MORE PHOTOS HERE In Luang Nam Tha, I check in Zuela, a lovely wood and brick guest house, probably the cleanest and nicest place I've stayed in so far in the region, if not the cheapest. In the lobby, I meet Jackie, an outgoing Aussie who came here for the same reason as me, trekking, and is looking for companions to bring the cost down. We both sign up for a 2-day trek that will take us through the jungle to an Akha tribe village, where we will spend the night. The Green Discovery staff warns us about the conditions of the path, which is expected to be muddy (no shit?!) and difficult--but if we are exhausted on the second day, there is a shortcut back home... In the end, we were very lucky with the ... read more

On the 18th I felt like the Queen until I got to our guesthouse.... We left Vieng Xai to drive to Vieng Thong. We did not really want to stay in Vieng Thong, but it was too far to drive to Nong Khiaw in one day. When driving through the small villages the children were shouting Sa-bai-di (hello) and waved at us, so with one hand steering the bike and the other one waving back like the Queen. It is obviously not often that they see tourist on motorcycles in the far Northern part and it put a smile on the children’s faces when we waved back. The guesthouse is the worst I have stayed in so far. There was no shower apart from a bucket of dirty water; the toilet was a hole in the ... read more

Laos Vientiane October 16th So I've turned the corner into the final leg of my trip. I'm past the half way point and after an eventful night of sleeping at the airport I'm finally in Laos. No more flights until my big one home. No more needing to be somewhere by a certain date. All I have to do is get from A to B. While waiting for my plane to leave KL I starting talking with a Aussie guy who was also heading to Laos. He had been here before and gave the stories he told just built up my excitement even more. We were both only spending the day in Vientiane (Laos' capital city) and then moving in the same direction so we decided to head along our route together when things line up ... read more

A VERY Long way To Go Nong Khiaw is miles from anywhere. Well, not so much miles, as hours. What is the difference we hear you cry? Well....we are sure the helpful distance marker showed it was less than 250kms from Xam Nua to Nong Khiaw, a mere 4 hours journey on any normal road, but this was no ordinary road. It was sealed in parts and in others had a very hard concrete kind of surface. In other areas it was just dirt. Strangely the sealed parts were worse than the dirt because they had big holes all over them. And of course there was the other minor factor. A mountain range. Now this might not be the Himalayas, but it was high enough to have Tracey's ears popping left right and centre as we ... read more

How can I describe the beauty of Muang Ngoi Neua. To reach this beautiful village in the western region of Laos you have to take a bus from Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw and from there the journey is completed by longtail boat. In fine contrast to the road trip to Nong Khiaw, which was completely uninspiring the boat journey on the other hand was remarkable. Not even my lethargy or the fear of rats was enough to dampen the experience. Travelling up the Nam Ou river you become lost in the beauty of the place. While the river itself is uninspiring it is the great scene around that captures you. Huge mountains appear to rise from the river itself and the trees that carpet it from top to bottom appear to defy gravity as they ... read more
