We arrived to the Tioman Islands and Air Batang a small village about halfway up the island. Headed straight for My Friends Place and checked into our Bungalow-home for the next 3 days. We quickly sunk back in the vegetative mode that comes with living on an island for any amount of time. We met our neighbours from the UK and spent the day chatting, napping and relaxing. Our time on the Tioman islands went quickly and was a mixture of taking dips in the ocean, reading our latest books and checking out the town of Air Batang (which is basically a few guesthouses, shops and a single- deathly slow- computer connected by a sidewalk). After 3 short days we headed back to the mainland by ferry before catching our bus to Melaka. The journey took ... read more

So, on Wednesday we journeyed to Malaysia. It was a very nice coach - comfortable air-con journey! As soon as we crossed the boarder there were cows and goats just rocking about at the side of the road! When we arrived in Melaka the heat was intense! Less humid than Singapore but it felt hotter. We got on a local bus to take us into town. It was a total rattletrap and was packed full - we had backpacks on knees. Made for one sweaty journey! Arriving in the town square we realised Malaysia was going to be totally different to Singapore! Now we really felt like we were abroad! There were taxi/trishaw drivers everywhere shouting at us trying to get our business and monks too! Although they didn't shout. Melaka was a real preserved historical ... read more

Hey People, Us Again!! After the beautiful Angkor Wat, our next destination was Malaysia, starting with its Striking, Modern capital, Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur After sleepy, relaxed Cambodia Kuala Lumpur (KL) proved to be a major gear change for us, modern buildings, public transport you could set your watch to and restaurants catering to anything you could wish for. Although perhaps KL offers a less cultural eperience than some of the other places we have visited so far, it proved to be one of the easiest places in which to spend time. We greatly enjoyed our 4 days here (1 of which was spent queueing to get our Indonesian visas for later in our trip...fun!!) We wondered around the different areas of the city such as China Town, Little India and the golden triangle, all of ... read more

My time in Malacca picked up a bit-was a bit dreary after having seen so many museums. Next day I walked around Chinatown and wandered into a temple with Taoist, Confucionist and Buddhist shrines. I started chatting with the man at the desk about religion and he quizzed me on my Buddhism and since I scored 80-90% correct I walked away with not one but two books on Buddhism! He said one of them is really hard to get outside of Asia. I wandered back to the hostel not knowing what a colorful crowd we'd have there that night: the owners and 2 British brothers who've been there awhile, 2 trishaw drivers one of whom has the most beautiful trishaw in all of Melacca, a street vendor who sells atop the hill without a license, and ... read more

I arrived to Malacca yesterday at 5am after leaving the Perhentians at noon the day before. I had breakfast at a Chinese market since they were the only ones awake and hung out til 730ish. I made my way to the hostel I hoped to get and a couple was leaving as I arrived. They said to go on in and knock on the door where the owners were sleeping. I knocked. No answer. Knocked again louder this time and a European woman in her 50s came blustering out and was clearly irritated to be awaken. She yelled at me that they had no rooms and how dare I knock on her door and why couldn't I wait outside like normal people. I apologized, said I'd had a long trip and went outside with teary eyes. ... read more

Having checked the bus situation the day before we were in no rush to leave Kuala Lumpur. Checking out at 11.30 and slowly making our way to the Pudaraya bus station we sat down for a large breakfast before hopping onto one of the hourly buses to Melaka. We arrived after only a few hours on the bus and headed straight for the old town to find a hotel. In the afternoon we enjoyed our favorite pastime, wandering around. Feeling that Melaka didn't hold enough interest for two days of exploring we opted to leave for Singapore the next day. In the evening we walked around a great night market and ate some tasty food and then retired to a bar to settle in for an evening of drinking with quite a few buckets of beer ... read more

Wow.....it's been a while and Net life has been tricky. Apologises for lack of communication. However I have been having a ball and all is great in my World. So Ubud....lovely place, I planned to go back but well ran out of time. A 30 day visa on arrival is not long enough for Bali let alone Indonesia, which is huge. Any way Cheryl and I decided to head to the Gili Islands together, as we were getting on so well. We got a mini bus to the ferry and had decided to go by the smaller boat rather than the main ferry, quicker We thought.....how very wrong. The journey should take 4 to 5 hours, we were on the boat for 8!!! We were sat on the floor in this sand pit....well dusty dirt pit ... read more

Deretter var byen sete for ... read more

Tuesday June 17, 2008 - My new friend Andy got a ticket on the same bus to Malaka- it was mostly empty - and we headed off. I spent those two hours hoping all the sweat on both sides of my shirt was drying and he looked at the scenery as we chatted. We had to take a local bus for 10 min into town after we arrived, and then we set out to find one of two hostels we liked the sound of. We finally got ourselves to the first one and it was full already. Then we spent about 30 hot minutes wandering around trying to find the other. Turns out we had passed it at least once, and come close several times. But we got settled in with no problem. We got a ... read more

Traveled by local bus 4hours north, stopped off at the best road side stop. We stayed in China Town and found this had the best vibe of all of Melaka. From here we decided to go to Paula Basir which was described as a romantic island, white sands and clear beaches(lonely planet and accommodation).....after another local bus ride we hit the jetty. Rich called ahead to book for 3 nights...lets just say we had a lucky escape... we managed to get the last boat back from the island to find two more people waiting to cross...luckily we warned them..it turned out to be a sacred deeply religious Islamic place (thanks to a guy who had traveled 7 hours from Singapore with his family kindly explained this to us...so they let us go after many questions about ... read more
