Yokahama Arrive around 3pm. The hotel was 5 mins walk from the station. We passed the tallest observatory landmark tower going to the hotel. We checked in then decided to walk around the wharf area using a route map that Tom had got from the station. Very hot day, we didn't manage to see all of the wharf, but the views of the harbour we really good. We also came across a couple having wedding photos taken on the wharf. There were various shops and other land marks. Returning to the hotel we had a quick shower and met the others for the walk to Japan's biggest China town. On the way we saw a boxing match going on inside a building and a lovely Chinese temple. The meal was suppose to be a all ... read more

Sasebo was quaint, quiet and comforting. Okinawa was pretty much a non-event (as I didn't leave the ship and was only there for 6 hours). Yokosuka was the next challenge. I'd heard so much about it, from the countryside to Yokohama to Tokyo, but it still wasn't what I expected at all. I guess I had some huge metropolitan base in mind, but Yokosuka Naval Base is teeny! I mean, it's probably about the size of North Island, if not a little smaller. There aren't very many ships there either, U.S. Navy ones anyway. Of course there's the Blue Ridge (a flagship) and a bunch of small boys, but the George Washington wasn't in and that seemed to make all the difference in the number of personnel on the base. We moored at the carrier pier ... read more

CS: Sunday 1st February 2009. We finally eased out of Masan on Saturday evening about 4pm. The weather had been pleasant all day allowing the last of the loading, including two huge pipe devices on the deck as well as much loose equipment stowed below the deck sheets, and of course more of the ubiquitous pipes that come in all sizes, lengths and colours and which we seem to collect and dispatch from port to port. Leaving Masan was welcome given that the two lots of unexpected delays (Chinese New Year holiday and bad weather thereafter) kept us there for nearly 10 days but given those delays it had been a most enjoyable spot to be in. We had taken advantage of a wonderfully sunny day on Friday to walk the other half of the town ... read more

The nearest city close to Tokyo is the harbor town Yokohama. It is just 20 minutes by train and actually there is no real border or less populated area. It is a constant sea of houses, apartment blocks and shops. Yokohama is often controversy discussed as second living place to Tokyo with more open space and a long water front with a pleasant promenade walk. But it is less trendy and sleepier than Tokyo and there are many pros and cons to live here. We got of at Yokohama train station and wandered along the harbor line passing through shops and admiring the skyline view against the blue bright sky. This weekend an international art festival was on with several spots offering public art. One was a pavilion made out of flexible white plastic rings offering ... read more

That's pretty much all there is to this post. Samia & I checked out the World Porters Market (& I got a meat bun...finally!). The girls were good conference attendees. Was feeling a bit iffy, but I had a list of to-do so I decided to charge onward...and then, my camera died. :( I came back to the room to charge it and boom! down I went w/a crazy migraine. Haven't gotten one on vacation for a long while...maybe a symptom of jetlag? Otherwise, I'm feeling pretty good. Anyways, came back to the room for a nice long afternoon nap and woke quite refreshed. The girls came back and we hung out in the room for awhile...they took naps & I watched Japanese tv...which I love! Seriously, I only understand like every fifth word, but it ... read more

I wake up with a dull thudding noise in my head, a sick feeling to my stomach and a throat drier than the Sahara. I slowly, painfully open one eye and close it again quickly. This isn't my flat. I experience 33 seconds of panic before I remember where I am: Phoebes house in Yokohama. I'm safe. Relieved, I take in a deep breath and nearly choke on the noxious smell of smoke hanging like a fug around my head, clinging to my hair, which is currently plastered attractively across my face in the manner of a Bon Jovi groupie circa 1988. The night is coming back to me in small, hazy flashes. flash! Tequila shots flash! Having a dance off with the man with the afro flash! sharing a table with the stange clad in ... read more

It's the start of the fireworks festival in Japan! Sugoy ne? From mid July till the end of August Japan completely goes mad for celebrating natsu (summer) with huge fireworks festivals happening all over Japan every weekend, and loads of weeknights. A lot of people prefer to go to Hanabi festivals dressed in traditonal yukata (a kind of light weight summer kimino) but as the first of the festivals was happening at the beach Sanae and I decided to leave the yukatas at home and patriotically wear a more traditional Australian costume. So kitted out in denim skirts, singlet tops and thongs we headed through Tokyo to the Yokohama prefecture beyond. When we arrived there were thousands of people milling through the stalls, munching on calamari, tayokyaki and sausages the size of a baseball bat, getting ... read more

I have always liked visiting the different Chinatowns throughout the world. There is something about them that interests me and whether I am in Bangkok, London, New York or Yokohama, the local Chinatown is always on the top of my list of places to visit. I like the markets, the food, the crowds of people, and the lively atmosphere that these small districts always tend to contain. And Yokohama was no different. It may have been a bit over polished and pricey, in that normal Japanese way, but it was distinctive, it held an identity of its own. I spent a great couple of days there while attending a conference with my friend Nick. We shacked up on the outskirts of Chinatown and spent the days attending a conference and the nights eating and drinking our ... read more
