hi everyone We left Tha Kek and headed in the pouring rain for our home stay at Ke Champhong. So it was another long boring journey on our bus, passing miles and miles of paid fields and villages which all start to look the same after a while lol We first needed to get lunch as there is only one restaurant on the way and previous experience has taught stray that the service was slow. We stopped off at a local street vendor for a baguette but her choice of fillings did not float my boat so Paddy and I headed over the road to the restaurant we had tea at the evening before. We paid moe and had to wait longer for a lovely club sandwich and chips lol. So back on board the bus ... read more

I enjoyed my stay in Laos. From its dense jungle to its breathtaking waterfalls. I spent a lot of time exploring central and southern Laos. Next time I will take more time to explore the northern area. Although, Laotian culture shared many similarities with its neighbors, it also has its own distinctive flavor. Laotians are very laid back. It can be difficult to find Laotians losing their cool. I did not expect to see so much Vietnamese living there. I thought I was still in Vietnam. Throughout my time in Laos, I developed a love for sticky rice. Sticky rice is the foundation of the Laotian diet. Often eaten with your hands, sticky rice goes well with everything. My favorite dish to eat with sticky rice is Larb, mince meat with various herbs and fish ... read more

BONNE ANNEE 2014 !!! On devait sûrement ... read more

Our last morning in Champasak, we lazed around by the river, and managed to research our upcoming travels, before our boat came. Surprisingly, it was only the tow of us, but they neither tried to charge us extra or persuade us that it was not going. We simply sat there, on a large, lovely boat (with actual wicker chairs!) and watched the scenery. The trip was just over two hours, and we were in Pakse before dark. Now that is a day's travelling we could get used to... We were originaly going to be in Pakse between Xmas and New Year's, so we had booked a place to stay when everything was full, and ended up with the scraps. We had, however, changed our dates since, so we ended up with the scraps when everything else ... read more

Cestou sme nakladali a vykladali ludi. Do Ubonratchani sme dorazili o 7/00. Konecne sa ide do ... read more

Hello Laos! And all it took was a 3h bus ride, half of it from Ubon to the Chong Mek-Vang Tao border, and the other half to Pakse, a relatively prosperous Laotian city located at the confluence of the Mekong and Se Don rivers in the Champasak province in Central Laos, and often used by tourists as a staging point to nearby attractions. The Laotian immigration counter at Vang Tao was something else. Not the typical counter where the immigration officer sits behind a desk and sizes you up before deciding to issue you a visa, this was more like a tourist attraction ticket counter where you can only peek at the immigration officer through a small opening at the bottom of the panel of heavily-tinted glass. I'm not sure if the officer can see the ... read more

I got the boat back from Don Det with another French person! What is it will all the French travelling?! After the boat, we took a mini can and arrived into Pakse at around 2pm. I had no idea where we'd been dropped off but with my new found navigational skills I got myself, the French girl and a lad from Belgium to the guesthouse, sabaidy 2. I'm back in the dorm there. We went for lunch to the Bolevan Cafe which was great, even better if you are a coffee lover!! I have finally taken my laundry in and it should be ready tomorrow morning so I'll have some nice clean clothes to wear! I'm booking the sleeper bus to Vientiane for Thursday. It will be my first sleeper bus so more of an experience ... read more

After leaving the Kong Lo cave we started what turned out to be the journey from hell (what else can be expected when travelling during the country's most important holiday). With the help of a local who spoke English we thought that the owner of the Eco Lodge in Kong Lo village had ordered us a minivan to take us to the street from where we could catch a local bus giong to Paske. It turned out that he hadn't and we had to take two of these truck style local busses to take us to that road. Each bus took more than one hour and was packed to the rim with locals, luggage, animals (3 puppies in a tiny crate with no food or water - horrible) and sacks of onions and other veggies. Just ... read more

We were picked up early in the morning by our guide for the day, Coh, and his driver, Ding, for a day of treking. The trek started in a local coffee plantation. Most of the coffee is of the Robusta variety and according to Coh has played a vital part in the recuperation for the local people from absolute poverty. Laos was until recently one of the 20 poorest countries. Wandering through a small village nested in the coffee plantation, we noticed a local farmer washing a pair of denim jeans using just a brush, some washing powder and a couple of large buckets (a similar style to that we saw in Cambodia). Coh informed us that this is still the common way Laos people wash their clothes. With Coh translating for us, we showed the ... read more
