Journey Through Japan
August 15th 2006

It´s the most glorious time of summer in Japan right now...summer vacation! My schools are closed for two whole weeks which meant that I finally have some time to explore Japan for an extended period of time. Last Sunday night I left Kobe on the night bus bound for Tokyo. The bus ride was an experience in itself. Highway buses are outstanding in Japan, seats that recline almost completely, complementary blankets, slippers and coffee and curtains on all the windows to keep out the glare from oncoming traffic so you can get a good nights rest. I imagine I would have slept quite well had I not been sitting next to a man who snored non-stop for the 8 hour ride. Even a few suddle whacks from my water bottle couldn´t stir him! Bright and early ... read more

Journey Through Japan
July 28th 2006

Hello everyone, The count down continues - 6 days until my 2 week summer vacation begins! Last weekend I head to Awajii island a huge island - I´ve been told its the same physical size as Bali or Singapore but significantly less populated, with a population of 150,000, not far from the main Honshu island where Kobe is located. I travel to Awajii once a month to teach a private lesson and have dinner with some Japanese friends who live there. This past weekend I was invited to a special bbq on the island for some highschool and college students from the area who are headed to the U.S. to do a homestay for the week. We practiced some English conversation - some students seemed pleased to try their English out on me and others looked ... read more

Just a quick entry to say hello, no I haven´t forgot about my blog recently but between the humid weather and working quite abit I´ve scaled my touring back a bit in the last couple of weeks, but fear not I am really just saving my energy and bucks for my upcoming vacation! Summer vacation is almost here, in a few short weeks I have TWO, count´em TWO glorious weeks off of work and I am really excited! I am headed to Tokyo to check out the sights and sounds of Japan´s capital city. I´ve been leafing through my LonelyPlanet for ideas and so far I think I´ll be checking out Harajuku, Shinjuku (where a million + people use a single train station each day) Ginza (which is supposed to be one of the world´s great ... read more

Mao to the Rescue!

Published: July 7th 2006Asia » Japan » Hyogo » Kobe

I had such a good day today I wanted to write about it before too many details escape me. I recently read about some rural Japanese towns not far from Kobe which are famous for the pottery that is produced in small studios by local craftspeople. So after consulting 3 different sources and getting 3 different sets of directs I decided to visit one of the commmuities, Aino. To tell you the truth I´m not sure if the towns named Aino or just the local train station that I got off at, but nevertheless they make pottery there so I know I was in the right place. A scenic 1.5 train ride from Kobe, I found myself literally in the middlle of nowhere, with just fice fields as far as the eye could see, but I ... read more

Happy Canada Day in Japan!!!!!

Published: July 5th 2006Asia » Japan » Hyogo » Kobe

Happy belated Canada Day!!!!! On Sunday I invited some of my Japanese friends over to celebrate Canada Day. It´s funny how being in another country for an extended period of time can bring out the patriotic side of someone. When I am in Canada, it feels like any other day except I have the day off from work and there are some fireworks in the sky at night. Not so this year, in the week leading up to Canada Day I found myself gabbing away to myself to my classes about Canada and Canadian culture, thankfully Japanese students are so polite they let me yammer away. I think most they were amazed that a country that has the second largest land mass in the world is only inhabited by 33 million people while their country is ... read more

Journey Through Japan
June 27th 2006

Another week has come and gone here is beautiful Kobe, Japan. Last week was a busy one, outside of working I FINALLY, after much anticipation, got to take in my first professional baseball game in Japan. Anyone who knows me knows that I simply wouldn´t be my father´s daughter if I didn´t get to a game in this baseball loving country! Quite simply, it was outstanding! Hanshin Stadium in a beautiful old stadium, covered in cascading green ivy and always filled to capacity with fiercely loyal fans of the home team, the Hanshin Tigers. It had been 2 months since I first tried to get tickets to a game only to be told, in the nicest possible Japanese way, that there weren´t any tickets available until June. I arrived well before game time because, since I ... read more

June 18th 2006

The past 4 months have been jam packed with new experiences and endless adventures, mixed in with some frustration that comes along with being in a new coountry where I don´t speak the language or understand a lot of the cultural traditions. There are many days that continue to amaze me, some that frustrate me to no end and then there are days that remind me exactly why I decided to to take a vacation from my life and comfort zone in Canada and travel half way around the world to a country I didn´t know a soul in 4 months ago.... Yesterday was one of those days. After work yesterday I was invited to a bbq at the home of one of my students. Little Miyu and Momoko are in my ´Mini Kids´class on Saturday ... read more

The Hozugawa River & Bamboo Groves

After a full week of feeling kinda blah and having a voice that a lot of the mom´s in my baby class referred to as ´husky´I am finally feeling much better and, knock on wood, my voice is returning to normal. A hoarse voice is a hazard of the job I guess when you talk for 6 hours a day! So after returning to the land of the healthy I really wanted to make the most of my time off this week. Friday it was off to Osaka where I visited the Osaka Human Rights Museum, there wasn´t a lot of English here but a friendly little Japanese man followed me around and translated whereever he could, nice and endearing for the first 30 minutes, kinda annoying after an hour or so. So after the museum ... read more

My " Fruitcake " Birthday

Published: May 26th 2006Asia » Japan » Hyogo » Kobe

Last Thursday was my 25 birthday and its kind of ironic that I would celebrate my birthday in Japan, a country that puts alot of importance on the age, especially for women. As someone kindly pointed out to me last Thursday I was celebrating what is considered my 'fruitcake birthday' in Japan. According to Japanese logic nobody wants to have fruitcake after December 25th because its stale and old and following that same reasoning no Japanese man is going to want a woman after she's 25 because, like the fruitcake on Boxing Day she's passed her best before date!!! Despite the saying I had a nice day. I have to admit I wasn´t really looking forward to my birthday. I think most people who have spent extended amounts of time far from home will tell you ... read more

Several Days in May...

Published: May 16th 2006Asia » Japan » Hyogo » Kobe

The first week back after Golden Week has certainly been a busy one. After enjoying an entire week off with the freedom to explore as much as I wanted each day I had to mental psyche myself up to return to work on Saturday. Thankfully, my Saturday 'Mini Kids' class, full of 1.5 year olds and their moms is a really good. I have to admit one of the hardest things for me about teaching in Japan is the fact that you often see your students being hit or slapped by their parents and you are simply expected to ignore because it is an accepeted parenting practice here. Eventhough I included a 'no hitting' rule for all of my classes back in April in the little kids class which the mom's attend students are often given ... read more
