It's crazy that 13.5 hour plane flights don't scare me these days. I mean, after flying to New Zealand and back (twice), what difference does an extra 2 hours really make? Other than a bit of nasty turbulence, the flight over was fairly uneventful. AA didn't have the best choice of movies though.. I ended up watching Citizen Kane twice. After landing in Osaka, I located my bags and then breezed through customs. I must not look too threatening, as they just glanced at my passport, counted the number of bags I had, bowed, and let me go. First thing I had to do once I got through customs was to buy a phone card and give my housing agent in Kobe a call. He didn't answer unfortunately, so I was left wondering if there would ... read more

It´s the most glorious time of summer in Japan right now...summer vacation! My schools are closed for two whole weeks which meant that I finally have some time to explore Japan for an extended period of time. Last Sunday night I left Kobe on the night bus bound for Tokyo. The bus ride was an experience in itself. Highway buses are outstanding in Japan, seats that recline almost completely, complementary blankets, slippers and coffee and curtains on all the windows to keep out the glare from oncoming traffic so you can get a good nights rest. I imagine I would have slept quite well had I not been sitting next to a man who snored non-stop for the 8 hour ride. Even a few suddle whacks from my water bottle couldn´t stir him! Bright and early ... read more

Well, this morning we slept in for a little, and then we set out to go to Mount Rokko, which is the highest point in Kobe. It took us about a half hour to get there, and then we took a cable car up the mountain. The cable cars are a lot like the inclines in Pittsburgh. This mountain is huge, so the cable car ride seemed like it took awhile. Once we were up there, there really wasn’t a lot to do, but the view was absolutely amazing. It was, like the one thing I had absolutely wanted to do while we were there, and I was so upset when I didn’t think we’d be able to do it, but I’m glad that we were able to even though there wasn’t anything to do ... read more

We arrived in Japan on August 6, the 61st anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Isn’t that ironic? We were on the ship sailing for one day in between our stay in Korea, and our arrival in Japan. That day of sailing might have been the best ever. If you look on a map, you can see all of the tiny islands around Korea and Japan. We had to sail through all of those, and it was so pretty. So we saw land the entire day basically. That day, we also passed under the Kurushima Bridge, which was pretty cool and really pretty to see. The land around it was so pretty. That night, we anchored right in the middle of the ocean, and we could see all the lights and cities of Japan. We ... read more

Hello everyone, The count down continues - 6 days until my 2 week summer vacation begins! Last weekend I head to Awajii island a huge island - I´ve been told its the same physical size as Bali or Singapore but significantly less populated, with a population of 150,000, not far from the main Honshu island where Kobe is located. I travel to Awajii once a month to teach a private lesson and have dinner with some Japanese friends who live there. This past weekend I was invited to a special bbq on the island for some highschool and college students from the area who are headed to the U.S. to do a homestay for the week. We practiced some English conversation - some students seemed pleased to try their English out on me and others looked ... read more

Just a quick entry to say hello, no I haven´t forgot about my blog recently but between the humid weather and working quite abit I´ve scaled my touring back a bit in the last couple of weeks, but fear not I am really just saving my energy and bucks for my upcoming vacation! Summer vacation is almost here, in a few short weeks I have TWO, count´em TWO glorious weeks off of work and I am really excited! I am headed to Tokyo to check out the sights and sounds of Japan´s capital city. I´ve been leafing through my LonelyPlanet for ideas and so far I think I´ll be checking out Harajuku, Shinjuku (where a million + people use a single train station each day) Ginza (which is supposed to be one of the world´s great ... read more
