Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!! Another day working in the freezing cold. No, I'm not a road or construction worker. I teach in a Junior High and as most public schools here in Japan, classrooms dont have heaters, and our superficially heated faculty room offers no relief at all However my day was made special when my school lunch was served. For today we had the usual bread, soup, cheese, yougurt drink and for the very first time in my life............ WHALE, cooked with tomato sauce, soy sauce, ginger, sugar and potatoes. It tasted really good, its like eating beef, only its not very tender nor very firm. It also had a very mild taste that makes it, I guess more palatable to the Japanese taste buds in comparison to the strong taste of beef. Well should I eat WHALE ... read more

So I did master the train/bus system and ended up all the way in Himeji, Japan! The train ride was about 1.5hrs. It was nice cause I liked just realaxing and watching everything outside. I got to see the Ocean side of Osaka on my way out. Very cool. The worst part of the day was waking up to the rain. Yup, its raining and its cold. But thankfully it wasnt too bad in Himeji, looked like a good ady to get away from Kyoto. Cause when I got back it was even colder and wetter then when i left. Himeji was awesome! I got some great pics. And they even let us go up in the castle. I think this castle was for powerful Shoguns back in the day. I think it housed many generations. ... read more

Went to Himeji yesterday, which is home to probably the prettiest castle in Japan - Himeji-jo. Given my penhant for chambara films it was of particular interest to me. Yet another UNESCO world heritage site, it was built during the Edo period, and as such gives insight into the military practices of the time. Its clever design resulted in a castle that was both aesthetically pleasing and defensively sound. As it has never been attacked, it has survived almost intact to this day. Being constructed entirely of wood, you are made to don these useles little slippers with no grip whatsoever and walk up 7 stories worth of tall slippery narrow stairs, and then back down again once you've reached the shrine and are rewarded with the awesome view up top. It's probably equivalent to ... read more

Bonjour!! Now I say this because ever since i've been here, trying to learn how to communicate with the locals, I have been experiencing something strange every so often. Now, my mind must understand that I'm trying to speak a foreign language, thats good, but it doesn't understand that I do not in fact wish to speak French. It's a really strange and annoying thing- to think in french, translate to English and then convert it to a very limited range of Japanese words. I've even almost come out with a 'Danke' or two, and I dont even know german!! So sunday was my last day in Kyoto, and I went for a walk along the Philospher's Path (becoming very enlightened i'm sure.) Then at the end of it I couldn't work out the buses so ... read more

Though living in Japan has been a love-hate experience for me, I’ve always found traveling here a true delight. And with my little teaching stint quickly coming to a close, I felt it was high time to get back out and explore at least a couple more nooks and crannies of the place that’s been my home for the last fifteen months. My first outing was a kind of “girls’ weekend” to the coastal onsen (hot springs) town of Kinosaki. There’s nothing like stripping down naked and jumping into scalding hot pools of mineral water with six of your girlfriends to nurture the bonds of everlasting friendship! To that, add a little bit of sake, a little bit of fresh crab, and a whole lot of silliness, and you’ve got a weekend of great memories. Onsens ... read more

Okay, so I know I’ve been in hiding for a while… I was without the internet for what seems like ages! But now I’m back up and running, so I thought I’d post an update. Here’s what’s new with me: - Finished my math course and will now be teaching accounting My math course ended just before the summer holidays. It was an interesting experience; I was challenged and rewarded equally. My kids are great (I really shouldn’t call them kids as they’re only a couple years younger than me) and worked so hard. The college gave me total freedom with the design and structure of the course. So, having no experience in this sort of thing, I made my own plan… I would throw as much at them as I could and see how they ... read more

Ok, so I think I have a slight addiction to eating and drinking at Izakaya's...each time someone asks me where do you want to eat, of course I'm going to say a japanese Izakaya restaurant...I'm not in Japan that often! Last week I spent a day with Namiko in Kyoto. We visited two of my favourite places so far in Japan. One was this walk through heaps of Torii (see picture) that went on for ages, it was magical although very tiring as it was maybe the hottest day I've experienced so far in Japan! I still keep stopping and thinking, wow, I can't believe I'm actually in Japan, sitting here with a friend I didn't know if I'd ever see again! Ah, such a good feeling... Leaving Namiko, I went back to Gifu. I was ... read more

Sasayama-guchi I spent 10 days with the Nishimura family, Midori, Gen & Ray, helping on their organic farm. They also run an English school so luckily communication wasn't a problem. However Midori did give me a Japanese Verb Conjugation sheet and some exercises to work on. Shame I was too busy digging holes to dedicate more time to it! The farm is in an idyllic rural location, nestled between tree covered mountains. The family were extremely kind and warm so it was easy to feel at home here. We worked for about 3 hours in the morning, then stop for lunch (we all chipped in in the kitchen), then 3 hours in the afternoon followed by dinner. The weather was very changeable; we had sweltery hot and humid days followed by torrential day-long down pours. The ... read more

Long before we came we decided to visit Himeji and Nara as two half day trips from Kyoto, what we didn't decide until today was the sensible thing and do them on the same day! We got the bullet train to Himeji at 8.20, arriving just after 9am. The weather was already hot, clear and sunny, just like we've come to expect from the weather each day - watch that change! We arrived at the grounds of the castle, a very imposing building at the top of the hill over the city and went in. The first part of the tour was through the western bailey building, taking us through the parts of the castle lived in by Princess Sen. The white buildings were blinding in the bright sunlight, but inside the wooden floors and ... read more
