KK - Sandakan - Sepilok Asia » Malaysia » Borneo » Sabah » Sepilok By Sophia CApril 11th 2007Around the World Today we got a flight to Sandakan from KK. From here went to Sepilok which is where the Orangutan Santuary is. Even though we knew it was going to be touristy, I could not miss out on seeing them! Arrived in Sepilok just in time for the afternoon feeding. This is suppose to be quieter than the morning when they have over 100 people! There was about 40 of us which was fine as were able to get good view of the Orangutans. We then wandered off... read more

We stayed at the Sepilok Jungle Resort which really is a jungle resort. It was a stunning setting with wooden walkways through the trees to the accomodation past lakes and over bridges. There was so much to see there, loads of birds, butterflies, beautiful plants, big lizards, turtles and the noise they all made was incredible! The cafe was full of people swapping stories of their adventures so far in Borneo, people had been up mountains, through jungles and down to the depths of the sea! We didn't boast about how many James Bonds we had seen as we knew they'd all just be jealous. After an early night we were up bright and breezy for breakfast (eggs, would you believe?) and then off to the Sepilok Orang-Utan sanctury just along the road. It functions as ... read more

We got a public bus from the bus stop a couple of streets away from the hostel in KK to the north bus terminal & got a bigger bus from there at 9.30am to Sepilok, arriving at Sepilok Junction at 3.30pm. We got a minibus down the road to where we were staying, Sepilok Jungle Resort. It was set in the middle of the jungle in a beautiful location, surrounded by endless amounts of trees & some lakes, although there wasn't anything to see or do there apart from the Orangutan Sanctuary. We had dinner, a shower & an early night, (I hope everyone is seeing the pattern over my recent blogs, lots of early nights & not a lot of alcohol!) We got up at 8am, had breakfast & got to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation ... read more

We left Kota Kinabalu a little later than we had planned as we were not quite ready, so after a visit to the bakery we finally left. We arrived at Sepilok Jungle resort, which is a five minute walk from the Orang Utan Sanctuary, around 3pm. The resort was covers quite a lot of land and has several lakes and the are currently building a swimming pool. It is beautiful here but unfortunately other than visit the orangutans there is not a great deal to do here other than relax, so we spent the rest of the day chilling. We even had an alcohol free early night! On Monday we were up early to see the orangutans at feeding time. There must have been at least ten of them all together, of various ages, they ... read more

Tue 16th Jan Still raining hard the next morning we got a choppy boat ride back to the main land- somehow I managed to sleep. We then got taxis to the Orangutan rehabilitation centre. We went down to watch the first lot of Orangutangs at 11. Ofcourse it was raining but not to hard. There were lots of pigtailed maquaks trying to steal the pupmkin food. At the end the big male came and scared all the females away. Lots of films and photos taken. After lunch we watched a really good film about the rehabilitation programe and then went back to watch the second feeding. This time the male was there from the start and so the others never came down. It was funny when he had a bunch of bannanas in each hand and ... read more

Kat writes: After jigging along on a local bus for an hour we reach our destination Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre and it is so worth the journey. A centre, on the edge of protected jungle, where they rehabilitate orphaned Orangutan's with the aid of WWF UK. They teach them everything, even how to climb and then send them back out to the wild. Unfortunately the centre had just suffered a major blow- at the beginning of the month a monsoon totally destroyed their tourist viewing platforms. This is where Orangutans that they have released come back if they want to for food. Some can never fend for themselves and return everyday after their release and some they never see again! Despite the missing platforms people were still turning up, including us, so they opened up ... read more

Sorry about the lack of blogging but we've been having trouble finding internet places and any time on our tour to blog. We are now in Sepilok Orang-utan centre in Borneo, but more about that later if we have enough time. For now, this'll be another marathon. Happy reading! We left Kota Kinabalu for a long bus journey on Sunday. We met up with our tour the previous night, a group of sixteen in total and a leader called Wan. This part of the holiday is a 10 day tour organised by Guerba and Tropical adventures of Borneo. The journey started in a little bus to the Highland which had trouble ging up some of the hills. We saw some great landscapes and even a few glimpses of Mt. Kinabalu, which we were to climb on ... read more

Orangutan Sanctuary at Sepilok One learns a lot about people when watching orangutans. Especially some of the people I know. I spent this afternoon at the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre in north east Borneo, watching our cousins feed on bananas. They were all juveniles and aged: the rest were out hunting fruit in the forest and creating havoc in sugar cane plantations. At 3pm the local rangers bring out a few bunches of bananas and other assorted goodies to a viewing platform to bring the orangutans for us tourists to gawk at and for the orangutans to gawk at us silly tourists. The orangutans get better seats. About ten showed up - eight juveniles and two oldies - which is more than you would see in a week in the forest: orangutans are solitary animals, ... read more

My god what a long journey.we are staying at a hotel near the sanctuary which is gorgeous the room looking over beautiful gardens and a river, fish and turtles everywhere (cool) .then onto the sanctuary after lunch. Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre in the Malaysian Sabah District of North Borneo was founded in 1964, to rehabilitate orphan orang utans. The site is 43 sq km of protected land at the edge of Kabili Sepilok Forest Reserve. Today around 60 to 80 orang utans are living free in the reserve. When Sabah became an independent state in Malaysia in 1963, a Game Branch was created in the Forest Department for the conservation of wild animals in the region. Consequently, 43 sq km of protected land at the edge of Kabili Sepilok Forest Reserve was turned into a rehabilitation site ... read more

Early start today 5.30 am as we are going to start journey to emporia with an overnight stay in sepilok to stay at the urang-u-tan sanctuary. Barry from the hostel was the guide and a non English speaking Malaysian driver for the mini bus. the sights were amazing we just seemed to climb up and up into the banana plantations, the view was awesome with the early morning mist just floating below the mountains.2 hrs into the journey was a stop off for toilet in a small village called pekan nabalu, then breakfast in this small hut/café noodles and grilled fish. Good job I have a strong stomach to eat such a dish that early (it was delicious though). Off we were again for another 2 hrs and then we stopped at a market village in ... read more
