It was time to move on once again. We took the train from Hakodate to Toya. As Toya train station was not near the Lake Toya, we had the option of waiting for a public bus or taking a cab to Lake Toya where our next lodging was situated. In view of the luggage we had and to avoid any hassle, it was decided that cab was a better choice. It was also because the distance was not too far and the fare of about 2000Yen was still affordable. Thus, we reached Hotel Grand Toya almost effortlessly. But didn't know why, we were bushed when we reached and had a siesta before venturing out to the lake area. The weather was fine and a little colder than Hakodate... probably due to the breeze. Generally, the stroll ... read more

We travelled from Tokyo to Hakodate, south of Hokkaido, via train. It required abt 7 hours and 1 train transfer. An unsual thing which happened during the train was that, at one point, we had turn the seats to face another direction coz the train would be travelling in another direction. Train couldn't u-turn so passengers would have to get up move a bit to be more comfortable. Hakodate seemed like a pretty quiet town.. perhaps that's why it had recorded advertisement playing along the streets and music at traffic lights. We didn't see many ppl around town on the first night there. And, the food establishment and touristy areas were pretty empty. Where's everyone? Perhaps it was weekday so lesser crowd. Our lodging here was Fitness 330 Hotel. Weird name for a hotel but it ... read more

September 29 Woke up this morning to find Hakodate, Japan outside our window. So nice to finally get to land! We typically order room service on the days that we are in port so we enjoyed that and then went to Japanese Immigration. That went very smoothly with them looking at our documents and taking a picture and our fingerprints! Hey, I have nothing to hide but I wonder if there were any people that objected to that? Our tour today was "A Day In Hakodate" and began with a visit to the "Morning Market". This part of Japan is where the most squid is caught. ... read more

Well, it happened. Last night I came face to face with the racism that lies underneath the culture here in Japan. It all started when I was stopped for being white in Japan. I left my home at around 8pm. Within one minute I felt myself being tailed by this unmarked car. In New York or in other places in the world this is a sign that you are about to be jumped. But this is Japan people don't just jump out of the car and punk you. This place is safe as all hell. So finally this car rolls by me and drives a little further down the road. I am thinking ok that was weird, but whatever. Then the car stops and two men slowly get out of the car. They start walking toward ... read more

Our caught an early flight from Haneda Airport(Tokyo) to Chitose Airport(Hokkaido). Woke up really early like 4am. Realise the streets of Ikkebukuro can be quite sleazy at this time. the previous night we did some shopping or rather, Xia did some shopping around Sunshine City. Did some people watching at one of the busy junctions before calling it a night. Quite a busy place actually Ikebukuru with all the Pachinko parlours, food places and the working class thronging the streets at night. Quite excited about this leg of the trip at Hokkaido cause it would be my first road trip ! Let our beaten legs get a rest and let our wheels do the walking. We got ourselves a Toyoto Vitz (Think it is a Yaris actually). Fiddled with the GPS for a while and ... read more

Whoops forgot to hit Publish on this yesturday... was pretty outa it when I wrote this due to lack of sleep: ===== So todays my final day on the island of Hokkaido. Yesterday visited the Sapporo Beer museum as well as the city of Otaru. The Sapporo Beer museum was smaller then I pictured it, but not too bad. Most of the signage was in Japanese but I got the gist of it. My favorite bit was these little models they had setup that made it look like beer came from a Santas workshop type atmosphere. Made me chuckle and reminded me of the Simpsons episode where they go to the Duff Brewery theme park. The tastings they had were relatively cheap, and the actual grounds was very nice. Some pretty cool restaurants, went to one ... read more

So yesterday was my first full day here in Sapporo, and I gotta say this is a great city. Sapporo is the 5th largest city in Japan, and one of the newest. Which means one very big thing - streets here actually make SENSE. Instead of wonderful naming like bank street because 50 years ago there may have been a bank, its grid based and divided into N/S/E/W and how many blocks away from city center. Anyways, I arrived here by train and met up with a guy named Neil, from Chicago. Nice chap. Asked him if he was staying at the hostel too and sure enough he was. So we head that way, I find out he:s up here a couple of days while his friend he was visiting is off working. Before this he ... read more

Writing this from the “Super Hakucho Limited Express 9” train. Probably about an hour out from the Seikan Tunnel, a 54km tunnel that goes 240m below sea level. Last time I was in Tokyo I was fortunate enough / smart enough to never have to ride the Tokyo trains during peak times... this time I've been caught twice, and trust me when I say the stories are all true. Once you get on you'll be pushed up against each other, sometimes rather forcefully I might add. It's tight enough that if someone picked my pocket not only would I be unable to act, but unable to turn around and see who was doing it. There's no personal space bubble whatsoever... I don't recommend it. I left Tokyo this morning at 9am, and won't be arriving in ... read more

(Day 160 on the road)I finally had the hiking experience I had been looking for for such a long time - the Daisetsuzan Grand Traverse, from Asahi-dake onsen to Shirogane onsen. Up north in Japan on Hokkaido island, in the remote national park of Daisetsuzan, I spent five full days hiking of and camping in almost complete solitude. The trek is challenging and long, and temperatures dropped to below zero at night. But the biggest problem actually was access to clean water - at this time of the year (early September), water was extremely scarce up there, and it did actually cut my hike short by one day. If you are contemplating doing this hike, read on for some tips or email me for more information. I found the only hiking book there is about Japan ... read more
