I'm in the Japanese capital now and so far I like it very much. Everything is really clean and tidy, the people are genuinely friendly and helpful, and the service is pretty good almost everywhere (and you don't need to tip people to get good service, tipping is not even customary in Japan). Some things are a bit strange though to me as a westener, like most streets don't have any names so it can get tricky to find your way around from time to time. The food is of course also a bit different from what I am used to. I decided to have lunch in a Japanese restaurant today (I'm not going to eat western food when in Japan) so I entered a restaurant and pointed at a picture in the menu, most of ... read more

So I have made it to Japan and had an absolutely fantastic flight with All Nippon Airways (ANA) in First class, I cannot praise the airline enough. Both the food and service were absolutely top-notch, I have never seen so much food on offer onboard a plane, it was really a la carte service up in the air! I left Dallas Sunday evening on the last evening flight to Los Angeles, due to two hours time difference I arrived in L.A only one hour later. I stayed one night in a hotel at the airport (Four Points by Sheraton) which was very convenient. Nothing remarkable about the hotel but they had a nice fitness centre. On Monday morning around 10 am I caught the free hotel shuttle from the hotel to the terminals. All Nippon Airways ... read more

I am in Japan!!! A long way from Adelaide, Australia, but here I am in Shizuoka for a year teaching at an English Kindergarten while seeing and experiencing as much of this crazy, mixed up, amazing country as I can! Tokyo- big, bustling and busy, but really not my cup of tea (me being the sheltered, quiet country girl that I am), it does however have one redeeming feature. Ok, so there is Disneyland, but its not actually in Tokyo and so therefore does not count. No, the one thing I LOVE about Tokyo is the Harajuku and Yoyogi Park area. When Mum and Dad and Gran were here we went to Harajuku to check out the crazies (Ive been here a few times- its great!!) and then we strolled around the corner and stumbled on ... read more

On Sunday we spent the whole day traveling - taking the train to the airport, a plane to Incheon airport, a bus into Seoul, a train back to Daejon and a taxi back to our apartment. We were very happy we had seen Japan, but also happy to be back. The best part of the day was when we flew over Mt. Fuji, so Steve got a chance to see it after all.... read more

After a restful sleep in (traveling takes its toll) we headed out to see some of the sights in Tokyo. We started by the imperial palace which was ok, but not that exciting after Himeji castle. We had lunch in a nice square by a fountain. We also explored the East gardens which were nice and peaceful and made for a lovely walk. After another ice cream break (they love their soft serve vanilla, and so do I) we headed for the Yasukuni-jinja shrine - a shrine dedicated to the war dead of Japan. The shrine was nice enough, but the real attraction for us was the war museum next to the shrine. Steve got really excited when we walked in and there in the entrance was a WWII “zero” plane, a Japanese fighter plane (don’t ... read more

We caught a train early to get back to Nagoya, and another to go to Tokyo. We spent most of the day on the train. We took a slower train so we could get out at Fuji and have a nice view of Mt. Fugi, but when we arrive it was so foggy you couldn’t see the mountain at all, so we decided not to get out. Tokyo was harder to navigate than Kyoto or other tourist spots because there seemed to be very little English on signs, and the public transit system took awhile to figure out. They have a huge subway system as well as a local train system. Since Tokyo is so large, it was hard to find someone who could tell us how to get to our hotel, so after several wrong ... read more

Well, it is less than 30 days now until we leave for / arrive in Japan (November 2nd). It still seems so far off until I think about everything that needs to be done before we go. I have officially left my job and am now unemployed. For the first time in my life I am a totally dependent wife! I definitely have mixed feelings about that. I always wanted to be able to stay at home and not work, and now that I can, it feels strange being totally dependent on someone else. Last week was Marc’s last business trip to DC. Months ago, before we even thought of moving to Japan, we had planned to be up in DC to see some friends this past weekend and coincidentally it turned out to be the ... read more

I have finally got this blog set up ..... well, here I am back in Japan and it's great! I am living in Sagamihara city which is in Kanagawa, Greater Tokyo but TravelBlog doesnt give this as an option. Anyway, it IS beside Machida city. Machida city is cool by the way as it has a five floor 100 yen shop (about 50p)! AND a TGI Fridays! I had to travel 40 minutes to get to Tony Romas from my last place. Sagamihara is not a very interesting place. Population is over 600,000. It is about 40 km from the centre of Tokyo. I haven't found out what Sagamihara is famous for although Camp Zama, a US Army post is located here and in the next city Zama. So that might be it. It has about ... read more

Coming from China, Japan was like this perfect world where everything operates as it should and when it should. It's a clean, orderly, safe and immensely polite society and was delighful to travel around. Our 2 week stint began in Tokyo. What amazed us initially were: 1. the cleanliness of the streets (eventho bins were few and far between) - you could eat off them!! 2. the high fashion - everyone is well turned out, tho we did see one naked man stretched out in the Ginza area!! 3. had somehow thought japanese people were on average quite small - they're not!! Tokyo doesnt have any really major sights but it has numerous different areas, each interesting in its own way. We were staying in Asakusa at Sakura hostel which was convenient to the metro, had ... read more
