The next day after coming back from Noashima, we decided to catch a Ferry across to Kobe as the ferry's from Takamatsu were much cheaper than any of the trains. With some time to kill in the morning, we first decided to check out Takamatsu's garden. I'm really glad we did as it has been my favourite garden so far. It was a lot bigger at more open than any other garden I've been to, and there are beautiful bridges and mountain backdrops. There are also masses of fish in the garden ponds who will swim up to you hoping for food. Not the best survial technique in the wild, but the kids love them. Anyway, for those who know of my legendary sea sickness I actually handled the four hour ferry pretty well. The ferry ... read more

Hello everyone, Sunday was my day off and sticking to my plan o doing something new and interesting on my days off I decided to check out the onsens in Arima, which is about a 40 minute train ride from Kobe. Many of my students had told me that Arima is famous for its great hot springs and onsens, which are a huge part of Japanese culture. I knew instantly when I boarded the local train bound for the onsen that I was about to have an authentic Japanese experience as the entire train was full of Japanese people, of all ages, anxious to make their way to othe onsens for a day of relaxation. Not really knowing exactly where I was going after getting off the train I simply followed the crowd and eventually I ... read more

A lot has happened in the past week! Last Saturday I took the bullet train to Okayama to supply teach for the day. Riding the bullet train was a great experience, it goes so quickly that you can´t evenappreciate the view out the window because you are moving so fast. ECC´s school in Okayama is brand new and I got to teach a Mini Kids class full of adorable 2 years olds and their uber proud moms, which was a lot of fun. Okayama is a small town by Japanese standards , which makde me laugh because the population is 600, 000! Sunday morning I got up very early and set out on my adventure to attend an Easter party in Nishiwakishi. Over two hours later I arrived at my destination, a pleasant rural community where ... read more

Hi Everyone, What a week its been! Tuesday was White Day here in Japan. Its an annual celebration that happens exactly one month after Valentine´s Day. Here, its predominantly the women who give men presents on Valentine´s Day in the hopes that their sentiments will be returned one month later on White Day. Sadly, as I was told this week by more than one disgruntled Japanese woman this is seldom the case. Apparently many guys here are all to willing to accept the gifts and then promptly end the relationship before White Day arrives. I did however see several stressed out men buying wilted flowers in 7-11, so I guess not all guys forget White Day! It was only a matter of time before it happened. Yesterday a small child, probably 2 years old cried ... read more

On Sunday I had off to Nara, Japan to take in some of the city that use to be the ancient capital city of Japan. With a population of 363,000 Nara is the second most popular tourist attraction in Kansai area after Kyoto.Several shrines and temples in the area have been named Uneso World Heritage sites and we were fortunate to visit many of them. Among the most interesting was the Todai-ji temple which houses an enormous Budda statue, which is the main tourist attraction in Nara Histories believe that the Emperor ordered the building of the Buddha, known as Daibutsu (The Great Buddha) which stands 3 stories high, to ward of smallpox which was ravaging Japan in 746 when the Budda was built. At th back of the statue is a hole, the same size of one ... read more

Instead of being boring and studious and staying home for the weekend (did I hear someone say something about midterms next week... midterms smidterms...) I ventured when no gaijin has gone before! Almost. There was an aussie girl last year... I visited a lovely family who live out in the countryside, outside Kobe. Kobe is a coastal city famous for Kobe Beef, just by the by. They feed their cows beer and give them massages and stuff. Then they charge a serious amount of money for the meat from these pampered cows. I'll have to get around to trying some, sometime, when I'm feeling rich... On saturday morning I packed my life (roughly, a passport, toothbrush and clean underwear) into a backpack and boarded a train to Sannomiya with Makiko, a local student from my university. ... read more

My stay in Japan was like a concentrated dose of my life there. I met Kazu, Stew and Orie, their babies Aleesha and Joshua, and wandered the streets of Kobe, Osaka, Kyoto feeling as though I'd never left. Real sushi, sake, ocha, donburi, ramen, soba, okonomiyaki, yakiniku... all worth the seven year wait. Kazu and I spent alot of time together, played an impromptu gig (as a trio) at a favourite old bar - Sunflower, and went to a gig at a Kyoto livehouse to see his friend's band 'Frying Dutchman'. Kazu now plans to make his way around Honshuu, just living day to day, busking. Shu-san is still missing after six years. They think he may be working on the run to repay dodgy and very hefty loans. Kazu explained he could only do this ... read more

The last couple of days have been very busy as I´ve begun my teaching schedule. Its only been three days but I´ve already met many wonderful students who are eager to hear about Canada and practice their English. Yesterday I was assigned to Kikagowa school, which is located about 30 minutes from Kobe. The train ride was absolutely beautiful to my left was the sea and to the right was a great view of the mountains. Kikagowa is a small school with only 2 teachers working at it each day. As such I taught my first ever kids lesson, we learned all about sea creatures! The class consisted of 5 boys and one little girl, all were between 6-8years old.All in all it went really well, I taught them vocab words, we played some games and ... read more

I have offically survived my first real day as an English teacher here in Japan!! During the month of March I´ll be doing mostly supply work for teachers who are sick or on vacation then in April when the new school year begins I´ll be assigned more of my own classes. So yesterday morning, with the help of Marissa, I headed off on another train to the school I had been assigned to for that day. Once I got there the Japanese and Native (that´s what us English speaking folks are called here) staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. After helping the staff for a while the School Director assigned me 3 classes to teach that afternoon. All were free time lessons, which means students buy points and simply come to a lesson whenever they want ... read more

I awoke, had a sauna and then Jumped on the train to Kobe. Its occured to me that I am familiar with most Japanese cities for the wrong reasons. Tokyo subway attacks, Osaka - wasnt that the general area of a massive mercury poisoning, and Kobe for the earthquake. Ah well. I arrived at Kobe railway station, which as it turns out isnt really where the action is. Infact the action in Kobe is centred to the north of Kobe Station around the Sannoymiya station area. So no sooner as I arrived was I back on the train (as it turns out an unnecessary step, the two stations are easy walking distance). Having now found my way to the correct station I went in search of accommodation. Kobe is very pretty as a city, and I ... read more
