the oranguntans, with a chance to see them (only if they hungry). After waiting for a while only one came to the feeding platform. It was amazing, they are such nice and funny animals, I think. They move so slowly and gracefuly around the trees. Did you know that we are genetically 96.5% similar to orangutans? Isn't ... read more

Ive just arrived back from my 3 day, 2 night stay in the jungles of sabah, and most of it which we entered was via the rivers of kalimantan. It was a long 3 hr drive to the point where we had to enter the river so we could get further into the forests. Then we took a boat which was the start of our jungle safari, where we saw many many monkeys, probiscus monkeys and long tailed macaques being the most common, did see some orangutans but miles into the distance within the trees so very out of site. It would have been really good to have had a decent camera, as with any wildlife phototaking i rarely got close enough to take a decent one. And with everyone else in the boat happy snapping ... read more

Hey all, just a quick note to let you know I'm still alive. I have just got back from the jungle so have found a place with internet access to write a quick note. Climbed Mt. Kinabalu on Mon/Tuesday - this experience was the toughest physical challenge I have ever faced, but I made it to the top! My legs are killing me and I experienced altitude sickness on the way down but I'm all good. We visited the poring hot springs and the Kinabangtan River (the second longest river in SEA) - saw lots of wild animals, pigmy elephants, wild hornbill, snakes, 3 WILD orangutan, macaw monkeys, probiscous monkeys, the list goes on. I have heaps of pics and when I get some time will put them up!! One more day of the tour then ... read more
