After a decent night's sleep, I came to terms with the fact that I will not enjoy a single hot shower on this trip. Honestly, it's so hot outside I should be thankful no hot water will come through the pipes. So this morning I forced myself into the dank tiled room. Have I mentioned that the shower is in the same small room as the toilet? Super convenient if you need to poo in the middle of your bathing. While pretending not to be mortified by the cigarette butt clogging the drain (along with hair, of course), I heard Brad yelp (for lack of a better word). He was quickly packing our things when I returned to the room. He informed me that we needed to leave immediately - he had just watched an unusually ... read more

Arriving in Malaysia The staff at our hotel in Singapore- the Fragrance Hotel Crystal -were so helpful in helping us find the best public transit to use, where to eat and what bus to take to Melaka - our first stop in Malaysia. We left on the 8:30 a.m. bus on Monday morning, April 27th, and travelled in luxury to Melaka. This was a regular long bus but just 6 rows with comfy seats which each stretched all the way out like a lazy boy chair….and excellent air cond. Crossing the borders for Singapore and Malaysia was very easy and efficient. We arrived in Melaka about 4 hours later. A lovely historic port city on the west coast of Malaysia and a perfect introduction to Malaysia. The taxi driver himself was a wonderful tour guide pointing ... read more

Date visited: 20-22nd April I was expecting another hectic and chaotic city but Melaka was a totally pleasant surprise in the end. Quiet, quaint and mainly traffic-free in the centre, this place had a relaxed feel. Our bus dropped us off in the central square next to the clock tower where a pedestrianised quarter awaited our feet to explore. TukTuk style bycycles meandered around the area loaded to the hilt with fresh colourful flowers - some so buried in flower heads it was hard to see the driver or the passengers! The church bell chimed in the background a few minutes later and more locals were beaming at us without us doing anything except walking and paying a polite glance. This whole scene was most welcoming and a great surprise. A mixture of themes' presented Melaka's ... read more

Following a delay to my flight from Sydney, I arrived in Singapore in the middle of the night. However, the only real setback was a hefty taxi fare to reach my hostel, where I soon located my school friends James and Chris, who would be my travelling companions for the next ten weeks. Since J&C had been in Singapore for over a week already I was quite happy to do a whirlwind tour of the city and move on. We spent the two days I had here wandering the city's various regions on foot. The heat and humidity proved draining, and we spent much of our time escaping to air-conditioned cafes to enjoy a glass of fresh juice or a milo ice. In Chinatown I picked up a new gadget for my camera - a front-loaded ... read more

1st - 4th April - Back to Kuala Lumpur followed by a short stop in Melaka Having said our sad goodbyes to the family after a great two weeks away we were on the bus from K.L airport heading back towards central to meet up with the guys. It was late evening by the time we finally arrived into Chinatown where the hostel was located. On arrival we met James who showed us to the room. We quickly threw our bags down and made our way out to meet Ross and Rick who were grabbing a bite to eat down the street. Then just as we were strolling down the steps from the hostel we were approached by 3 English lads who told us to hand over our wallets! A little shocked we ignored them and ... read more

Hello Group, After using the free internet on Saturday we headed up to the revolving restaurant in Penang to enjoy a congrats on making 2months dinner- the buffet was immense and there was no way we could've done it justice but it was worth it for the views alone. Although the obvious movement made us both a little bit dizzy. Sunday was a disappointing day as we became aware for the first time in weeks that it was the weekend with nothing open- restaurants, muesems everything appeared to be closed. We headed to fort cornwallis- unaware that is wasnt open so after taking some photos of the outside and closed gates we went for a wonder around the colonial district which had some beautiful buildings (including HSBC) and down to the marina which seemed to be the ... read more

Hello, its so hard to remember last weekend as this has been such an eventful week! We ended saturday by going to the revolving restaurant to celebrate two months of being away. We ate ALOT however, we both started to feel sick as I dont really like heights and it moved very quickly. Although we did get some great views of the city! Sunday was a boring day! EVERYTHING and I mean everything was closed! We attempt to visit the fort and museum, but it wa all closed. We had a late lunch at an Irish pub and attempted to watch a film but they were only showing Malaysian Films so that was a nono aswell! I have to admit we spent most of the day on the internet! However, we did manage to book bus ... read more

Well after sending the last blog Nick and I went up the Kuala Lumpur communications tower which gave us a 360 degree view of Kuala Lumpur. We left in time for the sunset which was good and looked beautiful going down behind the city. We stayed until it was dark so that we could get some good night pictures of Kuala Lumpur and the Petronas Towers. Unfortunately the view of the Petronas Towers was a bit disappointing as you could only really see one of them from where we were. We stayed up there for quite a while though as the view of the rest of the city was excellent. The next day we went to the Batu caves where the Thaipusam festival is held every year. The caves were big and we had to climb ... read more

This is Hannes writing. As said in the last entry Erik and I split up last Sunday. He went toward Pulau Tioman, apparently getting stuck in Mersing for a night when missing the ferry by 5 minutes, and I headed for Port Dickson. As might be noticed by the attentive, this entry is written in Melaka, the place we started from. After starting the Sunday of split-up with a mediocre breakfast at McDonald's we both went to Melaka Sentral. We were a little worried when we were told it was Chinese Spring and neither of us could get tickets at the first try. Both were, however, successful at the second and subsequently parted ways to our separate buses. I arrived a little more than one hour later at Seremban were the connecting bus to Port Dickson ... read more
