Cheguei no Japão, que sensação boa... Tudo limpo, bonito... Mandei minha mala por TakyuBin e fui de trem para casa da minha prima. O marido dela estava me esperando na estação. Esperamos ela chegar, jantamos juntos e ficamos conversando...

Went to Yokohama yesterday and had a mooch about - went to the port, Chinatown, saw the stadium (was going to go to a baseball game but wasn't one on!), went to an amusement park and happened to stumble across an H&M!!! Did our usual bit of getting lost and me being crap at reading maps but that's all part of the fun I guess! Today we went to Hakone. This was lovely - a lake, mountains, hot springs and a view of Mt Fuji (although I think it was just clouds we were looking at to be honest!). Whilst on this we passed some school kids on a trip and one said 'hello' and so we said hello back and all the other kids got excited and we had to say hello and wave to ... read more

17thMarch – Yokohama Our arrival into Yokohama was pretty spectacular; we had time it right at low tide for the ship to pass under the bridge. We had 6 feet to spare and at 11.30 at night it looked even closer. After the late night, we were ready for our trip to Tokyo. Yokohama is about 18 miles from Tokyo and lies on the Pacific coast of Honshu, the largest Japanese island. The tour was Tokyo Highlights with Japanese lunch. The traffic is something else (I’ll never maon about the traffic in the UK) Into downtown Tokyo for the first temple of the day with its accompanying Shinto shrine. The Senso-ji features a small gold statue of the Goddess of Mercy, two great gates and shops known as Nakamise – shopping was partaken of!!! Onto a ... read more

As it's nearing the Christmas holidays and I am pretty sure only my family regularly reads this travel blog, I thought I would take just a little while to talk about Japan, life, and not seeing my family back home during this X-mas season. :) Life in Japan is both different and also just life - just living, day to day, and creating relationships and memories and enjoying every day. I am sad that I won't be able to see my family in America for Christmas, and I miss them dearly, but it was simply too expensive to go home again (with a ticket hitting nearly $1500). And since there is no current answer in sight for "when will you come home for good?" which is a question that I hear often but wish I didn't ... read more

Way back in August,1990, I went to Japan. Landed at Narita and went to Yokohama by a bus. And my stay at Yokohama is still fresh in my memory. When we flew over Hiroshima and Nagasaki myself and my fellow companion in the plane stood to pay tributes to its victims. I also attended INTECOL, 1990 at Yokohama Prince Hotel. Its majestic view enabled me to see Yokohama Harbour, which looked especially wonderful in night. I also had a chance to call on a very senior scientist Prof MS Swaminathan with whom I sat for some time at Yokohama Prince Hotel. I also visited a monastery close to Tokyo. Its architecture was good and I especially liked its old walls with moss and algae!.The time sense and work culture of Japan touched my soul. I will ... read more

It's been awhile since I updated! It's nearly my birthday, which means I've gotten TWO wonderful birthday packages in the mail that contained FOOD. This is excellent for me, since I am still working off my "you have no money, please be a hobo" lifestyle. I now do not have to buy groceries for several weeks, which is by far the greatest thing that ever could have come via the mail, haha. I finally got a Japanese bank account set up. It was an arduous process, and one that I do not ever wish to repeat, made more difficult by the Japanese insistence that I have a phone number - I do not have a cell phone yet, because THAT IS EXPENSIVE, YO. I don't have the money yet to get one, because I haven't gotten ... read more

Ah, what a morning! Today was the day that I was completely and totally out of cash. As said earlier, this country runs on cash, so this was a problem for me, particularly because I pick up my alien residence card tomorrow but can't get there unless I have more cash to throw on my train card. So, I set out today thinking it would be easy to find an ATM to give me cash from my American account. Turns out? Not so much. I was told that 7-11 ATM's would work, but the one I went to rejected my card saying that it couldn't read it. I was like uh-oooooooooooooh, so I went to the bank figuring well, I need to make a bank account anyway, so let's try this. They wouldn't let me get ... read more

This past Monday I decided to take the train to Kamakura to check out the surf breaks along the beach. The waves tend to be on the small side unless they score some swell from a typhoon, much like the U.S. east coast and hurricane season. It was a calm, slightly drizzly day, but there were a few spots breaking in the ankle to knee range, surfable, but I imagine fun really only on a longboard, which is fine by me. I began my beach walk at Shichirigahama station where I stopped in any surf shop I came across to inquire on board rental fees. It was amusing to see that much of the retail items such as t-shirts in the shops had surf spots in California printed all over them. I saw more English in ... read more

Recently I went to Yokohama with a few of my friends. We checked out the Chinatown in the area and Sakura-gicho. Beware of the cars navigating their way through the streets, I almost got hit on a few occasions. You can find tasty, cheap Chinese food and a whole bunch of panda products. Its basically a panda lovers paradise. We also checked out Yamashita park, which has a few large ships nearby. The area was famous for be a trading port with westerners. Walking around downtown Yokohama is amazing, there is a mixture of western architecture with a little bit of Japanese. At times I felt like I was back in America, walking around the downtown area of a large city. The last part of Yokohama that we went to was Sakura-gicho. Sakura-gicho, has a small ... read more
